The local disposal guide
Southfield contracts weekly curbside collection for single-family homes and folds the cost into the summer tax bill, with collection days set by neighbourhood and everything at the curb by 7 a.m. on the pickup day. Large items ride the same truck under a simple limit: no more than two bulk pieces a week, which is the same allowance the city gives furniture and white goods, and the city counts all appliances and furniture as white goods. Two item rules matter more than the rest. A mattress is collected only when it is wrapped in a mattress disposal bag or a mattress storage bag, and an appliance has to have every door and lid removed for safety before it goes out. Anything beyond the weekly limit, such as a move or a remodel, is booked as a special pickup with the hauler. The rubbish route takes only household material, so hazardous waste, building materials, tires, concrete, earth, logs and stumps stay off it. Paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries, bulbs, garden chemicals, sharps and electronics go to the RRRASOC household hazardous waste programme, which runs events for its nine member communities including Southfield and keeps a free weekday drop-off open at ERG Environmental Services in Livonia between events.

The handoff matters
Trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk items all go to the curb on the regular rubbish day, set out after 4 p.m. the afternoon before and no later than 7 a.m. on the pickup day. Mixed refuse belongs in bags or watertight containers of 32 gallons or less with tight fitting lids and handles, yard waste goes in paper bags or marked containers at least three feet from the trash, and everything at the curb has to be a size and weight one person can manage.

When a move or a remodel produces more than that, or a load such as kitchen cabinets, a fence, broken concrete, dirt or piles of stone is too large for the route, the city says the work has to be handled under contract with the rubbish contractor or an independent contractor, and Priority Waste can be called on (586) 228-1200 to arrange a special pickup.
