The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.
Flat-screen TVs
Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.
Tube TVs
An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.
TV stands and other electronics
The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions of every type are free at the bi-annual Champaign County electronics collection, which the City describes as the only free local television route, with year round options limited to donation and CRT monitors at Goodwill.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Champaign County residents at the bi-annual Champaign County residential electronics collection event, typically held in May and October, with registration required in advance. The City states that these events are the only way for residents to get rid of old televisions for free in the area, and Goodwill accepts working and non working CRT computer monitors free of charge year round through the Dell Reconnect program.
When & how
At the bi-annual county collection event, typically in May and October, with registration completed in advance. Year round, a working flat panel television can be donated to a resale outlet and a CRT computer monitor can be taken to Goodwill during store hours.
Get it ready
Register before the event rather than arriving unannounced, and keep electronics out of the recycling cart, which refuses them along with batteries, light bulbs and scrap metal. Erase personal data before a device leaves the house, and remember that year round resale outlets take only working flat panel sets, so a tube television waits for the next collection event.
Recycling takes plastics one through seven, glass, cardboard, paper, cartons and cans, and it refuses batteries, building materials, ceramic dishes, cookware, electronics, food soiled material, garbage bags, hazardous materials, light bulbs, medical supplies, scrap metal, polystyrene and window glass. Those refusals are what send a load to the collection events, to a receiving site or to the hauler.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

The City publishes no fee for either event and both require registration, so confirm the date, the accepted material and any charge on the registration site or on 217-403-4780 before loading the car.
Arrange it
Register in advance for the bi-annual electronics collection or the annual household hazardous waste collection, then bring the material on the event day.
The electronics event is the only free local television route and the hazardous waste event is the only local chemical option, and the current hazardous waste events accept oil based paints and stains alone.

Does my old TV have to work?+
Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.
Where do old televisions go?+

What does it cost to get rid of a large item?+
That depends on the route rather than on a city rate. No. The City states there is no permanent local drop off for residents, and the annual state sponsored collection event in the summer is described as the only local option, with registration required and help available on 217-403-4780. Where do tires and motor oil go?+
Neither has a standing city drop off. Tires depend on occasional county collection events or a tire retailer, and some businesses will only take them when new tires are bought there.
