When & how

Keep each piece to a size and weight one person can manage, set it out after 4 p.m. the afternoon before and before 7 a.m. on the collection day, and keep cleaning fluids, paint thinner, commercial waste, drywall, 2x4 studs in bulk, firewood and kitchen cabinets out of the load.
Everything goes out by 7 a.m. on the collection day
Trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk items all go to the curb on the regular rubbish day, set out after 4 p.m. the afternoon before and no later than 7 a.m. on the pickup day. Mixed refuse belongs in bags or watertight containers of 32 gallons or less with tight fitting lids and handles, yard waste goes in paper bags or marked containers at least three feet from the trash, and everything at the curb has to be a size and weight one person can manage.
Two bulk pieces a week, and bigger loads are booked
The rubbish route takes no more than two bulk items at the curb each week, which is the same allowance that covers furniture and appliances under the white goods collection. When a move or a remodel produces more than that, or a load such as kitchen cabinets, a fence, broken concrete, dirt or piles of stone is too large for the route, the city says the work has to be handled under contract with the rubbish contractor or an independent contractor, and Priority Waste can be called on (586) 228-1200 to arrange a special pickup.
A mattress needs a bag and an appliance needs its doors off
Two preparation rules decide whether a large item is collected in Southfield. A mattress or box spring has to be wrapped in a mattress disposal bag or a mattress storage bag before it goes to the curb, and an appliance has to have every door and lid removed for safety first. Both then go out on the regular rubbish day inside the two piece weekly allowance.
