Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions are on the allowed bulk list, so a screen goes out with the regular bulk collection. Computers, laptops, monitors, printers, phones and similar devices have their own route: a no-cost city drop off day held twice a year, usually in the spring and the fall, which accepts flat screen monitors and televisions only and has the certified recycler destroy computer hard drives. The Recycle Center itself refuses electronics and computer equipment.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes the electronic recycling drop off day as no cost and open to residents twice a year and it publishes no separate rate for a television going out with the bulk collection. Check the city calendar for the next event date and confirm your address's service with the Department of Public Service on 734-728-1770.
When & how
Televisions ride the every other week bulk day on your recycling day. The electronics drop off day runs twice a year, usually in the spring and the fall, with the date published on the city calendar.
Get it ready
Remove the ink cartridges from a printer as the city asks, back up and wipe a drive knowing the city's certified recycler destroys computer hard drives, and keep electronics out of the blue recycling bin and away from the Recycle Center, which refuses them.

Glass, batteries, clothing and appliances stay out of the blue bin

The blue bin is single stream recycling for empty, clean and dry material and it takes one bin per property. Glass is not accepted curbside, so glass beverage and food containers go to the Westland Recycle Center at 37137 Marquette rinsed and dry. Batteries go into the drop boxes at City Hall, the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, the William P. Faust Library or the Recycle Center, clothing and shoes go into the blue Mission Green bins, and old appliances go to the Recycle Center rather than the bin, which also means nothing should be bagged because plastic bags jam the sorting equipment.

Use the every other week bulk collection

A household with a couch, a mattress, a refrigerator, a television or another large item that will not fit in the city trash bin, and no wish to book anything.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no separate bulky item rate because the collection comes with the service it provides to households, and the only amounts it prints are the annual leases for an additional city trash bin at 48 dollars for the 64 gallon size and 71 dollars for the 96 gallon size. Confirm your address's eligibility and any charge with the Department of Public Service on 734-728-1770 or Priority Waste on 1-586-228-1200.
Arrange it
Set the item on the easement behind the curb by 7:00 AM on your bulk day, which is your regular recycling day and comes every other week, with 4 feet of clearance from the other bins, and leave up to 2 large items or up to 8 extra bags.

Automobile parts including tires and rims, construction and remodeling debris, concrete, bricks and dirt, fencing, boards, paneling and pallets, gas-powered equipment, hot tubs, sheds, swing sets, trampolines, pianos, picnic tables, pool tables and windows or glass doors are refused, and carpet has to be cut into 4 foot lengths and bundled under 50 pounds.

Save devices for the twice yearly electronics drop off day

A household with a computer, laptop, printer, phone, router, small appliance or flat screen television that should be recycled rather than thrown out.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The city states that it holds a no-cost drop off day for electronic recycling twice per year, usually in the spring and the fall, so residents pay nothing at the event.
Arrange it
Watch the city calendar for the spring or fall date, then bring the devices to that drop off with ink cartridges removed from any printer, knowing the certified recycler destroys computer hard drives.

The event runs twice a year rather than on demand, monitors and televisions are accepted in flat screen form only, small appliances have to be microwave size or smaller and must contain no Freon, and the Recycle Center does not take electronics at any time.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

A Westland household usually does not need a trip. Trash goes in the city-issued black bin on the regular collection day, recycling goes in the blue bin every other week on that same day, and bulky items ride the bulk collection that runs every other week on the recycling day with no appointment and no scheduling call. Each service takes up to 2 large items that cannot fit into a trash can or up to 8 extra bags, with a tip that 2 large items may be paired with up to 2 extra bags, and the allowed list names furniture, mattresses, appliances including dryers and refrigerators, televisions and toilets or sinks, while carpet has to be cut into 4 foot lengths, bundled and kept under 50 pounds a bundle. Everything goes on the easement behind the curb by 7:00 AM with 4 feet of clearance from the other containers, and collection runs from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. When the curb will not take something, the Westland Recycle Center at 37137 Marquette is the local drop off for glass, scrap metal, batteries of every type, cardboard, clothing, cookware, grills without tanks and household appliances including refrigerators with the doors and Freon removed, open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. Electronics are the exception in both directions: televisions are allowed at the curb, while computers, laptops, printers and phones wait for the no-cost electronics drop off day that the city holds twice a year, usually in the spring and the fall. Batteries go into the drop boxes at City Hall, 36300 Warren Road, the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, 32150 Dorsey Street, the William P. Faust Library, 6123 Central City Parkway, or the Recycle Center. Paints, stains, lawn chemicals, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, mercury items and fluorescent bulbs go to Wayne County's four household hazardous waste collections a year, or with a voucher picked up at 3600 Commerce Court, Building E in Wayne on weekdays to the county contractor's Livonia site. What has no local route at all is renovation material and tires: construction and remodeling debris, shingles, drywall, concrete, bricks, dirt, fencing, boards, paneling, pallets, tires and rims are refused at the curb and at the Recycle Center, so those need a licensed hauler or the contractor doing the work. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Westland.

How much does TV removal cost in Westland?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Westland?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Can a television go out with the trash in Westland?

A television is named on the city's allowed bulk pickup list, so it can be set out with the bulk collection that runs every other week on your recycling day. Computers, laptops, printers, phones and similar devices go to the city's no-cost electronic recycling drop off day instead, which runs twice a year, usually in the spring and the fall, and accepts flat screen televisions and monitors only.Official guidance

Who handles trash and bulk pickup in Westland?

Priority Waste collects for the city under contract, and the Department of Public Service, Sanitation Division, manages the service. Report missed trash, recycling, bulk or compost collection and other service concerns to Priority Waste on 1-586-228-1200 or westlandldc@prioritywaste.com, and report a damaged, missing or additional bin to the city on 734-728-1770. Priority Waste also handles move out quotes directly.Official guidance

Where exactly do I put bins and bulky items out?

On the easement behind the curb, with the containers and the bulk pile spaced at least 4 feet apart so the collection arms can reach each one. Do not put them in the street, and keep them clear of parked cars, fire hydrants, trees and utility poles. In winter, clear a spot in the snow first, because a bin left in the street interferes with plowing.Official guidance

Is there a drop off besides the curb?

Yes, the Westland Recycle Center at 37137 Marquette, open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday. It takes what curbside recycling will not, including glass, all types of scrap metal, all types of batteries, cardboard and paper, clothing and shoes, cookware, grills without tanks and household appliances such as refrigerators with the doors and Freon removed, stoves, air conditioners, washers and dryers. It does not take electronics or computer equipment, construction materials, concrete, propane tanks, paint or household chemicals, medications or food.Official guidance
