Get it ready
Empty the unit and tightly secure or remove doors and lids for safety, which the city asks for explicitly. Keep appliances out of the carts, and note that refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and dishwashers are not treated as electronic waste, so they belong on the bulky collection rather than at the electronics drop-off.
A single-family household books one of its two free bulky item collections with Republic Services on 510.657.3500, and the collection is set within 21 days with a confirmation postcard mailed out. Items go to the curb the night before or by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day, because a pile set out early can collect extra or prohibited material and may then be refused. If the truck passes without collecting it, the household calls again to reschedule and moves the material out of public view in the meantime.
Four cubic yards, one major appliance, and the refused list
Each collection is capped at four cubic yards, described as six feet wide by six feet long by three feet high, and one major household appliance goes out per collection with doors or lids secured or removed. Loose items must be bagged or boxed, branches and prunings must be tied in bundles no longer than five feet or six inches across, and up to four passenger car tires are allowed. Items over 150 pounds are refused except furniture and appliances, and paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, car batteries, medical waste, painted wood, construction and demolition debris, rocks, bricks, dirt and concrete are all prohibited.
Batteries ride beside the cart, chemicals go to the county
Single-family and parcelised multi-family residents can put common household batteries and cell phones out for curbside collection in a clear zip-lock bag from Tri-CED, placed on the ground next to the recycling cart rather than inside it on the regular collection day, with lithium battery ends taped to prevent combustion. Car batteries are excluded from that programme and go to an Alameda County household hazardous waste facility or an auto parts store. Paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil are refused in the bulky pile and go to the Alameda County program on 800.606.6606 or the facility on West Winton Avenue in Hayward.

Drive to the Hayward facility at 2091 West Winton Ave. on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, stay in the vehicle with the material in an unlocked trunk, and let staff unload it.
Each visit is limited to 125 pounds or 15 gallons in containers no larger than five gallons or 50 pounds, the facility is closed Sunday through Wednesday and on the listed holidays, and the waste must be carried by the household resident rather than a hauler.
