The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Tumwater does not run waste collection. The city's own service directory lists recycling centers as a non-city service and points residents to Thurston County Solid Waste, and the county's hauler table names LeMay Pacific Disposal for Tumwater and the rest of north Thurston County. Curbside garbage, recycling, food and yard waste and a bulky item pickup all come from that private hauler, which sets its own rates, so the county publishes no curbside schedule or price. The drop-off side is Thurston County's. The Waste and Recovery Center in Lacey takes household garbage, construction and roofing debris, appliances, food and yard waste and free separated recyclables, charges an extra handling fee per television, monitor and refrigerated appliance, and hosts a HazoHouse that takes household chemicals free from county residents. Tires and scrap metal go in at the regular garbage rate when they are kept separate, and loads have to be covered before they reach the scales.

Curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste

Accepted with preparation

Curbside service in Tumwater comes from a private hauler rather than the city or the county. LeMay Pacific Disposal serves Tumwater and the rest of north Thurston County with garbage pickup, home recycling and food and yard waste, and the county states plainly that it does not provide or oversee curbside collection.

City cost & eligibility
The county does not oversee curbside collection and the hauler sets its own rates, so no price is published on the pages read. Contact LeMay Pacific Disposal on 360-923-0111 to confirm the cart size, the collection day, the monthly charge and any additional charge for an extra pickup, or call Thurston County Solid Waste on 360-867-2491 with a general question.
When & how
Collection runs on the hauler's route day for the address, with recycling and food and yard waste on the same weekly service where the household subscribes to them.
Get it ready
Put the carts out on the collection day, keep glass to the hauler's rule, and call the hauler for anything the cart will not hold because neither the city nor the county runs a curbside bulky program.

Large household items

Special rules apply

There is no city or county bulky pickup program, but the county page states that LeMay Enterprises and the City of Olympia both collect large bulky items for an extra fee and can place bins on site for bigger clean-ups. The alternative is a self hauled load at the county station billed as garbage.

City cost & eligibility
The county says a bulky pickup carries an extra fee but publishes no amount, because the hauler sets it, while a self hauled load at the Waste and Recovery Center is billed as garbage with a minimum charge under 300 pounds or a per ton rate above it, so confirm the pickup price on 360-923-0111 or the load price at the gate.
When & how
Call the hauler to arrange a bulky pickup, or take the load to the Waste and Recovery Center at 2420 Hogum Bay Road NE in Lacey, open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and weekends 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Get it ready
Cover and secure the load, because Washington law requires it and the WARC has an un-tarping area inside the entrance. Keep chemicals and electronics out of the load because they have their own routes, and expect to unload the vehicle yourself.

Thurston County residents and businesses at the county facilities; a pickup arranged through LeMay Pacific Disposal instead carries the extra fee the county describes but does not price.
When & how
Take the piece to the Waste and Recovery Center any day it is open, or call the hauler to arrange a pickup.
Get it ready
Empty the drawers and remove anything you are not sending, cover the load, and keep chemicals, electronics and cooling appliances out because each has its own route and fee.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is not named on the county fee table, so it travels as a household garbage load at the county station or on a bulky pickup through the hauler, and both routes accept it as ordinary household material.

City cost & eligibility
From $21 for the county garbage minimum charge for a load under 300 pounds at the Waste and Recovery Center, with heavier loads billed at $136 per ton prorated. When & how
Take the bedding to the Waste and Recovery Center during its open hours, or call the hauler for a pickup.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the recycling stream, cover the load for the trip, and ask at the gate if the set is being charged separately from the rest of the load.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are named directly on the county's garbage line, so a stove, washer or dryer goes in as a garbage load, and a unit with a refrigeration system carries an extra per item handling fee at the Waste and Recovery Center.

City cost & eligibility
From $21 for the county garbage minimum charge for a load under 300 pounds at the Waste and Recovery Center, with heavier loads billed at $136 per ton prorated. Thurston County residents and businesses; a refrigerated appliance such as a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioning unit, water cooler or dehumidifier adds an $18 per item special handling fee and is accepted at the Waste and Recovery Center only.
When & how
Take the appliance to the Waste and Recovery Center during its open hours, and note that the drop boxes do not take refrigerated appliances.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance, secure or remove the doors so nothing can be trapped inside, keep it upright for the trip, and mention the refrigerant status at the gate so the handling fee is applied correctly.

Refrigerators, freezers and cooling units

Accepted with preparation

Cooling appliances are accepted at the Waste and Recovery Center for a per item handling fee on top of the garbage rate, and they are not accepted at the Rainier or Rochester drop boxes.

City cost & eligibility
From $18 for the $18 per item special handling fee added to the regular garbage fee for a refrigerated appliance at the Waste and Recovery Center. Waste and Recovery Center only, with the regular garbage rate of $21 minimum under 300 pounds or $136 per ton prorated applying on top; the fee covers refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, water coolers and dehumidifiers.
When & how
Take the unit to the Waste and Recovery Center in Lacey during its open hours, and do not take it to a drop box because those sites are not set up for refrigerated appliances.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, remove the doors so it cannot be entered, keep it upright for the trip, and tell the staff it is a refrigerated appliance so the handling fee is recorded.

Televisions, monitors and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are refused at the HazoHouse, and the county charges an extra per item handling fee when a television or monitor is disposed of as garbage at the Waste and Recovery Center. The county points residents to the free E-Cycle Washington network for recycling.

