White goods are the appliances that use electricity, oil, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas to preserve or cook food or to wash or dry clothing and utensils, and the city lists refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washers, dryers, ovens, ranges, air conditioners and hot water heaters. They are carved out of the weekly bulky allowance, so a unit goes to the Convenience Center or onto the contractor appointment route that runs one day a month.
City cost & eligibility
From $20 per white good at the City Convenience Center, with Freon units such as air conditioners and refrigerators at a higher published rate, and the curbside appointment route quoted by the contractor. Taunton residents. White goods may also be placed at the curb one day per month by appointment with the city contractor where the contractor provides that collection.
When & how
The Convenience Center takes white goods Wednesday and Friday from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The curbside appointment runs one day per month and has to be scheduled with the contractor by phone.
Get it ready
Empty the unit first and tell the receiving site whether it holds Freon, because the regulation splits white goods into Freon-containing and non-Freon units and the drop-off rate is higher for a Freon unit. Keep the appliance out of the bulky pile, because white goods are excluded from that allowance.
One bulky item per week, and the carve-outs are strict
The city collects a single bulky item per week from each residential unit that has a pay-as-you-throw set out, and the item leaves on the normal trash day. A mattress, a box spring, white goods, bulk metal, a television, a computer monitor, a sofa bed and a recliner are all outside that allowance and need one of the other routes, so a pile built from the wrong categories will not be taken.
Recycling runs every other week on the same day as trash
The city is split into an A week and a B week and each half sets recycling out every other week on its normal trash day, which the city publishes in a collection schedule listing the addresses. Recycling is single stream, so paper, cardboard and commingled containers can share the cart, but the material goes in loose and clean rather than in plastic bags, and a cart holding mixed waste and recyclables is not collected. One cart comes free with the service and extra carts are available from the Department of Public Works at 90 Ingell Street.
