The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Chino contracts all refuse and recycling service to Waste Management, and a single-family address gets three 96-gallon carts emptied on one weekly collection day. The City and the hauler run bulky item pickup on top of that: a residence with curbside cart service can request three free pickups a calendar year with up to six items in each one, collected on the regular collection day. The accepted list covers household furniture, housing fixtures, appliances and white goods, carpet, electronic waste and wrapped mattresses. Loose trash, tires, large pieces of metal, propane tanks, lithium batteries, hazardous chemicals, dirt and rock and construction material are all refused, and electronics are capped at three items a year. Anything that will not fit those rules moves through the household hazardous waste event on Schaefer Avenue or a San Bernardino County disposal site.

Weekly trash, recycling and organics carts

Accepted with preparation

A single-family address has three 96-gallon wheeled carts on one weekly collection, one each for trash, recyclables and organic waste, and material left outside a cart is not collected.

City cost & eligibility
$41.15 per month for the single-family three-cart residential service. Per the City of Chino fiscal year 2026-27 integrated waste rate schedule effective July 1, 2026, which sets the senior citizen and low volume generator three-cart rates lower. Trash service is billed on the City utility bill, and the Utilities Division at 909-334-3264 confirms the rate on the account.
When & how
Carts go to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day and come back in after they are emptied. Waste Management asks for carts at least three feet apart and three feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other obstacles, with the wheels toward the house. When a holiday falls on the collection day or earlier in that week, pickup shifts one day.
Get it ready
Keep food scraps and yard waste out of the black cart, keep plastic and food waste out of the recycling cart, and close the lid on each cart. Hazardous waste, batteries, tires, paint, electronics, medical waste, auto parts and construction material do not belong in any of the three carts.

Bulky item pickup

Accepted with preparation

A Chino residence with curbside cart service can request three free bulky item pickups a calendar year with up to six items in each pickup, collected on the regular collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Three bulky item pickups a calendar year, with up to six items in each pickup, are included for a Chino residence with curbside cart service. The pickups are arranged with Waste Management, and a request beyond that allowance is billed separately.
When & how
Schedule at least 48 hours before the collection day, online at cityofchino.org/wmbulkyitempickup or by calling Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986, then put the items next to the carts before 6:00 a.m. on the regular collection day. A different truck may collect the bulky items.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to items on the accepted list, keep it clear of the carts and the sidewalk, and wrap a mattress before it goes out.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress goes out as a bulky item on one of the free pickups, and the flyer lists it as accepted only when it is wrapped.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A wrapped mattress uses one of the three free bulky item pickups included each calendar year for a Chino residence with curbside cart service.
When & how
Schedule the pickup at least 48 hours ahead at cityofchino.org/wmbulkyitempickup or by calling Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986, then set the wrapped mattress out before 6:00 a.m. on the regular collection day.
Get it ready

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances and white goods are on the accepted bulky list, so a refrigerator, washer, dryer or water heater goes out on one of the free pickups rather than into a cart.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. An appliance uses one of the three free bulky item pickups included each calendar year for a Chino residence with curbside cart service.
When & how
Schedule the pickup at least 48 hours ahead at cityofchino.org/wmbulkyitempickup or by calling Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986, then set the appliance out before 6:00 a.m. on the regular collection day.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and keep it out of the carts. Do not take a refrigerator or air conditioning unit to the City household hazardous waste event, because that facility refuses them, and a county landfill takes a refrigerator only with no Freon left in it.

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions and other electronic devices are accepted as bulky items, and the flyer caps a household at three electronic items a calendar year.

