The local disposal guide
Mercer Island has one hauler for the whole island: Recology King County has held the city contract since 2019, and every residential address gets curbside service with garbage and food and yard waste collected weekly and recycling every other week. Recycling and compost are included in the garbage rate rather than billed separately, and anything that will not fit beside the cart is either a scheduled bulky item collection or one of the two free hard to recycle events the city runs each spring and fall. The island also has its own answers for the awkward items: a free state electronics site at E-Recycle MI on SE 30th Street, a battery box at the city thrift shop, and a hauler storefront in Issaquah for batteries, light bulbs, styrofoam and small electronics. Household hazardous waste is a short bridge drive to the county site at Factoria, which also takes mattresses, appliances, tires and construction loads from households.

Every residential address on the island gets curbside service from the city's hauler. Garbage and food and yard waste are collected weekly and recycling every other week, with recycling and compost included in the garbage rate rather than billed on their own.
Furniture, mattresses, box springs and appliances that do not fit in a cart are collected from the curb by appointment. The hauler's rate table prices each group per item, and appliances sit outside the free yearly allowance.
Once a year a Mercer Island household can set out extra garbage plus two non-appliance bulky items such as a mattress, a couch or a chair with no collection charge, as long as the pile stays inside the published limit and appliances stay out of it.
A mattress or box spring is named on the island's bulky item list, so it fits the free yearly non-appliance allowance, and beyond that it is a per item curbside charge or a self hauled trip to the county station.
Appliances are collected at the curb by appointment and are always charged, because the free yearly collection covers non-appliance items only. Doors come off before the piece goes out, and the county station recycles the unit rather than burying it.
The island has its own free state electronics site. E-Recycle MI on SE 30th Street takes computers, monitors, laptops, DVD players and televisions at no charge, and the hauler's Issaquah store takes small electronics and appliances.
Remodel and demolition material is a weighed load at the county transfer station, because the island has no debris box programme published with the city or the hauler. The county sets firm limits on the vehicle, the length of the material and the size of the pieces.
Tires never go in a cart. The Factoria transfer station has tire recycling bins for a small number of passenger tires, and the county publishes the limit rather than a tire rate.
Exercise equipment is named on no Mercer Island or hauler list, so the machine is confirmed with the hauler before it goes out, and a heavy machine runs into the county weight threshold if it is self hauled.
Paint, solvents, pesticides, automotive fluids and other hazardous products never go in a cart. King County takes them free of charge at the Factoria site on the mainland, and household batteries also have an on island drop.
The handoff matters
City code bars residential cans from being placed on a public street, a sidewalk or other public property sooner than 24 hours before collection, and requires them to be removed from public areas within 24 hours after collection. Garbage and food and yard waste are collected every week and recycling every other week on the same service day, with the hauler's collection calendar showing which weeks are recycling weeks.

One non-appliance collection a year is free, covering up to one cubic yard of garbage in cans or bags of 32 gallons or less plus two non-appliance bulky items, and appliances plus anything beyond that limit are charged per item.

A mattress or box spring is a non-appliance bulky item, so it fits the one free bulky collection a household gets each year, booked on 206-381-6980. Beyond that allowance it is charged per item at the hauler's published rate. Self hauling to the Factoria transfer station is the other route, where a mattress is recycled per item and more than six in a day needs waste clearance approval first.Official guidance
No. The free yearly bulky collection covers non-appliance items only, so a refrigerator or freezer is charged per item when it is booked for curbside collection, and the door has to come off before it goes out. The hauler confirms the current figure at booking on 206-381-6980. Self hauling is the other route: a county transfer station such as Factoria recycles the unit for a per unit charge.Official guidance
To the free E-Cycle Washington site on the island, E-Recycle MI at 7835 SE 30th Street, which takes computers, monitors, laptops, DVD players and televisions and answers on 206-230-8188. Small electronics and appliances can also go to the hauler's store in Issaquah during its open hours. Televisions and computer equipment are refused in the garbage cart and at the county garbage facilities, so they never go out with the trash.Official guidance
Garbage is billed monthly by cart size, with recycling and compost included, and an extra 32 gallon bag of garbage adds a charge on top. Bulky items are separate: one non-appliance collection a year is free and everything beyond that, plus every appliance, is charged per item at rates the hauler publishes and confirms at booking. Self hauled loads are weighed at the county station, and the on island electronics site and the county hazardous waste site both take their material at no charge. Dropcurb prices a booking separately with the total shown before payment.Official guidance
Recology King County has been the city's solid waste hauler since October 1, 2019 under a ten year contract, and it handles service issues, missed collections and cart sizing on 206-381-6980, by text on 206-369-8604 or by email to mercerisland@recology.com. Every residential address gets curbside recycling, compost and garbage, with garbage and compost weekly and recycling every other week. Apartment, condominium and commercial accounts get garbage only and arrange recycling through the building or business.Official guidance
To the county transfer station in Factoria as a weighed load, in a vehicle or trailer without a mechanised dump bed. Material may not be longer than 8 feet, no piece may be larger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet or heavier than 200 pounds, and clean wood, cardboard, yard waste and scrap metal have to be separated for recycling. The load is charged by weight with a minimum for small loads, and an unsecured load pays an extra charge.Official guidance
