The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

The first thing to know about Champaign is that the City collects nothing itself. Licensed private haulers manage all solid waste in the city, so a mattress, a couch, an appliance or a pile of boxes is a conversation with the hauler on the account rather than a municipal appointment. What the City does control is the recycling side of that service, the multifamily program, and two free seasonal yard waste collections with a holiday tree collection each January. For the items the curbside carts will not take, the City publishes a long disposal directory that routes furniture, mattresses and appliances to donation first and to the hauler or a transfer station second, sends construction and demolition material to two named receiving sites, and points electronics and household chemicals to the county collection events it co-hosts with the state.

Trash and recycling through a licensed hauler

Accepted with preparation

The City collects no trash or recycling, and licensed private haulers run all solid waste service, with curbside recycling built into the same bill for buildings of four units or fewer.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no collection rate because it does not provide the service. Licensed private haulers set their own charges, and single-family curbside recycling is included with the regular trash service at no extra cost under City ordinance, so confirm the cart size, the collection day and the amount with the hauler on the account.
When & how
Set by the licensed hauler rather than the City, which states that it does not regulate trash or recycling collection hours. A building of one to four units receives curbside recycling as part of the same trash service at no extra cost.
Get it ready
Recyclables do not need to be sorted, and the accepted material covers plastics one through seven, glass, corrugated cardboard, boxboard, paper bags, magazines, newspaper, mixed paper, cartons, tin, steel and aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans and clean foil, with containers rinsed and plastics and boxes flattened. Keep batteries, building materials, ceramic dishes, cookware, electronics, food soiled material, garbage bags, hazardous materials, light bulbs, medical supplies, scrap metal, polystyrene and window glass out of the recycling cart.

Furniture and large household items

Special rules apply

There is no city bulky item pickup, so furniture goes to a donation outlet when it still works and to the licensed hauler for disposal when it does not.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no bulky item rate because it collects no trash, and its directory sends a piece that is not reusable to the garbage hauler for disposal options. Confirm the item, the pickup and the amount with the licensed hauler on the account.
When & how
Arrange the pickup with the hauler rather than setting the piece at the curb on the assumption it will go with household trash, since the City collection is not the operator.
Get it ready
Offer usable furniture for reuse first, because the City lists Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana, Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity ReStore as donation routes, with Immigrant Services able to pick up items. Keep a piece that is not reusable off the sidewalk and confirm with the hauler where it should go.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

A mattress in good condition can be donated and picked up, while one that is not reusable goes to the hauler or to a transfer station for a fee.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no mattress rate, because disposal runs through the licensed hauler, and the transfer station charge for a drop off is set by the station. Confirm the item and the charge with the hauler or with the Republic Services transfer station on 217-384-2274 before moving the piece.
When & how
Arrange a donation pickup or a hauler pickup rather than putting the mattress out for a city collection, which does not exist.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and wrapped if it is being donated, since Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana and Empty Tomb both handle reusable bedding, and contact the hauler first for a piece that is stained or broken. A non reusable mattress can also be taken to the Republic Services transfer station at 921 Saline Ct. in Urbana for a fee.
City where do I recycle it directory with the disposal and donation routes for furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, construction debris, tires, carpet and chemicals

Appliances

Special rules apply

A working appliance can be donated, and a non working unit goes to one of the recyclers that take white goods.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no appliance rate because it does not collect, and it directs residents to recyclers that set their own fees, so call ahead for acceptable items and any charge. Confirm the pickup with the hauler as well if the unit is going out with household waste.
When & how
Arrange donation or a recycler drop off rather than a city pickup, since the City runs no collection and no appliance route.
Get it ready
Donate a unit that still works, because the City lists Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana and Habitat for Humanity ReStore for working appliances. For a unit that does not work, the City names Best Buy, Mack's Twin City Recycling and Mervis Recycling, and it asks residents to call first for acceptable items and fees, since some sites take air conditioners, refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers while others do not.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions of every type are free at the bi-annual Champaign County electronics collection, which the City describes as the only free local television route, with year round options limited to donation and CRT monitors at Goodwill.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Champaign County residents at the bi-annual Champaign County residential electronics collection event, typically held in May and October, with registration required in advance. The City states that these events are the only way for residents to get rid of old televisions for free in the area, and Goodwill accepts working and non working CRT computer monitors free of charge year round through the Dell Reconnect program.
When & how
At the bi-annual county collection event, typically in May and October, with registration completed in advance. Year round, a working flat panel television can be donated to a resale outlet and a CRT computer monitor can be taken to Goodwill during store hours.
Get it ready
Register before the event rather than arriving unannounced, and keep electronics out of the recycling cart, which refuses them along with batteries, light bulbs and scrap metal. Erase personal data before a device leaves the house, and remember that year round resale outlets take only working flat panel sets, so a tube television waits for the next collection event.

Construction and demolition debris

Accepted with preparation

Construction and demolition material has two named receiving sites, and the City publishes the minimum charge and the no household waste rule at the first one.

