The local disposal guide
Chino Hills residents get three free bulky item pickups each calendar year from Waste Management, the city's franchise hauler, and the published accepted list covers couches, tables, mattresses and box springs, appliances, air conditioners, patio furniture, electronic waste and bundled branches. Extra pickups are available at a nominal cost, and a pickup has to be booked by phone at least 24 hours before the regular collection day or online at least 48 hours before it. Twice a year the city and WM also run a Community Cleanup drop-off where residents bring bulky items in a car, pickup, van or SUV, proof of residency in hand. Items the bulky route refuses have their own answers: household chemicals, batteries, paint, fluorescent bulbs and tires go to the City of Chino household hazardous waste site at 5050 Schaefer Avenue on the second and fourth Saturday, where electronic waste is also accepted, and building materials are a project question instead, with WM Builder's Direct roll-offs and the city's 65 percent diversion requirement for permitted work.

The accepted list names air conditioners, appliances, barbecues and patio furniture, box springs and mattresses, bundled branches, chairs, couches and tables, electronic waste and bagged green waste.

Coolant appliances have a different answer at the hazardous waste site, which refuses refrigerators and air conditioning units.
Electronic waste is on the accepted bulky item list, so a television, computer or small device can ride one of the three free pickups each year. Chino Hills residents can also drop electronic waste at the Public Works Service Center in Chino on the second and fourth Saturday of the month.
Building materials are refused at the city's bulky item drop-off events, so a project load has its own rules. Ordinance No. 395 puts at least 65 percent of project waste back into reuse or recycling, qualifying projects file a Waste and Recycling Reduction Plan at submittal, and WM Builder's Direct supplies roll-off containers for residential and commercial work.
The city publishes an accepted bulky item list and exercise equipment is not named on it, so a treadmill, weight machine or bench is a confirm-first item rather than an automatic pickup. WM has to confirm the piece before it is set out.
Household chemicals leave Chino Hills on a separate route. The nearest site is the City of Chino Public Works Service Center at 5050 Schaefer Avenue, open the second and fourth Saturday, and its published accepted list runs from motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and automotive or household batteries through paints, pesticides, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, thermostats and aerosol cans to tires with no rim preferred.
The handoff matters
A Chino Hills bulky pickup has to be scheduled ahead of the regular collection day: at least 24 hours ahead when it is booked by phone with WM at 800-423-9986, and at least 48 hours ahead when it is submitted through the online request form. The item also has to be too large for the regular trash cart, since the three free pickups a calendar year are for household items the cart cannot take.

Those materials have separate routes: the chemicals and batteries go to the household hazardous waste site at 5050 Schaefer Avenue, and building material belongs to a project plan rather than a residential drop-off.
