The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

University Place has no city trash department. The city contracts the work to University Place Refuse and Recycling, which runs weekly or every-other-week garbage carts, alternate-week recycling and yard waste, and a free curbside bulky pickup once a year. That annual pickup is the local answer for most large items: five pieces of furniture, appliances, mattresses or exercise equipment come off the curb for no charge, as long as each item is empty, under 300 pounds, no larger than 4 feet by 8 feet by 3 feet, and the appointment is booked by phone. Two limits matter. Electronics are refused in that pickup, so a television, computer or monitor goes instead to the state E-Cycle Washington program, which recycles those items free at registered collection sites and through Best Buy and Staples for the small accessories. And a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner carries a decommissioning fee that the hauler does not publish, so confirm the amount before it is scheduled. Residents also get two do-it-yourself drop-off choices at the hauler's yard, the clean-up loads and the recycling center, and Pierce County runs a transfer station in Puyallup where garbage, yard waste, e-waste and motor oil go.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

A couch, dresser, table, chair or trunk leaves in the hauler's free annual curbside bulky pickup. Furniture is named on the eligible bulky waste list, with beds, mattresses, box springs, dressers, tables, chairs and trunks called out by name.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free of charge for residential customers of University Place Refuse and Recycling whose account is in good standing, up to five items once per calendar year. The program does not apply to multi-family residents who do not pay for their own garbage service, and business or commercial items are not taken.
When & how
Call 253-564-3212 to schedule the pickup. The hauler books only the current and the following month, gives you a pickup date, and the items go out by 7 a.m. and not before 5 p.m. the day before.
Get it ready
State every item on the scheduling call, because items cannot be added or changed afterwards. Empty each piece of its contents, keep it under 300 pounds and inside 4 feet by 8 feet by 3 feet, keep it outdoors and reachable, and do not put one item inside another.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

No charge. Free of charge for residential customers of University Place Refuse and Recycling whose account is in good standing, within the five items allowed once per calendar year. Multi-family residents who do not pay for their own garbage service are outside the program.
When & how
Book the pickup at 253-564-3212 for the current or following month, then set the mattress out by 7 a.m. on the assigned day and not earlier than 5 p.m. the day before.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry, empty and reachable at the curb, inside the 300 pound and 4 feet by 8 feet by 3 feet limits, and name it when you schedule so the crew expects it.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Washers, dryers, stoves, ranges, microwave ovens, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are eligible bulky waste and come off the curb on the free annual pickup. Two extra rules apply: appliances have to be empty, and a unit with a compressor carries a decommissioning fee.

City cost & eligibility
The hauler states that a decommissioning fee applies to appliances with compressors but publishes no amount, and the recycling center notes a possible handling or environmental compliance fee. Pierce County publishes its own per appliance refrigerant charges at the transfer stations and private sites, so confirm the current amount with University Place Refuse at 253-564-3212 before the appliance is scheduled or dropped off.
When & how
Call 253-564-3212 to book the annual bulky pickup, then set the appliance out by 7 a.m. on the pickup day. The recycling center at 2815 Rochester St W takes appliances Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a check-in at the office first.
Get it ready
Leave the doors on. The hauler asks that freezers and refrigerators be securely closed and taped shut rather than stripped, empty the unit first, and keep anything holding oil, fuel or refrigerant out of the yard cart and the garbage cart.

Exercise equipment

Accepted with preparation

Exercise equipment is named eligible bulky waste, with stationary bikes, treadmills and weight benches called out by example, so a machine leaves in the same free annual curbside pickup as furniture and appliances.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free of charge for residential customers of University Place Refuse and Recycling whose account is in good standing, within the five items allowed once per calendar year. The item still has to be empty, under 300 pounds and inside the 4 feet by 8 feet by 3 feet limits.
When & how
Book the pickup at 253-564-3212 for the current or following month, then put the machine out by 7 a.m. on the assigned day.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it comes apart so the pieces are manageable, keep the frame and the loose weights together, and empty anything the machine holds before it goes out.

Large household items

Accepted with preparation

The hauler runs a free curbside bulky waste pickup once a calendar year for up to five large items. Furniture, appliances, mattresses, exercise equipment, carpet and empty power yard equipment are eligible, while glass items, home improvement material and electronics are not.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free of charge for residential customers of University Place Refuse and Recycling with an account in good standing, five items once per calendar year, personal residence items only. Multi-family residents who do not pay for their own garbage service are outside the program, and a compressor appliance carries a decommissioning fee.
When & how
Call 253-564-3212 to schedule. Only the current and following month are booked, the pickup date is assigned, items go out by 7 a.m., and nothing may be placed out before 5 p.m. the day before.
Get it ready
Name every item on the call, because nothing can be added later, and keep each item empty, outside, reachable and inside the 300 pound and 4 feet by 8 feet by 3 feet limits. Carpet has to be kept dry, rolled no longer than 6 feet and no wider than 1 foot in diameter, with padding rolled separately and tied or taped at each end.

Televisions

Special rules apply

A television is refused in the hauler's curbside bulky pickup, because electronics are not eligible. Washington's E-Cycle program is the local route and recycles televisions free at registered collection sites, and the Pierce County transfer station also takes e-waste.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. E-Cycle Washington is a free state program for Washington residents at registered collection sites, and the Pierce County transfer station lists e-waste among its accepted streams. A badly damaged set, such as an old television with a broken cathode ray tube, may be refused at a collection site, so call ahead.
When & how
Use the E-Cycle location finder or the 1-800-RECYCLE hotline to find the nearest registered site, or bring the set to the Hidden Valley Transfer Station at 17925 Meridian Ave E in Puyallup, open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Get it ready
Do not put a television in the curbside bulky pile, the garbage cart or the recycling cart. Call the collection site first for a set with a cracked or broken screen, and keep the unit dry on the way in.