City cost & eligibility
From $127 for the published minimum charge for construction and demolition material at the GFL site at 910 Saline Ct. in Urbana, which takes C&D material only with no household waste. Anyone delivering construction and demolition material, with the load limited to C&D material at the GFL site and a second option at Illini Recycling on 420 Paul Ave. in Champaign, which the City lists without a published rate.
When & how
Deliver the load to a receiving site during its business hours, since the City runs no curbside or drop off program for this material and its directory names only the two sites.
Get it ready
Keep household waste out of the load if it is going to the GFL site, which takes construction and demolition material only. Note that building materials are refused in the recycling cart, so a renovation load goes to a site or to the hauler rather than into the blue bin, and scrap metal is refused there too even though the recyclers in the directory take it separately.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named nowhere in the City directory, so the machine is confirmed with the hauler before anything is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for an item it does not name and collects nothing at the curb itself, so call the licensed hauler on the account and confirm whether the machine is picked up with household material, whether it needs its own arrangement and what it costs.
When & how
Arrange the pickup with the hauler rather than setting the machine out for a city collection, which does not exist.
Get it ready
Describe the machine when calling, break down what comes apart, and keep any loose weights with the frame so they travel as one lot. A machine with substantial metal content may also be worth offering to one of the recyclers the City lists for metal rather than sending it to disposal.

Yard waste and holiday trees

Accepted with preparation

The City runs two free seasonal yard waste collections and a holiday tree collection, with paper bags, tight branch limits and a published zone schedule.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residential properties inside the Champaign city limits, which receive the spring and fall collections and the holiday tree collection free of charge. A household that misses the seasonal window can use the Landscape Recycling Center for a fee or a hauler that offers yard waste service for an additional charge.
When & how
Two free seasonal collections each year, one in spring and one in fall, plus a holiday tree collection in January. The 2026 fall program runs October 26 through December 11 with three collection dates for each zone and the zone, day and date table published by the City, and material is at the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day.
Get it ready
Use 30 gallon paper yard waste bags, because yard waste in other bags or containers is not collected, and place the bags within 10 feet of the curb of a public street and at least five feet from trees, mailboxes, light poles and fire hydrants. Bundle twigs and branches with non metallic twine or bag them, with branches no larger than two inches in diameter and three and a half feet long and bundles no larger than 18 inches across. Burning leaves is prohibited at all times.

Paint, chemicals and hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

There is no permanent local chemical drop off, and the annual collection event takes only oil based paints and stains, so latex paint is dried and put in the garbage.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no fee for the annual one day collection, which is state sponsored and registration based, so confirm the registration, the date and any charge before the material leaves the house. Confirm battery, antifreeze and motor oil routes separately, since none of them has a standing local drop off either.
When & how
The annual state sponsored household hazardous waste collection runs once a year, typically in the summer, with registration required in advance and no permanent local drop off available the rest of the year. The City's registration line is 217-403-4780.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous material out of the recycling cart, which refuses it, and out of the garbage as well. The current collection events accept only oil based paints and stains, so latex paint is dried with cat litter, sand or a paint hardener or poured onto newspaper to dry, after which the dried material goes in the regular garbage. Compact fluorescent bulbs go to a retailer drop off rather than the trash, and antifreeze, motor oil and gasoline depend on the collection event or a retailer take back.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Start with the hauler, not the City

Champaign's curbside service belongs to licensed private haulers, and the City states that it collects neither trash nor recycling. Anything that will not fit the cart, including furniture, a mattress, an appliance or an exercise machine, is arranged with the hauler on the account rather than reported to the City.

City recycling programs page stating that the City does not collect trash or recycling and describing the single family curbside and Feed The Thing multifamily programsCity where do I recycle it directory with the disposal and donation routes for furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, construction debris, tires, carpet and chemicals

Offer the item for reuse first

The City's directory leads with donation for anything still in working order. Furniture and reusable household items go to Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana, Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity ReStore, mattresses and box springs in good condition can be picked up by Immigrant Services or Empty Tomb, and working appliances go to Immigrant Services or ReStore.

City where do I recycle it directory with the disposal and donation routes for furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, construction debris, tires, carpet and chemicals

Know what the cart and bin refuse

Recycling takes plastics one through seven, glass, cardboard, paper, cartons and cans, and it refuses batteries, building materials, ceramic dishes, cookware, electronics, food soiled material, garbage bags, hazardous materials, light bulbs, medical supplies, scrap metal, polystyrene and window glass. Those refusals are what send a load to the collection events, to a receiving site or to the hauler.

Watch the seasonal yard waste windows

Yard waste does not run year round. The City offers two free seasonal collections, one in spring and one in fall, plus a holiday tree collection in January, and the fall 2026 window runs October 26 through December 11 with three dates per zone. Material goes out in 30 gallon paper bags by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day, and a load that misses the window goes to the Landscape Recycling Center or to a hauler for a fee.

Licensed private hauler

Any Champaign household or building that needs trash service, and the route for furniture, mattresses, appliances and other items the cart will not take.

Cost & conditions
Haulers set their own rates because the City provides no collection, so confirm the cart size, the collection day, the bulky item terms and the amount directly with the hauler. Curbside recycling is included with the trash service at no extra cost for buildings of four units or fewer.
Arrange it
Choose a licensed hauler, set up the account, and ask the same company about the oversized item rather than treating it as a separate municipal service.

