The local disposal guide
Galveston collects bulky household material on the same weekly route as the trash cart. Heavy items such as appliances, furniture and large piles of limbs and brush go at the curb or in the alley beside the cart, and the litter truck comes through on the regular collection day, which runs Monday through Thursday depending on the part of the island. Carts and material have to be out by seven in the morning, carts may not go out before five the previous afternoon and come back in by ten that night, and a refrigerator or other unit holding freon has to have the gas removed and tagged by a certified technician and red-tagged before the city will take it. For anything the weekly truck will not carry, residents have the transfer station on Harborside Drive for building materials, roofing and items that will not fit the cart, one trip a month up to a thousand pounds with a hard hat and vest, and the recycle center on 61st Street for recyclables, cooking oil and grease, and tires and oils for residents who show proof of residency. Every April the city adds a citywide cleanup with free bulk pickup by area, free transfer station access and a shred and tire drop-off, and paint, gasoline, kerosene, concrete, freon and tires stay out of the transfer station in every week of the year.

The handoff matters

Carts and materials need to be at the curb no later than 7 AM on the collection day, the cart may go out no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before, and it comes back to its storage space by 10 p.m. on the day of pickup. Freon appliances are the exception that stops the truck: the city requires the freon to be removed and tagged by a certified technician and the appliance to be red-tagged before Sanitation will remove it, so the work has to be arranged first and the tag has to be on the unit when it goes out.
