The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Roanoke collects with its own crews and city-owned blue carts, once a week, and bills the service through a solid waste fee that appears on the real estate tax bill twice a year. The cart rules are strict: everything goes inside Big Blue, the can sits within five feet of the street, and loose or bagged trash beside it is left behind. Bulk and brush ride the same weekly route with published limits instead of an appointment, so a couch or a mattress goes out with up to three bulky items a week and branches form a pile no larger than six feet by six feet by six feet with limbs under three inches. What the route will not take is either restricted outright, including construction material, concrete, dirt, lumber and stumps, or routed to the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority, whose permanent household hazardous waste facility at Tinker Creek takes paint, batteries, antifreeze and motor oil from city residents and holds monthly collection events for the rest.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Appliances are not named as bulky items, so a unit has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No Roanoke page names appliances among the bulky examples, and heavy metal is on the restricted list, so call solid waste customer service on 540-853-2000 option 1 and confirm how a refrigerator, freezer, washer or stove should be handled and whether it counts as one of the three weekly bulky items.
When & how
Confirm the unit first, then set it out with the bulky items on the regular collection day if customer service agrees.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer so a child cannot be trapped, and ask about the refrigerant step when the pickup is confirmed, because no page publishes one and heavy metal is restricted at the curb.

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics go to retail and manufacturer programmes the city lists, while local city options are still being developed.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Dell ReConnect with Goodwill Industries recycles used electronics of any brand in any condition free at participating Goodwill locations, and Best Buy stores accept most electronics at customer service counters with in-store kiosks for rechargeable batteries, wires, cords, cables and plastic bags. The city states it is still developing its own local e-cycling options.
When & how
Use one of the retail or manufacturer programmes during their own opening hours, since the city route is still being developed.
Get it ready
Remove personal information before recycling or donating a device, which the city flags as important, and take rechargeable batteries to a participating retailer rather than placing them in the cart.
City computer and electronics recycling page with the Best Buy counter and kiosk acceptance, the Dell ReConnect and Goodwill free programme, the manufacturer take back programmes, the battery recycling options and the note that the city is still developing local e-cycling options alongside the warning to remove personal information

Construction and remodeling debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction material is restricted at the curb and stays with the contractor who generated it.

City cost & eligibility
Construction materials, brick, concrete, dirt, lumber, sheet rock, fencing, stumps, trees, rock and topsoil are all on the city restricted list and none of them may go in the cart or the bulky pile, and no city construction collection or rate is published. A project load goes to a private hauler or the contractor doing the work.
When & how
Arrange the haul before the project starts, because construction material is refused in the weekly collection and in the brush pile.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the blue cart, out of the bulky pile and out of the brush pile, since the brush rules refuse construction materials, fencing, treated lumber and ties, and separate clean material so a hauler can price the load.
City trash and recycling page with the weekly collection, the cart placement and timing rules, the alley exception for bulk and brush, the district collection schedule, the additional cart price, the restricted item list covering construction material, concrete, dirt, lumber, stumps, hazardous material and more, and the every other week recycling dayCity bulk and brush page with the two hand rule for the cart, the curbside branch pile with its one truck load weekly allowance and six by six by six maximum, the three inch limb limit, the refusal of contractor, utility and tree company brush and of ties, treated lumber, fencing, construction material, mixed trash and stumps, the bulky item definition naming furniture and mattresses with the three item weekly limit, and the bagged leaf season exception

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise machines are not named, so the piece is confirmed with solid waste customer service.

City cost & eligibility
No Roanoke page names an exercise machine and no price covers one, so call 540-853-2000 option 1 and confirm whether the machine counts as one of the three weekly bulky items before it goes to the curb.
When & how
Confirm the machine first, then set it out with the bulky items on the regular collection day if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart and take off the loose weights and console, keeping the parts together as one cohesive bulky item within the weekly limit.
City bulk and brush page with the two hand rule for the cart, the curbside branch pile with its one truck load weekly allowance and six by six by six maximum, the three inch limb limit, the refusal of contractor, utility and tree company brush and of ties, treated lumber, fencing, construction material, mixed trash and stumps, the bulky item definition naming furniture and mattresses with the three item weekly limit, and the bagged leaf season exception

Brush, branches and leaves

Accepted with preparation

Brush goes out as a curbside pile with published limits, and leaf bags are taken during the fall season.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Brush and leaf collection are part of the weekly service covered by the annual solid waste fee, with no separate brush charge published and the size and volume limits stated on the bulk page.
When & how
On the regular collection day, with the leaf bag season covering November and December.
Get it ready
Put brush that can be lifted with two hands into the trash can and place larger branches and shrubbery in a pile at the curb, never in an alley, with about one pickup truck load a week, a maximum pile of six feet by six feet by six feet and limbs under three inches in diameter. Brush cut by a contractor, tree company or utility company, railroad ties, landscaping ties, treated lumber, fencing, construction material, mixed trash, oversized piles and stumps are all refused, and during the bagged leaf season only biodegradable paper bags are collected.