The City does not regulate collection hours, and the hauler's rules decide what is picked up at the curb, so an item the hauler will not take needs one of the donation, receiving site or collection event routes instead.

Feed The Thing multifamily recycling

An apartment building, condominium or shared housing property with five or more units that needs no-sort recycling for its residents.

Cost & conditions
$3.2 for the published monthly assessment per apartment unit billed to the property owner to cover the program cost. Multifamily buildings of five or more units and shared housing such as fraternities and sororities, which receive free 95 gallon blue recycling carts from the City. Group housing is assessed a published per resident charge based on the facility capacity instead.
Arrange it
Enroll the property, place the City provided carts for resident use with no sorting required, and contact the City to request more bins or change the recycling schedule.

The program covers recyclable material only and refuses batteries, building materials, electronics, hazardous materials, light bulbs, medical supplies and scrap metal, so those items still need the collection events or a receiving site.

County collection events

A household with a television, computer, monitor, microwave or household chemical that has no year round local route.

Cost & conditions
The City publishes no fee for either event and both require registration, so confirm the date, the accepted material and any charge on the registration site or on 217-403-4780 before loading the car.
Arrange it
Register in advance for the bi-annual electronics collection or the annual household hazardous waste collection, then bring the material on the event day.

The electronics event is the only free local television route and the hazardous waste event is the only local chemical option, and the current hazardous waste events accept oil based paints and stains alone.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Champaign households run almost everything through a private hauler, because the City collects no trash or recycling and licensed companies manage the whole solid waste stream. Curbside recycling rides along with that trash service at no extra cost in buildings of four units or fewer, and buildings of five or more units use the Feed The Thing program. Everything the cart will not take has a named route in the City's disposal directory. Reusable furniture, mattresses and appliances go to Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore or Empty Tomb, and a non reusable piece goes to the hauler or, for mattresses and carpet, to the Republic Services transfer station on Saline Ct. in Urbana for a fee. Construction and demolition material goes to GFL on Saline Ct. in Urbana or to Illini Recycling on Paul Ave. in Champaign. Televisions and other electronics go to the bi-annual county collection event with registration, which the City calls the only free local television route, while CRT monitors are also taken free at Goodwill. Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How do large items leave a Champaign home?

Through the licensed hauler on the account, because the City does not collect trash and runs no bulky item route of its own. The City's directory suggests donating reusable furniture to Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana, Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity ReStore and contacting the garbage hauler for disposal of anything that is not reusable.Official guidance

What do I do with an old mattress?

Donate it if it is still in good condition. Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana may pick up mattresses and box springs and Empty Tomb can arrange pickups in Champaign, Urbana or Savoy. If it is not reusable, contact the garbage hauler for disposal or take it to the Republic Services transfer station at 921 Saline Ct. for a fee.Official guidance

Where does an appliance go?

Donate it if it still works. The City lists Immigrant Services of Champaign Urbana and Habitat for Humanity ReStore for working appliances, and for a non working unit it names Best Buy, Mack's Twin City Recycling and Mervis Recycling, with a note to call first for acceptable items and fees.Official guidance

Where do old televisions go?

To the bi-annual Champaign County residential electronics collection, where televisions of every type and size are accepted free and registration is required. The City states this is the only way for residents to get rid of old televisions for free locally, and Goodwill takes CRT computer monitors free year round through the Dell Reconnect program.Official guidance

What else can go to the electronics event?

The event takes most consumer electronics, and the City's directory also names it for microwaves, holiday string lights and other small devices that have no year round local recycling route. Cell phones have a standing option through retailer and ecoATM drop off, and the event requires registration each time.Official guidance

Who handles waste collection in Champaign?

Licensed private haulers, because the City does not collect trash or recycling at all. Public Works on 217-403-4700 runs the recycling requirements, the multifamily program and the seasonal yard waste collections, while the hauler on the account handles the carts and anything arranged as an extra pickup.Official guidance

Do the free collections cover my address?

The yard waste collections, the holiday tree collection and the multifamily program apply to residential properties inside the Champaign city limits. Recycling through the hauler is required for buildings of up to four units inside the city, while an address outside the city limits sits in a different jurisdiction.Official guidance

What does it cost to get rid of a large item?

That depends on the route rather than on a city rate. Donation is free through the outlets the City lists, the hauler charges whatever its own bulky item terms provide, a mattress drop off at the Republic Services transfer station carries a fee, and construction and demolition material at GFL starts from a published minimum charge.Official guidance

Is there a permanent hazardous waste drop off?

No. The City states there is no permanent local drop off for residents, and the annual state sponsored collection event in the summer is described as the only local option, with registration required and help available on 217-403-4780. The current events accept only oil based paints and stains.Official guidance

Where do tires and motor oil go?

Neither has a standing city drop off. Tires depend on occasional county collection events or a tire retailer, and some businesses will only take them when new tires are bought there. Motor oil and gasoline are accepted occasionally by auto parts stores and oil change shops, with the state collection events as the fallback.Official guidance
