A mattress falls under the city's ban on miscellaneous junk in the carts, and neither the city nor the district publishes a mattress programme, so bedding has to be confirmed before it is set out.

No mattress entry or rate is published at either level, so confirm whether the item qualifies for the Street Department special pick-up and what it costs by calling 853-6431.

Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and whole, count a mattress and box spring separately when asking about the pickup, and do not leave it beside the cart, because the cart is for kitchen garbage only.
Hammond empties its own carts, and the city is explicit that they carry kitchen garbage only, bagged in plastic, under 50 pounds, out the night before the collection day, in a city cart. Yard waste goes in 30 gallon biodegradable paper bags on the same day, from the first week of April through the last week of November, and the bags must hold only leaves, grass, plants or twigs.
Human feces, brake fluid, animal carcasses, gasoline, cement, oil, wood, bleach, sand, ammonia, dirt, pool chemicals, sod, branches, oil based paint, roofing shingles, yard waste and miscellaneous junk are all banned from the green carts. The city says some of those items can be picked up by the Street Department through a special pick-up arranged at 853-6431 and that others can only be dropped at a Lake County hazardous waste drop-off between April and October.
