Washers, dryers, stoves, ranges, microwave ovens, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are eligible bulky waste and come off the curb on the free annual pickup. Two extra rules apply: appliances have to be empty, and a unit with a compressor carries a decommissioning fee.
City cost & eligibility
The hauler states that a decommissioning fee applies to appliances with compressors but publishes no amount, and the recycling center notes a possible handling or environmental compliance fee. Pierce County publishes its own per appliance refrigerant charges at the transfer stations and private sites, so confirm the current amount with University Place Refuse at 253-564-3212 before the appliance is scheduled or dropped off.
When & how
Call 253-564-3212 to book the annual bulky pickup, then set the appliance out by 7 a.m. on the pickup day. The recycling center at 2815 Rochester St W takes appliances Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a check-in at the office first.
Get it ready
Leave the doors on. The hauler asks that freezers and refrigerators be securely closed and taped shut rather than stripped, empty the unit first, and keep anything holding oil, fuel or refrigerant out of the yard cart and the garbage cart.
Large items do not go out on their own. Call University Place Refuse and Recycling at 253-564-3212, name every item you want collected, and take the date the office gives you. The hauler books only the current and following month, the account has to be in good standing, and nothing can be added once the pickup is scheduled. Items go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the assigned day and not before 5 p.m. the day before.
The hauler's clean-up drop-off takes two declared loads a year, one of garbage and one of yard waste on the same day, at 2815 Rochester St W on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bring photo identification, check in at the office, secure and cover the load, use a pickup size vehicle, and keep out liquids, paint, hazardous waste and regular household garbage. No charge. Free of charge for residential customers of University Place Refuse and Recycling with an account in good standing, up to five items once per calendar year. Multi-family residents who do not pay for their own garbage service are outside the program, and an appliance with a compressor carries a decommissioning fee.

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.
Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
Does the bulky pickup take appliances?+
