A few pieces, one pickup

Your room has changed. The old furniture can go.

The desk you no longer use. The dresser that doesn’t fit the new layout. The chairs left over after a move. Choose the pieces you’re done with and give them a pickup day, without arranging a quote visit.

Different pieces. One clear total.

Add each furniture item and its quantity. See the combined price before you pay, with loading, transportation and disposal included.

Choose each piece

A table and four chairs are five items.

You don’t need to guess how much space your furniture fills in a truck. Match each piece to the catalog, then add its quantity. Your total updates as you go.

Tables and chairs

Choose the table, then add each chair separately. Coffee tables, side tables and dining tables have their own options. A large or substantially heavy table has a different choice.

Dressers and mirrors

Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.

Desks and bookshelves

Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

  1. Choose what leaves and what stays.

Count the furniture you want removed and empty drawers, shelves and cabinets. Add any other items to the booking instead of leaving an unlisted pile beside the furniture.

  2. Arrange the move outside.

You handle indoor carrying and any disassembly needed to get the furniture through your home. Plan for doorways, interior stairs and building access before pickup day.

  3. Show exactly what goes.

Use a permitted outdoor spot with a clear route to the furniture. Add a location photo and access notes. Keep the pickup items separate from furniture and belongings that are staying.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Household furniture is named first on the acceptable list for the annual Bulky and Reuse Pick-Up, so a couch is collected at the curb on a scheduled day rather than left out with the carts.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One Bulky and Reuse Pick-Up a year at no charge for a single-family address of four units or less and for multi-family complexes of five units or more. Additional pickups can be arranged for a fee.
When & how
Call Alameda County Industries on (510) 483-1400 to book the pickup. Appointments are not available during the first two full weeks in January or the first full week of June and October, so schedule in advance.
Get it ready
Put the furniture within three feet of the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours early, and keep it clear of the street and sidewalk. Furniture is exempt from the item weight limit, but it still has to be handled safely by two people, and the whole single-family load is capped at seven cubic yards.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Set the bulky load out the way the district asks

Place items within three feet of the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day and never more than 24 hours in advance. Do not block the street or sidewalk. A single-family collection is limited to seven cubic yards and anything beyond that is charged, so keep the pile inside the limit and stack it so that removing one item cannot topple the rest.

Watch the weight limit on everything except furniture and appliances

Items must weigh less than 75 pounds and be manageable by two people, with furniture and appliances exempt. Loose material should be bagged, boxed or bundled, yard trimmings and unpainted wood go in bundles no longer than four feet with pieces under six inches across, and tires must have the rims separated. Canyonlands residents coordinate a collection location with Alameda County Industries instead of the standard curb.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Castro Valley keeps bulky items on the curb and sends the material that must not go in a cart to a gate. The annual Bulky and Reuse Pick-Up takes furniture, mattresses, televisions, electronics, appliances, scrap metal, textiles, bundled wood and up to four rimless tires, and the hauler sorts it for reuse and recycling before landfill. Everything else needs a trip. Household hazardous waste and electronics go free to the Alameda County facilities, with Hayward at 2091 West Winton Ave. open Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Oakland at 2100 East 7th Street open Wednesday through Saturday, using Alameda County identification and staying within 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. Mattresses can also be dropped free at the Davis Street facility in San Leandro, up to five a day. Renovation material moves in an Alameda County Industries debris box or to a district-approved permitted facility, because the curbside route refuses it. Yes. Add each piece and its quantity to one booking. A dining table and four chairs are five items; a separate mirror is not included with a dresser. You can mix eligible items from different rooms and review their combined total before paying.
