The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Delray Beach runs its own residential collection, and the curb is the first answer for a couch, a refrigerator or a mattress. The city's bulk list takes large items on the scheduled collection day and names refrigerators, wash machines, lawn mowers, couches, bedding and wood fences up to six feet, while construction materials, boats, junk cars, boulders and tree trunks are not collected. Everything hazardous goes to the Solid Waste Authority instead, and Palm Beach County residents drop off batteries, oil-based paint, light bulbs, electronics and chemicals free at a Home Chemical and Recycling Center. Delray Beach has two of them, one on SW 4th Avenue in the eastern part of the city and one on South State Road 7 in the west, and self-haul garbage and bulky loads are weighed at the transfer stations for a published fee.

Household garbage and recycling

Accepted with preparation

Delray Beach collects residential garbage and recycling Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., with no collection on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

City cost & eligibility
Garbage and recycling are part of the residential service the city bills on the monthly utility statement, which is why no per pickup price is published. The ordinance quoted on the city page is the $11.50 per cubic yard charge, with an $11.50 minimum, that applies when garbage, recycling or bulk trash is placed out outside the allowed window.
When & how
Use the neighborhood's scheduled collection day. Containers go out no earlier than 5:00 p.m. the day before and come back in by 7:00 p.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Everything belongs inside the container so the lid closes, and trash must be drained of liquid. Keep hazardous waste, electronics, tires and construction material out of the cart, because those streams are not collected at the curb and go to the county programs instead.

Bulky items and large loads

Accepted with preparation

Delray Beach collects large items that cannot be containerized or bagged at the curb on the scheduled collection day, and its list names refrigerators, wash machines, lawn mowers, couches, bedding and wood fences up to six feet.

City cost & eligibility
Bulk trash rides the residential collection service the city bills on the monthly utility statement rather than a separately priced pickup. The published charge in the city code is the $11.50 per cubic yard penalty, with an $11.50 minimum, for placing bulk trash out outside the allowed window, billed to the water account.
When & how
Put the items at the curb no earlier than 5:00 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection day, and have everything out by 6:00 a.m. on the collection day because a truck that has already passed may not return.
Get it ready
Cover or secure oversized items so nothing scatters, keep them clear of the travel way, and keep construction materials, boats, junk cars, boulders and tree trunks out of the pile because the city does not collect them at the curb.

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators and washing machines are on the city's curbside bulk list, and an appliance taken to a Solid Waste Authority facility is billed as white goods on the published tipping fee schedule.

Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure or remove the door so nothing can be trapped inside, keep it out of the garbage container, and remember that a cooling appliance belongs with the appliances rather than with the hazardous waste or electronics drop-off.

Televisions, computers and electronic waste

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are not collected at the curb. The city routes them to the Solid Waste Authority, which takes them free from Palm Beach County residents at the Home Chemical and Recycling Centers.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronics, batteries, paints, chemicals and light bulbs are accepted free from Palm Beach County residents at any Home Chemical and Recycling Center, with no appointment needed, and there is no curbside collection for them.
When & how
Drop the devices at the Home Chemical and Recycling Center at 1901 SW 4th Ave in eastern Delray Beach or at 13400 South State Road 7 in western Delray Beach, open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Saturday.
Get it ready
Bring the material upright and in its original labeled container where possible, never mix chemicals, and keep electronics out of the garbage and recycling carts because they are handled with the hazardous waste stream.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

The city does not collect construction material at the curb, and the Delray transfer stations refuse the heavy categories of construction and demolition debris, so those loads go to the North County Landfill in West Palm Beach.

City cost & eligibility
From $80 per ton for construction and demolition debris and large vegetation on the Solid Waste Authority tipping fee schedule, with a $10.00 minimum charge for any load and a $10.00 charge for a load that is not secured. A self-haul construction load is weighed and paid at a Solid Waste Authority facility by cash or credit card. The Delray transfer stations refuse concrete, block, brick, tile, steel, rebar, roofing material, construction lumber, trusses, pallets, dirt, fill, sod and stumps, so a load containing those materials has to go to the landfill instead.
When & how
Haul the load to the North County Landfill at 6330 N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach, open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday, or arrange a permitted container hauler for a larger project.
Get it ready
Keep construction debris out of the carts, out of a bulky request and out of the hazardous waste drop-off. Cover the load, because an unsecured load is charged more, and separate clean material where the receiving facility recovers it.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment appears on no Delray Beach or Solid Waste Authority material list, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No published city or county entry covers an exercise machine, and a self-haul load to a Solid Waste Authority facility is charged by the load on the tipping fee schedule, so confirm the item with the sanitation division at 561-243-7530 first.
When & how
Call the sanitation division before the scheduled collection day, or take the machine to a Solid Waste Authority facility if the load is accepted there.
Get it ready
Keep the machine out of the garbage container and out of the hazardous waste drop-off, and describe its size and materials when you call so the collector knows what is coming.

For a hazardous waste or electronics drop-off

Bring the material to a Home Chemical and Recycling Center, keep products in their original labeled containers, make sure lids are tight, do not mix chemicals, and transport items upright. There is no curbside collection for any of it, no appointment is needed at the two Delray centers, and gasoline is limited to 10 gallons at the eastern Delray center and 30 gallons at the western one, with oil limited to 25 gallons and fluorescent bulbs to 10.

For a self-haul load

Every load is weighed at the scale, so arrive with the material sorted and know which stream it belongs to. Taking it somewhere yourself?

Delray Beach is a municipal collection city, so the curb handles the everyday and the bulky load while the county handles anything hazardous or heavy. The city collects garbage Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and takes large items on the scheduled collection day, naming refrigerators, wash machines, lawn mowers, couches, bedding and wood fences up to six feet while refusing construction materials, boats, junk cars, boulders and tree trunks. Hazardous waste and electronics never go in a cart: they are dropped free at a Solid Waste Authority Home Chemical and Recycling Center, and Delray Beach has two, on SW 4th Avenue and on South State Road 7. Self-haul disposal is weighed at the same sites, with white goods billed as white goods and construction and demolition debris billed at its own rate, and the heavy construction categories that the transfer stations refuse have to go to the North County Landfill in West Palm Beach. The city also adds an Amnesty Day to the normal vegetation pickup day by zone each hurricane season, with vegetation and bulk trash in separate piles and no hazardous items or construction material. A self-haul load to a Solid Waste Authority facility pays the tipping fee, while household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off is free to Palm Beach County residents. Dropcurb prices its own pickup separately and shows the total at checkout.Official guidance
