The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Plymouth does not collect garbage: residents choose and pay a licensed hauler, and the city staff do not manage waste service. What the city does run is curbside recycling through Republic Services every other week on the city utility bill, a Recycling Drop-Off Site beside the Maintenance Facility at 14900 23rd Avenue North that takes recyclables and nothing else, a free Yard Waste Site for Plymouth, Medicine Lake, Wayzata and Long Lake residents, and a free used oil and antifreeze drop-off. Electronics and household hazardous waste leave the city system for Hennepin County Drop-off Facilities, where most electronics are accepted with a charge on some items and household hazardous waste including paint, batteries and fluorescent bulbs is free, and the city takes electronics itself only at the annual spring Drop-Off Day. Yard and tree waste may not go in the trash under state law, and furniture, carpet and bulky items may not be left at the recycling drop-off site.

City cost & eligibility
Hennepin County accepts televisions including CRT, LCD, projection and plasma screens at its drop-off facilities and charges a fee for them without printing an amount, so call 612-348-3777 for current pricing, and note the limit of five of each item type per household per 12 month period.

Special rules apply

Plymouth publishes no construction route, and the recycling drop-off site refuses project material, so a roll-off hauler has to be arranged.

Get it ready
Keep lumber, sod, soil, stumps, rock and construction material out of the yard waste site, which rejects loads containing prohibited material, and keep paint and chemicals on the county hazardous waste route instead.

Recycling runs every other week and comes with the utility bill

Curbside recycling is collected every other week on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the address, carts go to the curb by 6 a.m., and recycling and organics are paid through the city utility bill rather than by the hauler. Extra recycling is not collected outside the cart but may be taken to the Recycling Drop-Off Site, and the service stays with the property and cannot be paused while the household owns it.

Yard waste, furniture and hazardous products have their own destinations

It is against state law to put yard and tree waste in the trash, and haulers must offer curbside yard waste service, which may carry a fee, while the free Yard Waste Site takes lawn rakings, leaves, soft garden waste, tree waste, brush, logs and diseased trees from residents of Plymouth, Medicine Lake, Wayzata and Long Lake. The Recycling Drop-Off Site refuses furniture, bulky items, carpet, rugs, plastic bags, shredded paper, Styrofoam, trash and paint, electronics and hazardous waste do not go in the trash, and unused paint must be recycled at a paint drop-off.

Set up garbage service with a licensed hauler

A Plymouth household that needs garbage collection, since the city does not provide it.

Cost & conditions
The city does not manage waste service and publishes no hauler rates, so the hauler you choose sets the monthly charge and any large item or yard waste fee, and the city recommends reviewing the service level and fees on the hauler's billing statement.
Arrange it
Choose a hauler from the city's licensed list, set the cart at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and expect collection anytime between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Yard and tree waste cannot go in the trash under state law, the city does not manage service complaints, and curbside recycling and organics are billed separately through the city utility.

Use a Hennepin County Drop-off Facility for electronics and hazardous products

A household with electronics, household hazardous products, batteries or unused paint.

Cost & conditions
Household hazardous waste is free at the county drop-off facilities, but the county charges a fee on some electronics such as monitors, laptops and televisions without publishing the amount, so call 612-348-3777 for current pricing on those items.
Arrange it
Take the material to a Hennepin County Drop-off Facility, and note the county limit of five of each electronic item type per household per 12 month period.

Residents are responsible for destroying private data because the county does not guarantee data security, batteries are no longer collected at public locations but are taken at the county drop-off facilities, and paint must be recycled at a paint drop-off while only empty, dried containers may be trashed.

Use the city Recycling Drop-Off Site and Yard Waste Site

A Plymouth household with recyclables, organics, yard waste or used oil to drop off.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The Recycling Drop-Off Site and the Yard Waste Site are free to Plymouth households, with curbside recycling and organics funded through the monthly solid waste fee on the city utility bill.
Arrange it
Take recyclables loose and unbagged to the Recycling Drop-Off Site at 14900 23rd Avenue North, which is open 7 days a week at all hours, and take yard waste to the same campus during its seasonal hours, with proof of address for the yard waste site.

The recycling site is for Plymouth residents and small Plymouth businesses only and is monitored, the yard waste site is limited to residents of Plymouth, Medicine Lake, Wayzata and Long Lake with no commercial haulers or landscapers, and both refuse material the other accepts.

Rent a roll-off container for a project

A household or contractor with construction debris or a large clean-out that the city sites refuse.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no construction or bulky rate and the licensed haulers set their own roll-off, hauling and disposal prices, so ask for a quote and confirm the receiving facility before the container is delivered.
Arrange it
Call a licensed hauler that offers roll-offs and agree the container size, the delivery and pickup dates and the disposal arrangement.

The Recycling Drop-Off Site takes curbside recyclables only and the Yard Waste Site rejects lumber, sod, soil, stumps, rock and dirt, so a project load cannot go to either city site.