City cost & eligibility
Electronic waste is accepted on the bulky program, limited to three electronic items a calendar year, and the adopted fiscal year 2026-27 rate schedule also carries a separate e-waste pickup line at $35.67. Confirm with Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986 whether a request is covered by the free allowance or billed at that rate.
When & how
Schedule the pickup at least 48 hours ahead at cityofchino.org/wmbulkyitempickup or by calling Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986, or take the device to the City household hazardous waste event on the second or fourth Saturday of the month.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of all three carts, because Waste Management lists electronic waste as non-acceptable container material. Wipe personal data from a computer, phone or drive before it leaves the property. The City event takes televisions, printers, laptops and personal computers.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition debris is refused in the carts and on a bulky pickup, so a project load moves through a rented bin or a county disposal site.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the weekly carts nor the bulky item program takes construction and demolition debris, and Waste Management lists construction waste as non-acceptable container material. The project arranges a temporary bin or a roll-off, or hauls the load to a San Bernardino County disposal site, where ordinary residential waste is charged by weight.
When & how
Line up the bin or the hauling before the project generates the debris, because nothing from a project goes into a weekly cart or a bulky pile.
Get it ready
Separate the material the project can recycle or reuse, keep treated wood, liquid waste, asbestos and other restricted material out of a self-haul load, and keep the weight tickets and diversion records that a permitted project has to file.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the published bulky list, and a machine contains the kind of metal the flyer refuses, so Waste Management has to confirm the machine before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
Waste Management confirms whether a treadmill, elliptical or weight machine is accepted as a bulky item, because the flyer refuses large pieces of metal. Ask on the scheduling call at 1-800-423-9986 before the machine goes to the curb.
When & how
Call Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986 with the type of machine before scheduling, and if it is accepted, put it out before 6:00 a.m. on the regular collection day.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart, keep the loose weights and parts with it, and keep the pile within the six item limit for the pickup.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Carts out by 6 a.m., and only carts

Trash, recycling and organic waste all go out in the three carts by 6 a.m. on the collection day, at least three feet apart and three feet from obstacles, with the wheels toward the house. Material that is not inside a cart is not collected, so a pile beside the carts waits for a scheduled bulky pickup instead.

A bulky pickup starts with a scheduling call

Nothing goes to the curb just because it is large. The pickup is scheduled with Waste Management at least 48 hours ahead, the items join the carts before 6:00 a.m. on the regular collection day, and a different truck may come for them.

Bulky pickup beyond the free allowance

A household that has used the three free pickups for the year and still has large items to clear.

Cost & conditions
From $44.59 for the first item in a paid bulky item pickup. The City's adopted fiscal year 2026-27 integrated waste rate schedule, effective July 1, 2026, prices a paid bulky pickup by the item, with each additional item at its own scheduled amount. Temporary bin or roll-off for a project

A household or contractor with remodel, roofing, landscaping or demolition debris.

Cost & conditions
The bin is quoted when it is ordered, and a county site charges self-hauled residential waste by weight with added handling fees on some loads, so the project confirms the container size, the delivery terms and the disposal cost before the work starts.
Arrange it
Order a temporary bin or roll-off, or haul the material to a San Bernardino County disposal site with the load covered.

An uncovered or unsecured load doubles the disposal fee, and a county landfill does not accept an item more than ten feet long, so break down or re-size the material first.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Chino has no city-owned landfill or transfer station, so a resident who hauls material drives to a San Bernardino County site. The closest is Mid-Valley Landfill at 2390 Alder Avenue in Rialto, open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with San Timoteo Landfill at 31 Refuse Road in Redlands as another option open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. County loads are charged by weight, a load has to be covered or the fee doubles, and items over ten feet long, liquids, sealed containers, mercury and lead items, medical waste and waste from outside the county are refused. Paint, oil, batteries, bulbs, chemicals, medications and electronic waste go instead to the City household hazardous waste event at 5050 Schaefer Avenue on the second or fourth Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., free to Chino and county residents, with televisions, printers, laptops and computers on the accepted list. Tires are not part of the bulky program, so they go to a retailer or to a county site, which takes up to nine rollable tires per load off the rim for a fee. How many free bulky item pickups can I get?

