The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Grants Pass does not run its own collection crews. The Josephine County and City of Grants Pass Solid Waste Agency oversees franchise agreements and sets rates, and two franchised haulers serve city addresses: Republic Services and Southern Oregon Sanitation. Both collect weekly garbage and recycling from the curb, and neither publishes a curbside bulky item service, so furniture, mattresses, appliances, tires and project debris are taken to a transfer station where the fees are printed item by item. Southern Oregon Sanitation's Redwood Avenue station inside the city charges per mattress, per furniture item and per appliance, with freon units priced higher, while the Josephine County station on Merlin Road recycles a freon free appliance for a lower fee. Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards and mice ride Oregon's free E-Cycle programme, household chemicals wait for the twice yearly collection events, and any construction or demolition load needs an asbestos clearance certificate before a station will accept it.

Couches, chairs and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture has a published drop-off price in Grants Pass rather than a curbside route. The Southern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle center on Redwood Avenue charges a set fee for each furniture item, and neither the city nor either franchised hauler publishes a bulky item pickup at the curb.

City cost & eligibility
$14.8 per furniture item dropped at the Southern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle center on Redwood Avenue, as printed on the station fee schedule effective June 1, 2026. Residents haul the item themselves to the transfer station and pay the published fee at the gate; there is no curbside bulky item collection to book instead.
When & how
Load the furniture and take it to 1381 Redwood Avenue, which is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., during yard hours.
Get it ready
Keep the load separated by material, keep household trash in its own load because mixed loads are charged as garbage, and check the minimum charge before a small trip since the gate applies it to every load.

Mattresses and box springs

When & how
Take the mattress to 1381 Redwood Avenue during station hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and whole, take it in a load with other mattresses or furniture if that keeps the trip efficient, and keep it out of the recycling depots, which accept only the recyclable material listed for them.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances have two published routes in Grants Pass. Republic Services sends them to the Josephine County Recycle and Transfer Station on Merlin Road, which charges one fee for a freon free appliance and a higher one for a unit containing freon, while the Southern Oregon Sanitation station on Redwood Avenue prices appliances per unit and freon units separately as well.

City cost & eligibility
From $10 per appliance recycled at the Josephine County transfer station on Merlin Road, where freon free units are ten dollars each and units containing freon are twenty five dollars each on the franchised hauler's published schedule. Resident drop-off; the alternative station on Redwood Avenue charges a different per appliance rate and prices freon units separately, so confirm which station suits the unit before loading.
When & how
Take the appliance to the Josephine County Recycle and Transfer Station at 1749 Merlin Road, or the Southern Oregon Sanitation station at 1381 Redwood Avenue, during open hours.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it upright, tape or tie the doors, and tell the gate whether the unit contains refrigerant because that changes the fee at both stations.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Grants Pass relies on Oregon's E-Cycle programme for electronics. Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards and mice can be dropped at the local E-Cycle collection sites, with Southern Oregon Sanitation on Redwood Avenue named, and the city warns that other electronics are not accepted for free, so anything off that list has to be checked by phone first.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for the covered Oregon E-Cycle items, namely televisions, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards and mice, at the named collection sites; the city states that other electronics are not accepted for free.
When & how
Take the covered devices to Southern Oregon Sanitation at 1381 Redwood Avenue, which is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and call ahead for anything not on the free list.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from computers and phones, keep cables and remotes with the device they belong to, keep electronics out of the curbside carts and the depots, and call before bringing a device that is not one of the covered items.
Recycling in the Grants Pass Area page listing the franchised providers and their depots and transfer stations, the battery locator, the transfer station route for non recyclable material, the twice yearly toxic and hazardous waste events, the yard waste options, the free Oregon E-Cycle item list with the warning that other electronics are not free, and the BottleDrop redemption centerSouthern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle centers page with the Redwood Avenue address and weekend hours in Grants Pass, the per item fees for mattresses, furniture, appliances, appliances with freon and tires, the cubic yard fees for trash, yard waste and roofing, the refused material list, the mixed load rule and the asbestos clearance certificate requirement for construction and demolition material

Construction and demolition material

Special rules apply

Project debris needs paperwork in Grants Pass. Southern Oregon Sanitation will not accept any construction or demolition material at its transfer stations without an asbestos clearance certification from a certified abatement company stating the material is asbestos free, valid for one year, and roofing material is priced by the cubic yard once it qualifies. The city publishes no construction collection of its own.