Household chemicals, paint and batteries

Accepted with preparation

Paint, batteries, antifreeze and motor oil go to the authority's permanent household hazardous waste facility at Tinker Creek.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The Roanoke Valley Resource Authority runs the permanent household hazardous waste facility for Roanoke City and County, Vinton and Salem residents and no fee is published for residential material, with per visit limits of five gallons each on latex paint, antifreeze and motor oil and no commercial material accepted.
When & how
Drop off at 1020 Hollins Road NE on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. or on a weekday, where the city publishes 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on one page and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on another, so confirm the weekday window on 540-857-5050. A monthly collection event on the third Saturday needs pre-registration.
Get it ready
Keep batteries, paint and motor oil out of the regular trash entirely, because the city states they are hazardous for landfills and unsafe for collection crews. Latex paint is limited to five gallons per visit and used antifreeze and motor oil to the same limit each. Asbestos, infectious or biohazard waste, explosives and ammunition, most gas cylinders other than standard barbecue tanks, radioactive material, prescription drugs and smoke detectors are refused, prescription medicines go to permanent drop boxes at police stations, clinics or pharmacies and must not be flushed, and sharps go into a rigid bottle with the lid taped and the word sharps written on two sides before going into household trash.

Big Blue and the five foot rule

Everything goes inside the city-owned blue cart, which has to sit within five feet of the street, go out after 7 p.m. the night before and before 7 a.m. on collection day, and come back behind the house by 7 a.m. the next day. Loose or bagged trash beside the cart is not collected, and the cart, bin, bulk and brush all stay clear of cars, mailboxes, poles and trees. Where an address has alley collection the cart and bin go in the alley but the bulk and brush piles still go to the curb.

Three bulky items and one brush pile a week

Up to three bulky items go at the curb in front of the residence each week, with furniture and mattresses as the city's own examples, and bagged or boxed trash does not count as bulky outside the November to December leaf bag season. Brush that cannot be lifted into the cart forms a curbside pile, never in an alley, roughly one pickup truck load a week, no larger than six feet by six feet by six feet, with limbs under three inches in diameter.

The hazardous waste gate at Tinker Creek

Batteries, paint and motor oil cannot go in the trash because they are hazardous in landfills and unsafe for collection crews. It is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on weekdays, where the city publishes 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on one page and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on another, so confirm the weekday window on 540-857-5050. City of Roanoke Solid Waste Management with the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority

Monthly household hazardous waste collection event

A city household with hazardous material beyond the paint, batteries, antifreeze and oil the permanent facility takes.

Arrange it
Pre-register through the authority's calendar for the event on the third Saturday of the month, then bring the material to the collection site.

The permanent facility takes only the short accepted list, the events run once a month with pre-registration, and asbestos, infectious waste, explosives, most gas cylinders, radioactive material, prescription drugs and smoke detectors are refused at either route.

Retail and manufacturer electronics recycling

A household with computers, televisions or other electronics and no city collection option yet.

Arrange it

The city says it is still developing its own local e-cycling options, so these retail and manufacturer programmes are the published route rather than a municipal facility.

Before you book

Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How many bulky items can go out each week?

Up to three bulky items a week, placed at the curb in front of the residence on the regular collection day. Bagged or boxed trash does not count as a bulky item outside the November to December leaf season.Official guidance

What counts as a bulky item?

Anything that does not fit in the 96-gallon cart, which the city illustrates with furniture or mattresses. Restricted material such as construction debris, concrete, dirt, lumber, swing sets, tires or hazardous waste cannot be put out as bulk.Official guidance

Will the city take a mattress?

Yes. Mattresses are named alongside furniture as the kind of item that does not fit in the cart, so they go out as bulky items on the weekly collection day.Official guidance

Does a box spring count separately?

Each piece is its own bulky item against the three item weekly limit, so a mattress and box spring together use two of the three allowed that week.Official guidance

Can an appliance go out as bulk?

The bulky definition covers anything that will not fit in the cart and gives furniture and mattresses as the examples, while heavy metal is restricted, so an appliance has to be confirmed with customer service before it is set out.Official guidance

What about a refrigerator or freezer?

Ask when the item is confirmed. No city page publishes a refrigerant step, and the doors should come off before the unit is left anywhere a child could reach it.Official guidance

Where do old computers and televisions go?

The city points residents to Best Buy service counters and kiosks, the Dell ReConnect programme with Goodwill that takes any brand in any condition free, and manufacturer take back programmes, while noting that Roanoke is still developing more local e-cycling options.Official guidance

What should be done before recycling a computer?

Remove all personal information first. The city warns that usernames, passwords, card and bank details, confidential emails, tax returns, medical records and resumes are commonly stored on the device.Official guidance

Who collects the trash in Roanoke?

The city's own solid waste crews collect trash, recycling, bulk, brush and leaves using city-owned blue carts, and the service is funded by an annual solid waste fee on the real estate tax bill rather than a monthly subscription.Official guidance

Which day is my collection?

The city publishes district days: northwest on Mondays, northeast on Tuesdays, southeast on Wednesdays and southwest on Thursdays. Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as trash.Official guidance

How is the solid waste service paid for?

Through an annual fee billed twice a year as a separate charge on the real estate tax bill in the fall and spring: 109 dollars and 20 cents for a single-family house, with higher published rates for multi-home properties and businesses and a 60 dollar discounted rate for homeowners who qualify for the elderly or disabled tax freeze.Official guidance

Are there refunds or penalties?

The fee is not reduced or refunded for weeks when the weekly service is not used, though the city returns if it misses a scheduled pickup by mistake. A late payment carries a ten percent penalty plus ten percent yearly interest.Official guidance

Who do I call with a question?

Solid waste customer service on 540-853-2000 option 1 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by email at SWMcustomerservice@roanokeva.gov, and the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority on 540-857-5050 for hazardous waste questions and registration.Official guidance
