Mattresses and box springs are the two items the city prices outside its flat bulk fee. They are accepted in any size at the drop-off center by appointment at the higher mattress rate, and the contractor's curbside bulk route charges far more per piece for the same item, so hauling them yourself is much cheaper.
City cost & eligibility
$15 per mattress or box spring dropped off at the Residential Drop-Off Center, where the city prices these two items above the flat per item fee. Worcester residents with proof of residency and a bulk waste appointment; the curbside contractor charges its own per mattress and per box spring rate.

Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and wrapped if the weather is wet, bring it whole rather than cut down, bring proof of residency for the current year, and pay by check or exact cash on arrival.
Only trash in an official City of Worcester yellow bag is collected, and the bags are sold at local retailers and at the 311 customer service center. Small bags carry a 15 pound weight limit and large bags a 30 pound limit. Trash and recycling go out together between 6 and 7:30 in the morning, and if a collection day falls on a holiday that day and the rest of the week slide one day later. Anything that does not fit a bag, or that weighs more than the bag allows, is a bulk item.
The city is direct about this: large items left on the curb are a violation of municipal ordinance, and illegal dumping carries a fine. Bulk items such as furniture, appliances and electronics have to go to the Residential Drop-Off Center by appointment, or onto the city contractor's curbside bulk route if the household books and pays for it. On the contractor route, bulk items must be on the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day, and the fee is not refundable without a 24 hour cancellation notice.
The drop-off center at 1065 Millbury Street is for Worcester residents, so bring proof of residency along with a driver's licence or state identification, and if you use a property tax or water invoice it has to be for the current year. Payment is by check or exact cash because no change is available on site, commercial vehicles are not permitted, and waste from a commercial source is refused.
