The local disposal guide
Folsom collects its own waste and recycling rather than franchising the work out, and a single-family address gets a gray garbage can, a blue recycling can and a green organics can. The green can and the garbage can are emptied every week and the recycling can every other week. Clearing something large runs through the Bulky Waste program: a single-family household can book up to three appointments a calendar year with up to five cubic yards of material in each one, and furniture, mattresses, appliances, metals, toilets, glass, a spa cut into quarters and up to five tires all belong on that pile. The program is narrower than it first looks. Cardboard is no longer taken, construction and demolition material is refused, and electronic waste including televisions is expressly excluded, so a television goes through the household hazardous waste pickup instead. Anything the city will not take can be hauled to a Sacramento County site, where mattresses, large appliances, electronic waste and passenger tires are free for residents.

A single-family household can book up to three Bulky Waste Pickup appointments a calendar year, with up to five cubic yards of material in each appointment, collected from the edge of the street.

Metals and appliances including microwaves are on the acceptable bulky waste list, a lawnmower is accepted with the gas and oil removed, and a county site takes up to two large appliances a day from residents at no charge.
Electronic waste is expressly refused in the bulky waste program, so a television, monitor, computer or printer goes through the city household hazardous waste route or to a county free drop off instead.
Exercise equipment is not named on the acceptable bulky waste list, and heavy metal items are refused, so the machine has to be confirmed with the division before it goes out.
Concrete, bricks, rocks, tile, dirt, sand, sod and composite roofing are refused in the bulky waste program, so a project load moves through a rented city dumpster or a county site.
The handoff matters
A bulky waste pile only goes out for a booked appointment, and it goes on the edge of the street rather than on the property. It has to be out by 6 a.m. on the appointment day and not before the 24 hour mark, because an earlier pile is subject to a code violation. No alley pickups are made.
Bulky item pickup page with the three appointment allowance, the five cubic yard limit, both material lists and the full terms of serviceFood scraps and food-soiled paper go into the green organics can inside a clear plastic or compostable bag, and recyclables go loose in the blue can. On a bulky pile, yard waste and wood stay separate from metals and appliances because different vehicles collect each group, so one visit may not clear the whole pile.

A single-family residence can book up to three bulky waste appointments each calendar year, with up to five cubic yards of material per appointment. Book online or call 916-461-6730, and remember the household account has to be current for the collection to run.Official guidance
Yard waste and wood, furniture and mattresses, metals and appliances including microwaves, metal pipe in six foot lengths or shorter, lawnmowers with the gas and oil removed, barbecues without a propane tank, tires up to 40 inches in diameter and up to five of them, toilets, glass windows and doors, a spa cut into quarters, and styrofoam.Official guidance
Cardboard is no longer taken. The program also refuses auto parts and fluids, liquids, concrete, bricks, rocks and tile, dirt, sand and sod, woodchips and bark, tree stumps, cement-filled tires, combustibles and flammables, commercial or household garbage, composite roofing, heavy metal items such as an engine block, anything longer than six feet, household hazardous waste and electronic waste.Official guidance
The pile goes on the edge of the street, not on the property, and it has to be out by 6 a.m. on the appointment day. Nothing goes out earlier than 24 hours before the appointment, the material has to stay out of the regular cans and cardboard boxes, and glass should be positioned where the driver can see it from the street.Official guidance
Call the division and cancel by 1 p.m. the business day before the appointment, or the missed appointment counts as one of the three for the year. The city also notes the program is popular, so a requested pickup date may be later than the day the appointment is booked.Official guidance
Yes, on a booked bulky waste appointment. Furniture is named in the acceptable list, so a couch or sofa is collected from the edge of the street as long as the appointment has been scheduled and the piece fits inside the five cubic yard allowance for that appointment.Official guidance
Keep them apart. The city asks residents to separate yard waste and wood from metals, appliances and miscellaneous materials because different vehicles collect each group, so the pile may not be cleared in a single visit.Official guidance
A mattress is named in the acceptable bulky waste list, so it goes out on a booked appointment and counts toward the five cubic yards allowed for that appointment. Three appointments a calendar year are included for a single-family residence.Official guidance
Yes. Sacramento County lists mattresses and box springs among the free residential drop off items at Kiefer Landfill and the North Area Recovery Station. The whole load has to contain only free items for the drop off to be free, and the load has to be covered or secured on the road.Official guidance
Yes. Metals and appliances including microwaves are named in the acceptable bulky waste list, so a refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher goes out on a booked appointment inside the five cubic yard allowance. A county site also takes up to two large appliances a day from residents at no charge.Official guidance
Both are on the accepted list with conditions. A lawnmower has to have its gas and oil drained before it goes out, and a barbecue has to be set out without a propane tank. Neither belongs in a regular can.Official guidance
No. Electronic waste including televisions, computers, monitors, printers and solar panels is on the refused list for the bulky waste program. A television goes through the household hazardous waste pickup, a drop off appointment, or a county free drop off instead.Official guidance
Book a Door 2 Door household hazardous waste pickup, which runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and accepts electronics, or call 916-461-6730 for one of the limited drop off appointments. Sacramento County also takes electronics from residents at no charge at Kiefer Landfill and the North Area Recovery Station.Official guidance
The City of Folsom runs its own Waste and Recycling Division rather than franchising to a private hauler. Customer service is at 50 Natoma Street, 916-461-6730, solidwaste@folsom.ca.us, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and billing and start or stop service is 916-461-6101.Official guidance
The city's rate table states that the residential collection rates include the garbage, recycling and organics cans along with household hazardous waste collection and bulky waste service, and it lists a separate SB 1383 charge for all residential accounts. The rate depends on the garbage can size, with low-income and mobile home community rates set lower, and billing at 916-461-6101 confirms the total on the account.Official guidance
The bulky waste appointment allowance is written for single-family residential customers, and the city tells apartment residents and business locations to call the office at 916-461-6730 for their options. Household hazardous waste pickups are open to multi-family residential customers as well as single-family, and apartment communities have green organics bins near the garbage dumpsters.Official guidance
Book a Door 2 Door pickup online or at 916-461-6730 for a Monday, Wednesday or Friday, and leave the material at the bottom of the driveway rather than next to the house, on the sidewalk, in the parkway or in the street. Per pickup limits are five gallons of antifreeze, five gallons of used motor oil, ten one-gallon cans and two five-gallon pails of paint, with other household hazardous waste not over five gallons or 50 pounds plus 125 pounds of universal waste.Official guidance
Cardboard is no longer accepted in the bulky waste program. Flatten clean cardboard and take it to one of the community recycling bins, which the city lists at the Andy Morin Sports Complex with 24 hour access and at Folsom City Hall, Folsom Middle School and the Folsom Historic District. Only recyclable material goes in those bins and everything else is prohibited.Official guidance
Yes, up to five tires per bulky waste appointment, as long as each one is 40 inches in diameter or smaller. A cement-filled tire is refused, and Sacramento County also takes up to four passenger vehicle or light truck tires with rims per day from residents at no charge.Official guidance
