The local disposal guide
McKinney contracts Frontier Waste Solutions for automated residential collection and runs its own special collections on top of it. Trash, recycling and yard waste come every week on the same collection day, yard waste as a separate load of tied limbs and brown paper bags, and anything too large for the gray cart leaves by appointment through a bulky item collection a household can book up to twelve times a year. Water, sewer, trash and recycling are set up as one package through the water billing department. Household chemicals and electronics do not go to a city drop off, because the city's own facility is not licensed for hazardous waste: both are collected at the curb on a scheduled appointment, in labeled boxes no larger than twenty inches each side, with one television or monitor allowed per pickup. Mattresses, furniture, lawnmowers and exercise equipment are all named as acceptable bulky items, while construction debris, tires, pallets, treated wood and bagged yard waste are restricted.

Household trash and recycling come once a week from the city-issued carts, and yard waste rides the same day on a separate truck as an automatic service with no appointment. Water, sewer and trash are set up together, so the account runs through the water billing department.
Anything too large for the gray cart leaves by appointment, up to twelve collections a year for a household inside the city limits, with the request made before noon on the business day before the collection day. The load is limited by volume, extra trash bags are not part of it, and the restricted items list is firm.
Furniture is named as an acceptable bulky item, including sofas and loveseats, so a couch or a chair leaves on the appointment collection inside the volume limit rather than in the trash cart.

A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is different: proof of freon evacuation has to be provided before the collection date, unless the unit goes straight to the Regional Disposal Facility, which takes it without a certificate.
McKinney has no e-waste drop off. The city collects electronics at the curb on a scheduled appointment, up to twelve pickups a year at no additional charge, with the load in labeled boxes and one television or monitor allowed per pickup.
Household chemicals are collected at the curb by appointment, up to twelve times a year, in labeled boxes that a household prepares to strict limits. The city warns plainly that its own facility is not a licensed household hazardous waste drop off, so nothing is taken there in person.
Yard waste runs automatically every week on the trash collection day on a separate truck, with no appointment, as long as the limbs and bags are prepared the way the city requires.
Construction, demolition and remodeling debris is restricted in the bulky collection, along with treated wood, fence panels and pallets, and the city's list of items residents may deliver to the water district drop offs does not name construction material, so a project load has to be confirmed before it moves.
Home exercise equipment is named on the acceptable bulky item list, so a treadmill or a weight machine leaves on a booked collection inside the volume limit.
Tires are restricted on the bulky collection and refused by the household hazardous waste program, which allows up to two automobile batteries but no tires. No household tire route is published, so the item does not travel on any city collection.
The handoff matters
Trash, recycling and yard waste go out on the same weekly collection day. Carts go to the curb by 7 a.m. and may be set out from 6 p.m. the day before, at least three feet from the other containers and from bulky material, mailboxes, vehicles, meters, poles and fences, with the serial number facing the street and the handle toward the house. Recycling stays loose and clean with the lid closed and cardboard broken down, and an overloaded cart is not collected.