Computers, monitors and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers and portable DVD players recycle free through E-Cycle Washington at registered collection sites, and the Pierce County transfer station takes e-waste as well. The hauler's curbside bulky pickup does not take electronics.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free through E-Cycle Washington for Washington residents at registered collection sites, and free for keyboards, printers, toner cartridges and cell phones at participating Best Buy and Staples stores. The county transfer station charges its normal disposal rates for anything it takes as garbage rather than as e-waste.
When & how
Find a registered E-Cycle site through the state location finder or the 1-800-RECYCLE hotline, or use the Hidden Valley Transfer Station at 17925 Meridian Ave E, open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Get it ready
Back up and clear your files before the device leaves the house, keep electronics out of the curbside carts, and note that keyboards, printers, toner cartridges and cell phones are not part of the state program and instead go to a participating Best Buy or Staples store.

Construction and renovation debris

Special rules apply

Renovation material is not eligible in the free curbside bulky pickup, because home improvement items are refused. The local routes are the hauler's construction drop boxes, the scrap wood pile at its recycling center and the Pierce County transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
No single published rate covers renovation debris. The hauler quotes its own drop box price, the recycling center takes scrap wood with no treated wood and charges separately quoted fees for other material, and Pierce County charges its transfer station rates by weight. Confirm the price for the exact load before it leaves the property.
When & how
The recycling center takes scrap wood Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a check-in at the office first, and the Hidden Valley Transfer Station is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep renovation material out of the garbage cart and the bulky pile, sort wood, metal and concrete so the load can be handled, and keep treated wood out of the recycling center's wood pile. Cover and secure any load you haul yourself.

Household trash in the cart

Accepted with preparation

Day to day trash goes in the hauler's cart, weekly with a gray cart or every other week with a brown cart. Carts come in four sizes with weight limits, and large items, tires, liquids, hazardous material and anything over 4 inches around and 3 feet long do not belong in them.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included with the residential garbage service the account already pays for, sized by the cart the household rents. The hauler publishes no separate per bag charge, and the clean-up drop-off is limited to two declared loads a year for current residential customers.
When & how
Carts go to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and the hauler recommends putting them out the night before. Keep three feet of clearance around each cart, five feet from vehicles and 18 feet of overhead clearance.
Get it ready
Match the load to the cart: 50 pounds in a 24 gallon cart, 100 in a 48, 130 in a 64 and 200 in a 96. Bag loose material so it does not spill, and keep furniture, appliances, tires, liquids, asbestos and hazardous material out of the cart.

The free bulky pickup starts with a phone call

Large items do not go out on their own. Call University Place Refuse and Recycling at 253-564-3212, name every item you want collected, and take the date the office gives you. The hauler books only the current and following month, the account has to be in good standing, and nothing can be added once the pickup is scheduled. Carts go out early with room around them

Garbage, recycling and yard waste carts go to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and the hauler suggests putting them out the night before. Leave three feet of clearance around every cart, at least five feet from parked vehicles and 18 feet of overhead clearance, and keep the load inside the cart's weight limit, which runs from 50 pounds in the smallest cart to 200 pounds in the 96 gallon cart.

Prepare a load before the drop-off

The hauler's clean-up drop-off takes two declared loads a year, one of garbage and one of yard waste on the same day, at 2815 Rochester St W on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bring photo identification, check in at the office, secure and cover the load, use a pickup size vehicle, and keep out liquids, paint, hazardous waste and regular household garbage. Wood, metal, yard waste, tires, concrete, brick, stone and car batteries are separated for recycling.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

University Place households have two drop-off addresses and a state program. The hauler's own yard at 2815 Rochester St W is the closest: the recycling center there takes scrap metal, appliances, glass, scrap wood such as old fences, decks and construction debris, and yard waste, with a check-in at the office first and a yard waste fee, and it is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The clean-up drop-off at the same address takes two declared loads a year, one of garbage and one of yard waste, on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with photo identification and a load that is covered, sorted and kept to pickup size. For anything else, Pierce County runs the Hidden Valley Transfer Station at 17925 Meridian Ave E in Puyallup, open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., where garbage, yard waste, recycling, e-waste and motor oil go and larger loads are weighed, with a minimum charge for the first 400 pounds and a per ton rate above that. Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

Will University Place Refuse take a couch from the curb?

Yes, once a year and at no charge. Furniture is on the eligible bulky waste list, so a couch goes out on a scheduled pickup day for up to five large items per household per calendar year. How do I get rid of a mattress in University Place?

Does the bulky pickup take appliances?

Yes. Appliances are on the eligible bulky waste list: clothing washers and dryers, cooking stoves and ranges, microwave ovens, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. Every appliance has to be empty, the doors stay on with freezers and refrigerators taped shut, and the appliance counts as one of the five items in the once a year free pickup. A unit with a compressor carries a decommissioning fee that the hauler does not publish, so ask for the amount at 253-564-3212 when you book.Official guidance

Up to five large items once a calendar year: furniture such as beds, mattresses, box springs, dressers, tables, chairs and trunks, appliances such as washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, exercise equipment, carpet and padding, and empty power yard equipment.
