The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Blacksburg runs refuse and recycling on four weekday quadrants and takes large pieces out twice a year during the spring and fall cleanups, when residents set separated piles of brush, metal appliances, tires and other household junk at the curb. The week is split because brush and yard debris go on one day while metal, tires and bulky items go on another, everything has to be reachable from the public right of way, and airtight doors come off metal appliances before they are collected. Outside those cleanup weeks a special pickup can be booked for a prepaid charge per dump truck load, and construction debris, hazardous waste, paint and oversized tires are refused at the curb and sent to the county waste sites or the regional solid waste authority. Dropcurb hauls residential items from addresses across Blacksburg.

Quadrant curbside collection

Accepted with preparation

Town refuse and recycling run on four quadrants, each with its own weekday, and the town keeps Wednesday and Saturday as the inclement weather and holiday service days. Carts are arranged through the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the town nor the authority publishes a residential monthly rate on the retained pages, and the only published money for the curbside programme is the prepaid special pickup charge, so confirm the service position with Public Works at 540-443-1200 or the waste reduction office at 540-443-1212.
When & how
Southeast on Monday, Northwest on Tuesday, Northeast on Thursday and Southwest on Friday, with the town events calendar carrying any change because service dates occasionally move.
Get it ready
Keep household garbage in the trash cart for the weekly run, check the recycling calendar for the recycling weeks, and order or replace a cart on 540-443-1212 or by email at recycle@blacksburg.gov. Material that will not fit the cart waits for a cleanup week or a scheduled special pickup.
Refuse and Recycling, quadrant schedule and special pickup

Spring and fall cleanup weeks

Accepted with preparation

Large pieces leave Blacksburg in the spring and fall cleanups, curbside collections for debris and brush that are provided to town refuse and recycling customers and are not meant for waste from major construction or demolition. Each quadrant has its own week in each season.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The cleanup weeks are a town service for refuse and recycling customers with no item charge, and brush pickup is free at scheduled times. A special pickup outside the cleanups is a prepaid service instead.
When & how
Spring 2026 runs the week of April 6 for the Southwest, April 13 for the Southeast, April 20 for the Northeast and April 27 for the Northwest, and fall 2026 runs the week of September 28 for the Northeast, October 5 for the Northwest, October 12 for the Southwest and October 19 for the Southeast.
Get it ready
Separate the material into distinct piles: brush no longer than seven feet and no thicker than six inches, with bamboo placed with the other debris rather than the brush; metal appliances with any airtight doors removed; tires off their rims and no larger than 19 inches inside diameter, eight at most per household and none from commercial, racing or farm use; and other debris such as bamboo and miscellaneous household junk. Put everything at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the week, bag leaves during the cleanup window, and keep it all reachable from the public right of way.

Couches and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture rides the cleanup pile, which the town describes as other debris such as miscellaneous household junk. Outside the spring and fall cleanup weeks the same material needs a scheduled special pickup.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture in the cleanup pile carries no item charge for town refuse and recycling customers. A special pickup outside the cleanup windows costs $75 prepaid per dump truck load.
When & how
Out with the quadrant's cleanup week, or on a Friday special pickup if the household books and pays for one outside the cleanup windows.
Get it ready
Put the piece in the other debris pile rather than the brush pile, keep it reachable from the public right of way, and keep it clear of mailboxes, water meters, fire hydrants and posts because anything that could be damaged there will be left. Outside the cleanups the load has to be prepaid and scheduled with Public Works.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

A mattress is not named anywhere on the Blacksburg cleanup, brush or drop-off pages, so it is an unlisted piece rather than a settled one. The cleanup pile does take other debris such as miscellaneous household junk, which is the closest published group.

City cost & eligibility
No mattress is named on the retained pages and no mattress rate is published, so confirm acceptance and the route with Public Works at 540-443-1200, keeping in mind that a special pickup outside the cleanups is a prepaid charge.
When & how
Confirm the item with Public Works before the quadrant's cleanup week, or before booking a special pickup outside it.
Get it ready
Call 540-443-1200, describe the mattress and box spring, and keep them out of the brush pile and out of the trash cart while the answer is pending. If they go out, keep them reachable from the public right of way and clear of meters, hydrants, mailboxes and posts.

Metal appliances

Accepted with preparation

Metal appliances have their own pile in the Blacksburg cleanup, and the published condition is that any airtight doors come off before collection. The regional authority also takes white goods and appliances with a refrigerant charge only.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A metal appliance carries no charge in the cleanup pile for town refuse and recycling customers, and the authority charges a $19.00 refrigerant charge only for white goods and appliances brought to its scale house.
When & how
Out with the quadrant's cleanup week, or taken to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority scale house during its open hours.
Get it ready
Remove the airtight doors before the appliance goes to the curb, keep it in the metal pile rather than the brush or other debris pile, and keep it reachable from the public right of way. A unit taken to the authority instead is weighed or charged at the scale.

