The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Port Orange collects its own garbage through an exclusive franchise with Waste Pro of Florida, with two pickups a week and a curbside route for bulky household items. A couch or an appliance goes out on the normal garbage collection day, while a large or multiple item load waits for the neighborhood Claw Zone day, and the household calls Waste Pro to make sure the crew knows it is there. Residential remodeling debris is allowed on that route as long as the resident did the work, because licensed contractors have to remove their own debris at their own expense. Nothing hazardous rides the garbage: paint, batteries, medications, sharp needles, pressurized containers and garden or pool chemicals go to the Volusia County household hazardous waste facility at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange or the West Volusia Transfer Station in DeLand, and those same two facilities take obsolete electronics, televisions included. A mattress has no published route in the city or county material, so the household confirms it with the hauler before it goes to the curb.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is a bulk household item in Port Orange, so it goes curbside on the normal garbage collection day, and a large piece or a whole load waits for the neighborhood Claw Zone day. The household calls Waste Pro to make sure the collection is on the schedule.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulk household items are collected curbside as part of the residential service on the household garbage collection day, with large or multiple items handled on the Claw Zone day; excess garbage may result in an additional charge.
When & how
Garbage is collected twice a week, curbside by 7:00 a.m., and pick up runs between 7 am and 7 pm. Collection happens on all holidays except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
Get it ready
Have the piece at the curb before 7:00 a.m., keeping containers and items out no earlier than 7 pm the day before, and call Waste Pro so the crew knows a bulk item is waiting. Keep contractor debris off the curb unless the resident did the work.
City garbage collection page with the twice weekly schedule, the curbside by 7 a.m. rule, the can size and weight limits, the glass taping requirement, the hazardous waste refusal and the two county drop-off sites, the holiday exceptions and the bulk item and Claw Zone rules with the hauler phone numberCity solid waste page naming the exclusive Waste Pro franchise for garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk material, the excess garbage charge, the yard waste and branch rules, the collection window and container placement rules, and the contractor debris rule

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

No city or county page names a mattress, so bedding has no published route in Port Orange and cannot be promised at the curb. The household confirms the item with Waste Pro before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the city nor the county publishes a mattress entry or a mattress rate, and the bulk list names furniture and appliances without mentioning bedding, so confirm with Waste Pro at 386-492-8855 before setting a mattress or box spring out.
When & how
Ask when the bulk collection is scheduled, and keep the unit out of the garbage cart in the meantime because bedding is not garbage and hazardous material is refused on that route.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and whole so it can be handled, and ask whether the box spring counts as a separate item when the collection is arranged.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are named as bulk household items alongside furniture, so they go curbside with the normal collection, and the county landfill also accepts clean white goods at its published per ton rate for household appliances.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances are collected curbside as bulk household items under the residential franchise, with the county landfill accepting clean white goods at the published clean debris rate when a household self hauls instead.
When & how
Put the appliance out by 7:00 a.m. on a collection day and call Waste Pro at 386-492-8855 to confirm the pickup, or self haul to the Tomoka Landfill, open 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, secure the doors, and keep it out of the garbage cart. A self hauled load is weighed and charged by material type at the landfill scale.
City garbage collection page with the twice weekly schedule, the curbside by 7 a.m. rule, the can size and weight limits, the glass taping requirement, the hazardous waste refusal and the two county drop-off sites, the holiday exceptions and the bulk item and Claw Zone rules with the hauler phone numberVolusia County facility locations, hours and fees page with the Tomoka Landfill and West Volusia Transfer Station addresses, phones and hours, the holiday openings and closures, and the Resolution 2025-40 dumping fees by material

Televisions, computers and electronic waste

Accepted with preparation

Volusia County takes obsolete electronics from residents at either of its household hazardous waste facilities, and the list names computers, monitors, printers, stereo equipment and televisions. That gives a television a documented local drop off even though the city garbage page does not mention electronics.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residents may drop obsolete electronics at either Volusia County household hazardous waste facility, at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange or the West Volusia Transfer Station in DeLand, as published by the county.
When & how
The Tomoka Landfill is open 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and closed Sunday, and the West Volusia Transfer Station is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Both close on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before handover, and check whether the device is still working first, because the county encourages donating working equipment for reuse before recycling it.

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

Residential remodeling debris is accepted on the city bulk route provided the resident did the work, while licensed contractors have to remove their own debris at their own expense. A self hauled demolition load is charged at the county landfill's construction rate.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residential remodeling debris is included in the curbside collection when the resident performs the work, and contractor debris is excluded by the franchise; a self hauled load pays the county landfill rate instead.
When & how
Put the material out by 7:00 a.m. on a collection day and call Waste Pro at 386-492-8855 to confirm, or self haul during the Tomoka Landfill's Monday to Saturday hours.
Get it ready
Keep the material to a residential job the household did itself, because any contractor of any type must remove carpet, cabinet, tree and lawn debris at their own expense. A self hauled load is weighed at the scale and charged by material class.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named nowhere in the city bulk list or the county material, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed before it is set out. The bulk route is the closest fit if the hauler accepts the item.

City cost & eligibility
No published entry or rate covers an exercise machine, so call Waste Pro at 386-492-8855 and confirm whether the machine is collected as a bulk household item before it goes to the curb.
When & how
Ask before a collection day, and if the machine is accepted it goes out by 7:00 a.m. on the day the hauler confirms.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it will go so two people can handle it, and remove any console or battery pack so the electronic part can go to the county facility instead.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulk household items, yard waste and household garbage are collected under the residential franchise at no separate charge, with the caveat that excess garbage may result in an additional charge.

Get it ready

Where do paint, batteries and electronics go in Port Orange?

Not in the garbage. Hazardous wastes such as paint, batteries, medical sharps and medications, pressurized containers, garden and pest control products and cooking oil are refused, and residents take them to the Volusia County household hazardous waste facility at the Tomoka Landfill at 1990 Tomoka Farms Road in Port Orange or the West Volusia Transfer Station in DeLand. The same two facilities take obsolete electronics including computers, monitors, printers and televisions.Official guidance

Can a contractor put debris out in Port Orange?

No. Contractors of any type, including carpet, cabinet, tree services and lawn maintenance, must remove all debris, yard waste and tree debris at their own expense. Residential remodeling debris is accepted on the curbside bulk route only when the resident does the work, and a self hauled demolition load pays the county landfill's construction and demolition rate instead.Official guidance
