The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Union City runs curbside refuse, recycling and compost with Republic Services and Tri-CED Community Recycling, and large household items come off the curb on a scheduled bulky item collection. A single-family household gets two collections a year at no additional charge, each limited to four cubic yards, and the acceptable list covers furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpeting, one major appliance per collection, up to four passenger car tires, small appliances and electronic waste, tied branches and clean unfinished wood. Anything hazardous, along with construction debris, rocks, bricks, dirt and concrete, is refused and takes another route. Electronic waste also drops free at the Tri-CED centre on Western Avenue six days a week, and batteries and cell phones ride beside the recycling cart in a Tri-CED bag. Renovation projects face a 65 percent diversion rule, with 100 percent of concrete, asphalt, clean soil and plant debris recycled.

Bulky items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

Union City single-family households with individual cart service get two bulky item collections a year at no additional cost, each limited to four cubic yards and scheduled with Republic Services.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Two annual bulky item collections at no additional cost for single-family residential households with individual cart service. Apartment and multi-family residents arrange a collection through the property manager for an additional fee.
When & how
Call Republic Services on 510.657.3500 to schedule. The collection is set no more than 21 days after the call and a postcard confirming the date is mailed out.
Get it ready
Set items at the curb the night before or by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day, because putting them out early can attract extra or prohibited material and the pile may then not be collected. Loose items must be bagged or boxed or they will not be picked up, branches and prunings must be tied in bundles no more than five feet long or six inches across, and the whole collection may not exceed four cubic yards, described as six feet wide by six feet long by three feet high.

Get it ready
Keep the piece out of the carts and inside the four cubic yard pile. Furniture may exceed 150 pounds because it is exempt from the single item weight cap, but it still counts toward the volume limit, and nothing painted or made of construction material belongs in the pile.

Schedule with Republic Services on 510.657.3500, then set the mattress out the night before or by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the carts, set it in the four cubic yard pile, and keep it clear of the street. Loose material that is not boxed, bagged or tied may not be collected.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One major household appliance per scheduled collection, included in the two annual bulky collections at no additional cost for single-family households.
When & how
Book the collection with Republic Services on 510.657.3500 and name the appliance when scheduling, since only one major appliance goes out per collection.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and tightly secure or remove doors and lids for safety, which the city asks for explicitly. Keep appliances out of the carts, and note that refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and dishwashers are not treated as electronic waste, so they belong on the bulky collection rather than at the electronics drop-off.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste is accepted in the bulky item collection, and Tri-CED Community Recycling also takes it free year-round at its Western Avenue centre with no appointment.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the two annual bulky collections at no additional cost for single-family households, and free with no appointment at the Tri-CED drop-off, which is open to the public.
When & how
Book a bulky collection with Republic Services on 510.657.3500, or drive to Tri-CED at 33377 Western Avenue from Tuesday to Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before handover, keep electronics out of the carts, and remember that a refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher, fan or hair dryer is not electronic waste and belongs on a bulky collection instead. Loose items in a bulky pile must be bagged or boxed.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition debris is refused in the bulky programme, rejected alongside rocks, bricks, dirt and concrete, and covered projects have to meet a 65 percent diversion rule with all concrete, asphalt, clean soil and plant debris recycled.

City cost & eligibility
No construction container or gate rate is published on the pages read here, and a covered project also posts a performance security deposit calculated as the lesser of three percent of project cost or 10,000 dollars. Confirm the container and the tipping charge with Republic Services on 510.657.3500 or with the receiving facility.
When & how
Order a roll-off box from Republic Services on 510.657.3500, use a C&D recycling contractor permitted by the city, separate material on site for self-haul, or take mixed loads to one of the mixed C&D facilities the city lists. Covered projects also submit a Green Halo waste management plan and upload receipts at least every 30 days.
Get it ready
Keep construction material, painted wood, rocks, bricks, dirt and concrete out of the bulky pile, because the city refuses all of them there. Recycling loads containing more than ten percent landfill material by weight or volume must be hauled by Republic Services, and debris contaminated with asbestos, lead or other hazardous material needs a waste management plan naming the disposal site and a letter from that site confirming the material cannot be recycled.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the bulky acceptable list or the prohibited list, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed against the four cubic yard limit.

City cost & eligibility
No published list or rate names an exercise machine, and a bulky collection is free to single-family households only twice a year, so confirm the item with Republic Services on 510.657.3500 when the collection is scheduled.
When & how
Call Republic Services before the collection day and confirm the machine, then set it out on the scheduled bulky item day if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Describe the machine when you call. Anything other than furniture and appliances must weigh less than 150 pounds, so a heavy frame may not qualify, and the whole pile still has to fit four cubic yards with loose parts bagged or boxed.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Schedule first, then set out on the confirmed day

A single-family household books one of its two free bulky item collections with Republic Services on 510.657.3500, and the collection is set within 21 days with a confirmation postcard mailed out. Items go to the curb the night before or by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day, because a pile set out early can collect extra or prohibited material and may then be refused. If the truck passes without collecting it, the household calls again to reschedule and moves the material out of public view in the meantime.

City bulky item collection page with the two annual free collections, the scheduling window and postcard, the set-out timing, the four cubic yard limit, the acceptable and prohibited item lists and the multi-family route

Four cubic yards, one major appliance, and the refused list

Each collection is capped at four cubic yards, described as six feet wide by six feet long by three feet high, and one major household appliance goes out per collection with doors or lids secured or removed. Loose items must be bagged or boxed, branches and prunings must be tied in bundles no longer than five feet or six inches across, and up to four passenger car tires are allowed. Items over 150 pounds are refused except furniture and appliances, and paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, car batteries, medical waste, painted wood, construction and demolition debris, rocks, bricks, dirt and concrete are all prohibited.

Batteries ride beside the cart, chemicals go to the county

Single-family and parcelised multi-family residents can put common household batteries and cell phones out for curbside collection in a clear zip-lock bag from Tri-CED, placed on the ground next to the recycling cart rather than inside it on the regular collection day, with lithium battery ends taped to prevent combustion. Car batteries are excluded from that programme and go to an Alameda County household hazardous waste facility or an auto parts store. Paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil are refused in the bulky pile and go to the Alameda County program on 800.606.6606 or the facility on West Winton Avenue in Hayward.

Furniture, mattresses, carpeting, one major appliance, tires, tied branches and electronic waste go out on one of the two free bulky item collections a single-family household can book with Republic Services on 510.657.3500, within 21 days and no more than four cubic yards at a time. Electronics also drop free at Tri-CED Community Recycling at 33377 Western Avenue, open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with no appointment, and Tri-CED supplies the zip-lock bag used to put batteries and cell phones beside the recycling cart on collection day, with lithium ends taped.
