City cost & eligibility
A non-refrigerated appliance is charged as a bulky item at 37 dollars for the first item and 15 dollars for each additional item on the utility bill, while a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioning unit is not picked up at all and is charged the county garbage rate at the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center plus an 18 dollar per item special handling fee. When & how
Arrange a bulky pickup for a non-refrigerated unit, or haul a refrigerant unit to the county center at 2420 Hogum Bay Road NE in Lacey, which is the only site that takes it.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and keep it out of the cart, the dumpster and the waste enclosure. A refrigerant unit needs its own trip because the county adds a special handling fee for it, and the city refuses to collect it.
Carts go out with the handle facing the house, three feet of clearance on each side, and the lid closed, because the truck arm needs an unobstructed reach. Residents are asked to bring carts in after collection and to keep sidewalks, bike lanes and storm drains clear rather than parking a cart in the street.