City cost & eligibility
No city construction route exists, and the transfer station prices the load by material and volume once the asbestos clearance certificate is in hand, with roofing at a published cubic yard rate and no single figure for a mixed load. Confirm the certificate, the volume and the fee with the station before loading.
When & how
Get the asbestos clearance certification first, then deliver the load to a transfer station during open hours, or arrange a private container for a larger project.
Get it ready
Keep material separated by type, arrange the abatement certification before any construction or demolition material leaves the site, keep paint and chemicals out of the load because stations refuse them, and keep treated or mixed debris out of the yard waste piles.

Treadmills and exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city page, the hauler guides or the transfer station fee schedule, which prices furniture, mattresses and appliances but says nothing about machines. A treadmill, therefore, has to be confirmed with the station before it is loaded.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise machine appears on the transfer station schedule, so there is no published price to quote. Call the station at 1381 Redwood Avenue before the trip, describe the machine and its size, and confirm whether it is charged as furniture or as loose material by volume.
When & how
Call the station first, then take the machine in during open hours and expect it to be handled either as a furniture item or as loose material by volume.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, keep the frame, deck and console together, and load it so the station attendant can see what the material is before it is tipped.

Bulky loads and transfer station pricing

Accepted with preparation

Grants Pass has no curbside bulky pickup, so the bulky route is the transfer station and the gate charges by what the load contains. The minimum charge covers up to one and a half cubic yards, household trash and yard waste are priced by the cubic yard on top of it, and single items such as mattresses, furniture and appliances have their own printed fees.

City cost & eligibility
From $25.15 per load at the Southern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle center on Redwood Avenue, where the minimum charge covers up to one and a half cubic yards and larger volumes of household trash, yard waste or roofing are charged by the cubic yard. Resident drop-off at the gate; single items such as mattresses, furniture and appliances are charged on the published per item schedule instead of by volume, and Kerby has its own figures.
When & how
Take the load to 1381 Redwood Avenue during station hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and keep the material separated so the gate can price it correctly.
Get it ready
Keep recyclable material separate from the trash load, keep mixed loads from being charged as garbage, keep hazardous waste, liquids, paint, asbestos and medical waste out of the vehicle because the station refuses them, and hand unload any tip trailer over five yards.
Southern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle centers page with the Redwood Avenue address and weekend hours in Grants Pass, the per item fees for mattresses, furniture, appliances, appliances with freon and tires, the cubic yard fees for trash, yard waste and roofing, the refused material list, the mixed load rule and the asbestos clearance certificate requirement for construction and demolition materialRecycling in the Grants Pass Area page listing the franchised providers and their depots and transfer stations, the battery locator, the transfer station route for non recyclable material, the twice yearly toxic and hazardous waste events, the yard waste options, the free Oregon E-Cycle item list with the warning that other electronics are not free, and the BottleDrop redemption center

Tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires are priced on the transfer station schedule, with the rim counted at the gate. The Redwood Avenue station in Grants Pass charges one fee per car tire with rim and a higher fee for a truck tire with rim, and there is no curbside tire collection in the city.

City cost & eligibility
$14.8 per car tire with rim dropped at the Southern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle center on Redwood Avenue, where a truck tire with rim is charged at a higher published rate. Resident drop-off with the fee paid at the gate; the Kerby station in the same network publishes higher tire figures and no curbside route exists.
When & how
Take the tires to 1381 Redwood Avenue during station hours and keep them separate from the rest of the load so the gate can price them as tires.
Get it ready
Leave the rims on unless the station says otherwise, because the published rates are for tires with rims, keep tires out of the recycling depots and out of the yard waste, and count them before the trip so the fee is no surprise.
Southern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle centers page with the Redwood Avenue address and weekend hours in Grants Pass, the per item fees for mattresses, furniture, appliances, appliances with freon and tires, the cubic yard fees for trash, yard waste and roofing, the refused material list, the mixed load rule and the asbestos clearance certificate requirement for construction and demolition material

