Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

The city rate schedule prices material that does not fit in the subscribed container: an extra is material that fits into a thirty two gallon container without being altered, and the schedule also carries a bulk rate for individual items placed at the curb, with a minimum service fee and a per item range that the hauler applies at its discretion.
A sofa or chair is larger than the subscribed container, so it leaves the house either as a bulky item at the curb under the city bulk rate or as garbage by volume at a Lane County transfer station, where upholstered furniture is charged on the garbage table.
Mattresses and box springs recycle free at the Glenwood transfer station in Eugene, up to four units per day, and every other Lane County transfer station charges them as garbage instead. The same units are also accepted at St. Vincent de Paul locations.
Major appliances are named unacceptable materials in the city collection rule, so they cannot ride in a curbside container. Lane County transfer stations take them at a per appliance charge, appliances containing refrigerant must be empty, cords must not be cut and refrigerants must not be drained.
Computers, monitors and televisions are named unacceptable materials in the city collection rule, so they cannot go in a garbage or recycling container. Eugene routes them to Lane County's household hazardous waste collection center at Glenwood, where collections run most Thursdays and Saturdays by appointment and are free for households, and to NextStep Recycling, St. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill.
Construction and demolition material does not ride in a residential container. The city rate schedule prices drop boxes between seven and fifty cubic yards per pull with the disposal fee charged at actual cost, and Lane County transfer stations charge the same material on their own construction and demolition table.
A treadmill or weight machine follows the same two routes as furniture: a licensed hauler may take it as a bulky item at the curb under the city bulk rate, and a Lane County transfer station charges the machine by volume as household garbage.
The handoff matters
A customer may put solid waste, recycling, yard debris and organics containers at the curb no earlier than 7 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection, and must take the empty containers back in no later than midnight on the collection day. The city also asks that empty garbage and recycling bins stay at the curb no more than twenty four hours, and a container may not leave the unobstructed paved part of a sidewalk less than three feet wide.
