Refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, dishwashers, microwaves and home air conditioners are collected as bulky items and are free at the two county facilities for the first two appliances each day.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Large appliances are free at Kiefer Landfill and the North Area Recovery Station for one or two per day. Beyond that, Kiefer Landfill charges $35 each and the North Area Recovery Station charges $40 each, and appliances also ride in the annual bulky appointment at no separate charge.
When & how
Schedule a bulky appointment for curbside collection, or deliver the appliance to Kiefer Landfill or the North Area Recovery Station during open hours. Say that an appliance is in the pile when you schedule, because it may be collected by a different truck on the same appointment day.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance of trash and debris, tape or tie large appliance doors closed for child safety, remove fluids and removable batteries and route those to a household hazardous waste facility, and set the appliance to one side of the bulky pile so it can be handled separately.
Nothing bulky is collected on the ordinary cart schedule. Call 916-875-5555 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on a weekday, use the online request form or the SacGreenTeam app, wait for the appointment, and set the pile out by 6 a.m. no more than 24 hours before that day.
Six feet from objects and 14.5 feet of overhead clearance
Keep the pile in front of the property line on the same side of the street, one foot from the curb or pavement edge on a flat hard surface, six feet from cars, mailboxes, fences, poles and basketball hoops, and out from under tree limbs, wires and low awnings. Never block a sidewalk, traffic lane or gutter.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Use the included county bulky appointment
An Arden-Arcade address on county curbside service with furniture, a mattress, an appliance, electronics or a mixed bulky pile that fits the size limits.
Cost & conditions
No charge. One appointment for up to five cubic yards is included every 12 months with residential cart service, measured from the day the service is used; extra appointments and material above five cubic yards are charged at current rates up to a 15 cubic yard maximum.
Arrange it
Call 916-875-5555 on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., submit the online appointment request or use the SacGreenTeam app, then set the material out by 6 a.m. no more than 24 hours before the appointment day.
Business waste, renovation rubble, dirt, rocks, bricks, tree stumps, glass panes, mirrors, hot ashes, liquids and hazardous waste are refused, and special set-out items need a phone call at least a day ahead.

A household that can transport its own load and wants to skip the appointment wait, including appliances, electronics, mattresses, tires and separated green waste.
Cost & conditions
From $10 for a car, station wagon or small SUV load. Kiefer Landfill charges $10 for a car, station wagon or small SUV, $20 for a small van or large SUV, $35 for a pickup truck and $45 for a large van, and the North Area Recovery Station charges $10, $20, $40 and $50 respectively, with $25 added for an uncovered or unsecured load. Weighed loads start at a $45 minimum at Kiefer Landfill and $50 at the North Area Recovery Station, and loads made up only of no-fee items are free.
Arrange it
Cover or secure the load, stop at the scale house, follow staff direction to the tipping or recycling area, and separate household disposal material from green waste, clean wood and recyclables.
Customers must unload as directed, and the sites can close early when the daily vehicle limit is reached, so arrive at least 15 minutes before closing.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?+
Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.
Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
Do refrigerator and freezer doors need to come off?+
The county asks that large appliance doors be removed or securely taped or tied shut for child safety, and the appliance must be empty of trash and debris before collection or drop-off.Official guidance
Is a window or central air conditioner treated as an appliance?+
Home air conditioners appear on the free appliance list alongside refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, dishwashers and microwaves for the first two units a day.
