Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

A mattress is named on the city's approved bulky item list, so it goes out with the scheduled curbside bulky pickup rather than in the cart. Bulky pickup runs four times a year and each visit is limited to four cubic yards, so the collection has to be booked with the hauler.
Furniture is on the approved bulky item list for Joplin's franchised curbside service, so a couch or table comes out with a scheduled bulky pickup. Four cubic yards fit in one visit, which is roughly a room's worth of furniture.
Appliances are listed as unacceptable both at the curb and at the transfer station, so a washer, dryer, water heater or refrigerator is not part of the bulky pickup. The city guide routes them to a scrap metal processor, and a working unit can be donated instead.
The Joplin Recycling Center takes anything that ran on a cord or battery, which is the city's route for televisions, monitors, computers and small electronics. Televisions and computer monitors carry a fee, and none of this material belongs in the curbside recycling cart.
Small amounts of bundled or containerized construction and demolition debris can go out with a scheduled bulky pickup, and limited amounts are accepted at the transfer station. Large amounts and contractor volume are refused, so the packet keeps the boundary explicit.
A treadmill or weight machine is larger than the trash cart, so it has to go out with a scheduled bulky pickup rather than on a regular trash day. The city's published bulky list does not name exercise equipment, so confirm the item before it goes out.
Bulky pickup is four scheduled visits a year, up to four cubic yards each, inside the base monthly solid waste rate. Bigger clean-outs use the subsidized transfer station drop-off, which takes up to 2,000 pounds per trip from Joplin residents.
The handoff matters
From October 1, 2026 the hauler collects only trash that fits inside your single cart and will not pick up extra bags or items left beside it. Rent a second cart or enroll in recycling through Republic Services if you regularly have more, and remove carts you do not need so you are not billed for them.