Refrigerators and refrigerant appliances

Special rules apply

A refrigerator belongs in the metal appliance pile with its airtight doors removed, and the regional authority prices white goods and appliances as a refrigerant charge only when the unit is brought to the scale house rather than put out at the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no refrigerator rate and the authority publishes a $19.00 refrigerant charge rather than a full price, so confirm the position before moving the unit: Public Works at 540-443-1200 for the cleanup pile, or the authority scale house on (540) 381-2820 for a self-haul.
When & how
Out with the quadrant's cleanup week after the doors are removed, or taken to the authority scale house during its open hours.
Get it ready
Remove the airtight doors before the unit goes to the curb, empty it, and keep it in the metal pile. A unit taken to the authority is charged at the scale for the refrigerant, and an untarped or unsecured load there pays an extra charge.

Televisions and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are not part of the cleanup piles. The town points residents to the YMCA at 1000 North Main Street, where electronics are recycled free of charge, and the regional authority adds electronics to its appointment only hazardous waste event.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The town states that residents may recycle electronics free of charge at the YMCA at 1000 North Main Street, and the regional authority's event is for Montgomery County residents only with appointments required.
When & how
Free drop-off at the YMCA on North Main Street, or at the authority's hazardous waste event on November 7, 2026 by appointment, with appointments opening September 28, 2026.
Get it ready
Erase personal data before handover, keep electronics out of the cleanup piles and the trash cart, and take rechargeable batteries to Home Depot or Lowes, car batteries to an automotive parts store and alkaline batteries to the household trash, which is the split the town publishes. Take electronics to the YMCA Thrift Shop at 1000 N. Main St., which the town lists for free electronics drop-off.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

The cleanup and brush programmes are expressly not intended for waste from major construction or demolition, and pressure treated lumber cannot be collected at all. Project debris goes to the regional authority instead.

City cost & eligibility
From $2.65 for minimum charge for a construction waste load up to 100 pounds, with construction waste at $53.00 per ton under the rates effective July 1, 2026. Loads are weighed at the authority scale house at 555 Authority Drive in Christiansburg, where an untarped or unsecured load pays $10.00 in addition to the per ton charge and the authority now accepts credit and bank cards.
When & how
Not on the cleanup weeks or a special pickup; take the load to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority scale house Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep construction and demolition debris, pressure treated lumber and contractor waste out of the curb piles, tarp or secure the load before weighing because an untarped or unsecured load pays an extra charge, and separate clean woody waste from mixed debris because the authority prices them differently.

Treadmills and exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named on none of the Blacksburg lists. The closest published group is other debris such as miscellaneous household junk in the cleanup pile, so a treadmill is an unlisted piece.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise machine is named on the retained pages and no item rate is published, so confirm acceptance with Public Works at 540-443-1200 before the cleanup week, remembering that a pickup outside the cleanup windows is a prepaid charge.
When & how
Confirm the machine with Public Works before the quadrant's cleanup week, or before booking a special pickup outside it.
Get it ready
Call 540-443-1200 and describe the machine, break it down as far as the maker allows, and keep it out of the brush and metal piles. If it is accepted at the curb, keep it in the other debris pile, reachable from the public right of way and clear of meters, hydrants and posts.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous waste, household and yard chemicals and paint are refused at the Blacksburg curb. The town sends them to household hazardous waste events sponsored by the New River Resource Authority, and the regional authority runs its own appointment only collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The town points residents to the sponsored hazardous waste events rather than publishing a fee, and the regional authority's event is open to Montgomery County residents only with no businesses allowed and appointments required.
When & how
At the sponsoring authority's scheduled events, including the regional authority's collection on November 7, 2026 with appointments opening September 28, 2026.
Get it ready
Keep chemicals, paint and hazardous waste out of every curb pile and out of the trash cart, and dry latex paint in its can with kitty litter or sand before putting the whole can in the household trash. Only small camping propane tanks of 16.4 ounces net weight or less are acceptable anywhere near this stream.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Monday morning of your quadrant's cleanup week

Cleanup items go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your quadrant's scheduled week, and the week is split: brush and yard debris are collected on one day while metal, tires and other bulky items are collected on another. Do not add items after the crew has been through.

Spring and Fall Cleanup

Four separate piles, with the published limits

Brush, metal appliances, tires and other debris are separate piles. Brush is limited to seven feet by six inches, metal appliances go out with airtight doors removed, tires come off their rims at 19 inches or less inside diameter with a maximum of eight per household, and bamboo goes with the other debris rather than with the brush.

Spring and Fall Cleanup

Reachable from the public right of way

Items have to be accessible from the public right of way, because the town does not enter private property, parking lots or driveways to remove them. Anything placed near mailboxes, water meters, fire hydrants or posts that could be damaged will not be collected, and the town is not responsible for damage there.

Self-hauling from Blacksburg has two obvious destinations. Montgomery County's consolidated waste sites take refuse and recycling free from county residents, and the town lists ten of them with addresses and phone numbers, including Coal Bank Hollow on Coal Bank Hollow Road, though hours are not published so a call first is wise. Anything heavier or more specialised goes to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority at 555 Authority Drive in Christiansburg, where the scale house is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., an untarped load pays an extra charge, construction waste and household municipal solid waste are priced by the ton with small load minimums, clean woody waste with no nails costs less than mixed debris, and white goods and appliances carry a refrigerant charge only. Electronics are free at the YMCA on North Main Street, and hazardous waste waits for the sponsored collection events rather than the scale.
