West Haven collects rubbish and recycling weekly by district and runs bulk trash as two designated weeks a year rather than an on-call pickup, so the calendar matters more than the phone call. During the April and September bulk weeks the city's contractor takes couches, chairs, tables, carpeting, padding and fencing, up to six cubic yards, and refuses building material, tires, mattresses, propane tanks and hazardous waste outright. Mattresses move through a paid bag bought from Public Works and set out on the day it is purchased for, and electronics have their own free quarterly drop-off at the city garage, which takes computers, monitors, televisions, microwaves and small appliances while refusing batteries and anything with refrigerant.
