The local disposal guide
Tallahassee collects its own waste inside the city limits, and the City states that it is the exclusive provider for everything except recycling and construction and demolition debris. The rhythm is what takes getting used to. Garbage and recycling run once a week, while bulky items and yard waste run every other week on a Red or Blue week, and an address has one specific pickup day inside that week. A bulky item can be up to six feet long by four feet wide by four feet high, which takes in a mattress, a couch, an appliance, a disassembled swing set and a grill. Anything larger goes to a Cash for Trash event or becomes a special pickup billed by the quarter hour with disposal costs added. Hazardous waste is the one thing the City will not touch on the route, and bulky items that cannot sit at the curb go to the same events.

Garbage and recycling containers go to the curb no earlier than the day before the scheduled pickup and are returned to the storage area near the home no later than the day following service. Bulky items and yard waste use a longer window, and they go out no sooner than the weekend before the pickup date. A pickup day that falls on or after a City holiday may move one day later.
