Get it ready

Garbage and bulk items go to the curb no later than 7 am on the scheduled pickup day. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the deadline moves to 6 am for every material, which is the same hour an appliance, metal item or television has to be out on its own appointment day.
A mattress is handled with care: seal it in a plastic mattress bag and secure the bag with duct tape before it goes to the curb. Paint has to be hardened, with absorbent mixed in and the can left open beside the garbage rather than inside a bag or can, and the lid goes into the regular trash. Syringes and other sharps go into a leak-proof, shatterproof container rather than the garbage.
Chemicals, batteries and tires never go in the pile
Hazardous materials of all kinds, including every fluorescent bulb, containers that held hazardous material, safes, aluminum siding, car parts, tires, rims, car batteries and automotive fluids are refused in the garbage and the recycling. Household chemicals go to the Westchester County facility in Valhalla by appointment, alkaline and carbon zinc batteries go in the regular trash, and other batteries go to the county, which the city hotline 914-813-5425 can explain.