City cost & eligibility
From $18 for the $18 per item special handling fee added to the regular garbage fee for a television or monitor at the Waste and Recovery Center. Waste and Recovery Center only, with the regular garbage rate of $21 minimum under 300 pounds or $136 per ton prorated applying on top; the county directs residents to ecyclewa.org for free electronics recycling instead, and the HazoHouse refuses electronics outright.
When & how
Use the E-Cycle Washington locator at ecyclewa.org for a free recycling drop off, or take the device to the Waste and Recovery Center where it is disposed of as garbage for a fee.
Get it ready
Wipe the personal information off computers, phones and smart televisions before anything leaves the house, keep cables and remotes with the device, and never bring electronics to the HazoHouse, which refuses them along with vapes and cigarettes.

Construction, roofing and remodeling debris

Accepted with preparation

Construction and demolition debris has its own line on the county fee table, covering lumber, building scraps, concrete, bricks, asphalt, sheetrock, wire, pipe, fencing, rocks and soil, insulation and remodeling material such as carpet, flooring, cabinetry and bathroom fixtures, with roofing debris priced separately.

City cost & eligibility
From $21 for the county minimum charge for a construction and demolition load under 300 pounds at the Waste and Recovery Center, with heavier loads billed at $136 per ton prorated and drop boxes charged at $35 per cubic yard for construction debris and $54 per cubic yard for roofing debris. Thurston County residents and businesses at the Waste and Recovery Center, the Rainier drop box and the Rochester drop box; the county notes that its facilities cannot recycle construction and demolition debris, so the load is billed as garbage.
When & how
Take the load to the Waste and Recovery Center or a drop box during its open hours, and keep the load within the eight cubic yard drop box limit or it will be directed to the WARC.
Get it ready
Cover and secure the load, separate material that can be recycled before the trip because the county facilities cannot sort it, keep asbestos loads out because they need their own preparation and carry a different rate, and expect to unload by hand at the drop boxes.
County garbage page with the three drop off locations and hours, the residency, drop box load limit and load securing rules, the fee table for garbage, construction and roofing debris, televisions and monitors with the per item handling fee, asbestos and refrigerated appliances, the food and yard waste rate, free recyclables and donations, the five tire per day limit at the regular garbage rate, the bulky pickup note covering Olympia and LeMay Enterprises and the payment options with the card processing fee

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named by the county or by the hauler's published pages, so a treadmill or a weight machine has to be arranged through the hauler's bulky pickup or taken in as a garbage load at the county station.

City cost & eligibility
No published price names an exercise machine. The hauler's bulky pickup carries an extra fee that the county does not price, and a self hauled load at the Waste and Recovery Center is billed as garbage with a minimum under 300 pounds or a per ton rate, so confirm the route on 360-923-0111 or ask at the gate.
When & how
Call the hauler first, then either arrange the pickup or take the machine to the Waste and Recovery Center during its open hours.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it comes apart so the pieces can be handled, keep the console out of a garbage load if it still works and route electronic parts through E-Cycle instead, and cover the load for the trip.

Tires

Accepted with preparation

Passenger tires are accepted at the county sites at the regular garbage rate, limited to five per day per vehicle, and the Waste and Recovery Center recycles them when they arrive separate from other material.

City cost & eligibility
From $21 for the regular garbage minimum charge for a load under 300 pounds at the Waste and Recovery Center, with heavier loads billed at $136 per ton prorated, applied to passenger tires. Limit five passenger tires per day per vehicle; tires are recycled at the Waste and Recovery Center when kept separate from other material and are handled as garbage at the Rainier and Rochester drop boxes.
When & how
Take the tires to the Waste and Recovery Center or a drop box during its open hours, staying inside the five tire daily limit.
Get it ready
Keep tires separate from the rest of the load at the WARC so they can be recycled rather than landfilled, keep them out of the recycling carts, and ask whether rims stay on before loading.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

Household chemicals go free to the HazoHouse at the Waste and Recovery Center, which takes them from Thurston County residents with strict per day limits and refuses a specific list that includes asbestos, medical waste, extinguishers and fireworks.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. HazoHouse accepts household hazardous waste from Thurston County residents for free, with waste in five gallon containers or smaller and no broken, leaking or empty containers apart from propane, and with per day limits of five gallons of automotive products, chemicals, pesticides or pool chemicals, ten gallons of paint products, ten fluorescent bulbs and three propane tanks per vehicle.
When & how
Take the material to the HazoHouse at the Waste and Recovery Center, and call (360) 867-2912 to confirm the current opening window because it is not published on the readable pages.
Get it ready
Keep products in their original containers and never mix chemicals, bag batteries individually because each must weigh under two pounds, keep alkaline batteries out because they are not accepted, and leave ammunition, fireworks, flares other than road flares, extinguishers, smoke detectors and radioactive material at home because they are refused.

Food and yard waste

Accepted with preparation

Food and yard waste has its own line on the county fee table at the Waste and Recovery Center, with a cheaper minimum than garbage, and a mixed load of garbage and yard waste is charged at the garbage rate instead.

City cost & eligibility
From $16 for the county food and yard waste minimum charge for a load under 420 pounds at the Waste and Recovery Center, with heavier loads billed at $75 per ton prorated. Waste and Recovery Center only; a mixed load of garbage and food or yard waste is charged at the garbage rate instead, and curbside food and yard waste is part of the hauler's service where the household subscribes.
When & how
Take the load to the Waste and Recovery Center, or put the curbside cart out on the hauler's collection day if the household subscribes to food and yard waste service.
Get it ready
Keep food and yard waste separate from garbage so the cheaper rate applies, keep it out of the recycling containers, and remember that used cooking oil is no longer collected at the HazoHouse, so the county asks residents to solidify it before putting it in the household garbage.
