The local disposal guide
Olympia collects its own garbage, recycling and organics through Waste ReSources, which the city describes as the exclusive garbage and refuse hauler inside the city limits, with garbage and recycling every other week and organics every other Monday. The city also runs an on-call bulky item service, so mattresses, box springs, sofas, chairs, washers and dryers, microwaves, non-refrigerated appliances, carpet rolls and tires and rims are picked up for a published per-item charge added to the utility bill, while refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, concrete, dirt, brick, long pipe, paint, solvents, motor oil and asbestos are refused. Household chemicals go free to the county HazoHouse in Lacey, televisions and computers recycle free through E-Cycle Washington, and everything else from a clean out can be driven to the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center for the published garbage, construction or yard waste rate.

The city runs an on-call bulky item service, so a couch, mattress, appliance, carpet roll or set of tires is collected at the address instead of going in the cart.

Washers, dryers, microwaves and other non-refrigerated appliances are on the city bulky list, while a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is refused by the city and goes to the county center.
Televisions, monitors and computers recycle free through E-Cycle Washington, and they are not on the city bulky item list.
Construction material is not on the city collection routes, so debris goes to the county center or into a rented container.
Exercise machines are not on the published city bulky list, so whether the city collects one depends on what Waste ReSources accepts, and the county center takes the load as garbage.
Tires and rims are on the city bulky item list, and the county center takes passenger tires at the garbage rate with a five tire daily limit.
Household chemicals go free to the county HazoHouse in Lacey, with daily limits set per material.
Household garbage goes out in the city cart on the every other week schedule, and anything that does not fit with the lid closed is charged as overflow.
The handoff matters
Carts go out with the handle facing the house, three feet of clearance on each side, and the lid closed, because the truck arm needs an unobstructed reach. Residents are asked to bring carts in after collection and to keep sidewalks, bike lanes and storm drains clear rather than parking a cart in the street.
Carts and containers page with cart placement, overflow tags, cart notices, cart rates and the dumpster and drop box serviceMaterial that does not fit with the lid closed is charged as overflow, with a pre-purchased tag covering one extra bag. Cart tags move through three notices, and after the third the cart may be left unemptied with charges applied, so a repeated tag is a signal to change the cart size or arrangement rather than to add bags.
