The local disposal guide
Sterling Heights runs one weekly collection day for refuse, recycling and bulky household items through Priority Waste under a ten year city contract, and the cost sits in the annual refuse tax on the property tax bill rather than in a separate collection bill. Refuse goes into a 95-gallon cart that holds about eight kitchen bags, everything is at the curb by 7 a.m. and not before 1 p.m. the day before, and the automated arm needs the lid opening facing the street. A couch, a mattress, a dresser or a refrigerator that will not fit the cart is a bulk item on the same day at no extra charge, up to five items a week, with refrigerator and freezer doors removed and a soiled mattress sealed in a bag. Televisions and computers stay out of the recycling cart, so the route the city publishes for them is the DPW electronics drop-off with Great Lakes Electronics, and paint and solvents wait for the city or county hazardous waste events.
