Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Residential electronics are collected by request every Thursday rather than with the bulky pile, and the City publishes no charge for the request.

Construction and demolition debris

Construction debris is collected by request rather than in the regular round, with published per ton disposal fees added to a timed pickup rate.

From $106.94 for the published special residential pickup rate, charged per quarter hour with a minimum of the same amount and with disposal costs added on top. Garbage and recycling containers go to the curb no earlier than the day before the scheduled pickup and are returned to the storage area near the home no later than the day following service. Bulky items and yard waste use a longer window, and they go out no sooner than the weekend before the pickup date. A pickup day that falls on or after a City holiday may move one day later.

Find the Red or Blue week for the address

Bulky items and yard waste are collected every other week, and each address sits on either a Red week or a Blue week with its own pickup day inside that week, such as a Red Monday. The City publishes the red and blue week calendar online, prints a customer service guide that arrives by the start of each year, and offers an address lookup for the specific day.

Stay inside six feet by four feet by four feet

A bulky item can be no larger than six feet long by four feet wide by four feet high and has to be something that will not fit in the garbage barrel. The City names appliances, small furniture, mattresses, lamps, bikes, chairs, tables, disassembled swing sets, plastic pools and barbecue grills. Anything bigger, or a pile that cannot sit at the curb, goes to a Cash for Trash event or to a special pickup billed by the quarter hour with disposal costs added.

Hazardous waste and project debris have their own routes

Hazardous waste is not picked up by the City at the curb and goes to a Cash for Trash event on the third Saturday of April or October, where a residential solid waste customer presents a City utility bill before unloading. Construction and demolition debris is collected by request rather than on the regular round, and electronics have their own by request Thursday route, so none of that material belongs in the garbage barrel or on the bulky pile.

Cash for Trash event

A city household with hazardous waste, or with a bulky item that cannot be left at the curb.

Cost & conditions
No charge. City of Tallahassee residential solid waste customers, who present a City utility bill before unloading material and receive a $5 credit, limited to one credit per utility bill. Household garbage, yard waste and construction or demolition debris are not accepted at the events.
Arrange it
Drive to the City Community Beautification and Waste Management facility at 2727 Major James Morgan Jr. Way on the third Saturday of April or October between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., bring a City utility bill, and unload the material.

Only hazardous waste and bulky items belong at the event, and the City refuses household garbage, yard waste and construction or demolition debris there. A customer with those materials requests a special residential pickup instead.

Special residential pickup by request

A city household with an item larger than the bulky limit, a tree that will not fit the yard waste guidelines, or construction and demolition debris.

Cost & conditions
From $106.94 for the published special residential pickup rate, charged per quarter hour with a minimum of the same amount and with disposal costs added. City of Tallahassee residential waste management customers requesting a pickup of bulky items, yard waste or construction and demolition debris. The rate is timed, travel time is not included, and the per ton disposal fees on the same sheet are $63.05 for garbage, $50.18 for clean yard waste, $63.05 for mixed bulk waste and $160 for tires.
Arrange it
Submit the special pickup request, allow three to five business days from the request date, and have the material staged where the crew can reach it when the visit is scheduled.

The charge is timed, so a large or slow load costs more than the minimum, and the disposal fee category depends on what the load contains. Commercial customers always need a special pickup rather than the residential bulky round.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Tallahassee runs its own collection inside the city limits and the curb is the main route, because garbage and recycling come once a week and bulky items and yard waste come every other week on the Red or Blue week that applies to the address. A bulky item can be up to six feet long by four feet wide by four feet high, which covers a mattress, a couch, an appliance, a disassembled swing set and a grill. What does not fit, or what cannot sit at the curb, goes one of two ways: to a Cash for Trash event on the third Saturday of April or October, where hazardous waste and oversized bulky items are taken and a City utility bill earns a credit, or to a special pickup requested through the City and billed by the quarter hour with per ton disposal fees added.