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Special rules apply

Household chemicals are handled at two collection events a year rather than at the curb or the transfer station. The city says toxic and hazardous waste events for residents and businesses are held twice a year, with a calendar sign up, and the transfer stations refuse hazardous waste, liquids and paint outright, while compact fluorescent bulbs can be returned free to a retailer.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes the event programme but no fee schedule for it, and the franchised hauler notes that some items such as fluorescent tubes and non rechargeable batteries are free at those events. Confirm the dates, the accepted material and any charge through the city environmental events calendar before loading a vehicle.
When & how
Sign up for the environmental and recycling events calendar and take the material to one of the twice yearly collection events rather than to a transfer station.
Get it ready
Keep products in their labeled containers and never mix them, keep paint, liquids, medical waste and asbestos out of transfer station loads because those are refused, return compact fluorescent bulbs to a participating retailer for free, and put used motor oil beside the cart in a sealed non breakable container.
Recycling in the Grants Pass Area page listing the franchised providers and their depots and transfer stations, the battery locator, the transfer station route for non recyclable material, the twice yearly toxic and hazardous waste events, the yard waste options, the free Oregon E-Cycle item list with the warning that other electronics are not free, and the BottleDrop redemption centerRepublic Services additional recycling services handout for Grants Pass with the motor and cooking oil rules, the fluorescent bulb options, the glass depot locations, the appliance recycling fees of ten dollars freon free and twenty five dollars with freon at the Josephine County transfer station and the battery drop-off routesSouthern Oregon Sanitation transfer and recycle centers page with the Redwood Avenue address and weekend hours in Grants Pass, the per item fees for mattresses, furniture, appliances, appliances with freon and tires, the cubic yard fees for trash, yard waste and roofing, the refused material list, the mixed load rule and the asbestos clearance certificate requirement for construction and demolition material

Curbside is garbage and recycling only

Grants Pass residents receive weekly garbage collection and recycling from a franchised hauler, with cart sizes and rates set through the Solid Waste Agency. Neither hauler publishes a curbside bulky item service, so anything that will not fit the cart goes to a transfer station rather than onto the curb, and mixed loads at the station are charged as garbage until the stations say otherwise.

How a transfer station load is priced

The Redwood Avenue station applies a minimum charge that covers up to one and a half cubic yards, then charges household trash, yard waste and roofing material by the cubic yard, with compacted material at a higher rate. Single items are different: mattresses and box springs, furniture and appliances each have a printed fee, freight units are priced above standard appliances, and tires are priced by type with the rims counted. Pickup loads start at the small or full size pickup minimum.

What the stations will not take

Both Southern Oregon Sanitation stations refuse asbestos, hazardous waste, infectious waste, liquids, medical waste and radioactive waste, with paint added at Redwood Avenue. Construction and demolition material is refused unless the load comes with an asbestos clearance certification from a certified abatement company stating the material is asbestos free and valid for a year. Recyclable material goes to the free depots instead, and household chemicals wait for the twice yearly collection events.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Grants Pass runs no city collection and no city dump, so self haul means one of the franchised haulers' stations. The closest one is Southern Oregon Sanitation's transfer and recycle center at 1381 Redwood Avenue, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., where the fee schedule prices mattresses and box springs, furniture and appliances per item, freon appliances higher, car and truck tires per tire with rims, and household trash, yard waste and roofing material by the cubic yard above a minimum charge that covers up to one and a half cubic yards. Republic Services sends appliances to the Josephine County Recycle and Transfer Station on Merlin Road, where a freon free unit is charged at one rate and a freon unit at a higher one, and its depot on NW Washington Boulevard takes rechargeable batteries free and car batteries, glass and used motor or cooking oil. Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards and mice are free to drop under Oregon E-Cycles at the Redwood Avenue site, but other electronics are not, so call first. Household chemicals never go to a station: the city announces toxic and hazardous waste collection events twice a year, and compact fluorescent bulbs can go back to a retailer for free.