A Chino residence with curbside cart service can request three free bulky item pickups each calendar year with up to six items in each pickup, collected on the regular collection day. Schedule at least 48 hours ahead at cityofchino.org/wmbulkyitempickup or by calling Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986.Official guidance

Which items count as bulky?

Household furniture, housing fixtures, appliances and white goods, miscellaneous household items, carpet, electronic waste and wrapped mattresses are on the published accepted list. Loose trash, tires, dirt, sand, rock, large pieces of metal, propane tanks, lithium batteries, hazardous chemicals and construction material are not.Official guidance

What do I do on the pickup day?

Nothing goes out until the pickup is scheduled. On the collection day, place the items curbside next to the trash, recycling and green waste carts before 6:00 a.m. Waste Management may send a different truck for them, so the carts and the pile can be emptied at different times.Official guidance

Does this work for an apartment or a shared building?

The flyer covers Chino residents with curbside cart service, and the City sends multi-family organics questions to the property manager. A renter in a shared building should ask the manager or Waste Management who holds the account before scheduling a pickup.Official guidance

Does a mattress need to be wrapped before pickup?

Yes. The City and Waste Management flyer lists mattresses as accepted only when wrapped, so cover the mattress before it goes to the curb. A wrapped mattress counts as one of the six items allowed in a pickup.Official guidance

What if I have more mattresses than the free pickups cover?

Additional bulky pickups beyond the three free ones each calendar year are available at a scheduled cost, and the adopted fiscal year 2026-27 rate schedule prices a paid pickup by the item. Confirm the current amount with Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986 before scheduling.Official guidance

Which appliances will be collected?

Household appliances and white goods are on the published bulky list, so a refrigerator, washer, dryer, oven or water heater goes out on one of the free bulky pickups. Schedule it with Waste Management and keep it out of the three carts.Official guidance

Can an old refrigerator go to the household hazardous waste event?

No. The City facility lists refrigerators, air conditioning units and large appliances as not accepted. An appliance belongs on a bulky pickup instead, and a San Bernardino County landfill takes a refrigerator only when no Freon is left in it.Official guidance

Can a television go into the trash cart?

No. Waste Management lists electronic waste as non-acceptable container material in Chino, and the bulky flyer accepts electronic waste as a bulky item with a limit of three electronic items a calendar year. A television can also go to the City household hazardous waste event.Official guidance

Why are televisions treated as hazardous in California?

California law treats nonfunctioning cathode ray tubes and the mercury bulbs in televisions, laptops, tablets and monitors as hazardous waste, so they are not trash. The state Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program funds household collection through approved collectors.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Chino?

The City contracts all refuse and recycling service to Waste Management, including collection, disposal and customer service, while the City bills residential accounts on the utility bill. The hauler's customer service line is 1-800-423-9986 and the City Utilities Division is 909-334-3264.Official guidance

How is the residential trash rate set?

The City Council adopts the rate each year. Resolution 2026-037 confirms a five percent adjustment to the service components effective July 1, 2026, and the resolution states that the disposal components are passed through, with the landfill tipping fee set by Riverside County and the organics processing rate set by the franchisee's processor.Official guidance

Who handles service for apartments and shared buildings?

Waste Management handles collection for multi-family and commercial accounts, and the City directs organics questions from apartment residents to the property manager. A renter should ask the manager who holds the account before scheduling anything with the hauler.Official guidance

What do I do with paint, chemicals, batteries and medicines?

Chino and San Bernardino County residents can take household hazardous waste to the Public Works Services Yard at 5050 Schaefer Avenue on the second or fourth Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., free of charge, with a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit in containers no larger than 5 gallons. Sharps and business waste are not accepted, and the City runs a sharps mail-back kit through Waste Management instead.Official guidance

Where do tires and scrap metal go?

Tires are refused in the carts and on a bulky pickup, so they go to a tire retailer or to a San Bernardino County site, which takes up to nine rollable tires per load off the rim for an added fee. Large pieces of metal are also left off the bulky program.Official guidance
