San Leandro's bulk pickup has limits — we don't
The City of San Leandro contracts residential collection to Alameda County Industries (ACI) at 610 Aladdin Avenue, San Leandro, under an exclusive franchise; ACI's scheduling line is. A portion of the city inside the Oro Loma Sanitary District is served separately by Waste Management of Alameda County online. Both haulers run the SB 1383 three-cart system California mandated effective January 1, 2022 — a single green compost cart that co-collects yard trim, food scraps, and soiled paper, plus weekly garbage and recycling. ACI's published guidance is that the green cart takes grass clippings, leaves, and small branches less than six inches in diameter; pieces must fit inside the cart. Banned from the green cart: palm fronds, treated wood, painted/composite/engineered wood, dirt, rock, brick, concrete, pet waste, and plastic bags including BPI-certified compostable film. The overflow channel is the On-Call Bulky Clean-Up Program, which replaced the temporary bin system in February 2025. Single-family households and 2-4 unit multi-plexes get two free appointments per year (one for multi-family tenants), each allowing up to three cubic yards (a 3' x 3' x 9' pile) and three bulky items at 150 lbs each. Beyond that triggers an overage fee, new appointments are blacked out the first two weeks of January, set-out has to happen by 6 AM on pickup day, and items can't be staged more than 24 hours in advance. Self-haul is the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex at 2615 Davis Street — inside city limits, one mile off the I-880 Davis Street exit — with combined transfer station, mixed-waste MRF, organics receiving, C&D recycling, and the Alameda County HHW drop-off (appointment-only at 1-) for treated wood, pesticides, propane, and fluorescent bulbs ACI won't take at the curb; per-ton gate fees apply with a source-separated green-waste discount. Regional backstop is the Altamont Landfill in Livermore, about 28 miles east on I-580. For private haulers, 1-800-GOT-JUNK's Bay Area network runs a $150+ minimum with required on-site estimate; Junk King Alameda explicitly markets San Leandro service from its East Bay franchise page with a $389+ floor; College Hunks runs $150-$800+ volume-based; Junkluggers runs $200-$600+. This was absolutely the easiest experience I've ever had with a business. They have amazing communication including text. Pricing was extremely reasonable and service was quick. Their site is so easy to use. I was concerned this wasn't a legit company, but they absolutely are and I'm so glad I found them as I was quoted $1500 by another company in the St. Louis area. I was provided with photos from the pickup to validate that the items had been removed. Even tho I had to change the pickup date several times, I was able to easily text them to let them know I needed to change dates. Highly recommend!!!
