City collection Furniture is named in the city's bulk definition, and carpet appears in the bulk page's own examples of collectible material, so a couch or a room of carpet goes out with the routine curbside bulk service. The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Salem collects for itself. The Sanitation Division runs five semi-automated garbage trucks, two front-loading dumpster trucks, a brush chipper and a knuckle boom crane, and it picks up normal residential brush and bulk items at the street as part of the routine service: appliances, furniture, residential yard waste and other material too large for the totes are all in the bulk definition, and a qualifying pile goes out on a normal collection day. Two lines matter. The service is not for demolition, renovation or remodeling debris, and anything a contractor or a paid worker produced is the contractor's responsibility, as is any job that needed a city building permit. Appliances carry their own conditions, because a unit big enough to trap a child needs its door removed or secured, the unit has to be empty, and anything that can hold compressed gas has to have the gas evacuated. Everything outside the curbside program has a route through the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority, which gives Salem households twelve free drop-offs a calendar year across the Salem and Tinker Creek transfer stations, takes the listed household chemicals at Tinker Creek during normal hours, and runs a wider collection there on the third Saturday of each month by registration.

Weekly tote service and bulk at the street

Accepted with preparation

The Sanitation Division collects residential totes and picks up normal residential brush and bulk items placed at the street as part of the routine service. Bulk material that qualifies and is too large for a tote goes out on a normal collection day or at the earliest scheduled time.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the city residential sanitation service, with no separate curbside charge published for routine brush or bulk. The division asks residents to call with a question about a specific pile, because depending on the quantity or type of debris the household may be required to arrange disposal itself.
When & how
Put the tote at the street by 5:30 in the morning on the scheduled collection day and take it back off the street by 7 the next morning, leaving it beside or behind the principal building between collections. Bulk items and tree trimmings go to the street on the scheduled collection day.
Get it ready
Keep everything out of the vicinity of the tote that you do not want collected, because the division states that anything left there may be thrown away. Keep bulk material at the curb of the property that generated it, or at the normal collection site, and clear of overhead obstructions so the crane and chipper can work.

Routine bulk waste at the curb

Accepted with preparation

Bulk waste is defined as material too large for the normal containers, such as appliances, furniture, residential yard waste and other debris, and the city treats that material as regular or routine residential solid waste rather than as a special service. The bulk page gives its own examples of what is collectible and what is not the city's responsibility.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential sanitation service for a qualifying property. A load beyond what the city treats as routine, including demolition, renovation and remodeling debris, has to be disposed of by the homeowner, who can deliver it to the Salem or Tinker Creek transfer stations under the resource authority's rules.
When & how
Set the qualifying pile at the curb or the normal collection site on the scheduled collection day, and expect the collection on a normal waste collection day or at the earliest scheduled time.
Get it ready
Keep the load routine in size and type. The page's collectible examples are a broken toilet or storm door, a section of busted fencing, a room of dirty carpet, pruned tree branches no longer than six feet, and basement or attic clean-out items that would fit in a pickup truck bed, while the remnants of a remodeled bathroom or kitchen, an entire backyard of broken fencing, a houseful of bad carpet, multiple cut trees and eviction material beyond the pickup truck limit are not the city's responsibility.
Bulk collection policy with the bulk definition, the qualification rules, the appliance conditions, the placement and timing rules, the prohibited material list and the collectible and not responsible examples

Furniture, couches and carpet

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the city's bulk definition, and carpet appears in the bulk page's own examples of collectible material, so a couch or a room of carpet goes out with the routine curbside bulk service.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential sanitation service for a qualifying single-family home, or a multi-family property that uses city sanitation for its normal scheduled collection. A load that is beyond routine, such as a houseful of carpet or an eviction set larger than a pickup truck, is not the city's responsibility.
When & how
Put the piece at the curb of the property that generated it on the scheduled collection day, and keep it clear of overhead obstructions.
Get it ready
Keep the set within the routine size the page describes, which for a clean-out is a load that would fit in a pickup truck bed, and keep furniture out of a demolition or remodeling pile, because permitted work and contractor waste are the contractor's or owner's responsibility.
Bulk collection policy with the bulk definition, the qualification rules, the appliance conditions, the placement and timing rules, the prohibited material list and the collectible and not responsible examples

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are named in the city's bulk definition, with three published conditions: an appliance large enough to trap a child must have its door removed or secured so it cannot close, the unit has to be empty, and anything capable of holding compressed gas must have the gas evacuated before collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential sanitation service as routine bulk waste for a qualifying property, with no separate charge published. A unit that does not meet the door, emptying and gas conditions is not collectible in that state.
When & how
Prepare the unit, then set it at the curb or the normal collection site on the scheduled collection day, clear of overhead obstructions.
Get it ready
Remove or secure the door on any appliance large enough to trap a child so the door cannot close, empty the unit, and have the gas evacuated from anything that can hold compressed gas, all before it goes to the curb. Keep the appliance out of a pile that also contains prohibited material such as fuel cans, gas cylinders or vehicle parts.
Bulk collection policy with the bulk definition, the qualification rules, the appliance conditions, the placement and timing rules, the prohibited material list and the collectible and not responsible examples

Mattresses

Special rules apply

A mattress is not named in the city's bulk definition, its collectible examples or its prohibited list, so the published route is the routine bulk service but the piece itself has to be confirmed with the Sanitation Division.

City cost & eligibility
No mattress rule or mattress fee is published, and routine bulk waste carries no separate charge, so call the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 and ask whether the mattress is collected as routine bulk at the curb or whether the load has to go to a transfer station instead. The division's own page states that a household may be required to arrange disposal depending on the quantity or type of debris.
When & how
Ask first, then put the piece out on the scheduled collection day only if the division confirms that it is collected as routine bulk.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of a pile with prohibited material such as hazardous material, dirt, rock or masonry debris, stumps, gas cylinders, fuel cans, barrels or vehicle parts, because prohibited material must not be set out in a way that signals a need for collection.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Special rules apply

Electronics are not named in the bulk policy, the sanitation page, the recycling page or the hazardous waste page, and the city's three recycling drop-offs take only cardboard, plastics numbered one and two, cans, mixed paper and newspaper, so a screen or a computer has to be confirmed.

City cost & eligibility
No electronics rule and no electronics fee is published, so call the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 and ask whether the unit can go out as routine bulk, or call the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority on 540-857-5050 about the transfer stations and the third Saturday collection events at Tinker Creek, which are free to register for.
When & how
Ask before the unit goes out, then use the route the city or the authority confirms.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the recycling bins, which take cardboard, plastics numbered one and two, bi-metal and aluminum cans, mixed paper and newspaper only and do not take glass. Wipe personal data before the unit leaves the house, and keep any battery or gas cylinder separate because those follow their own routes.

Construction, renovation and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Demolition, renovation and remodeling debris is outside the bulk service, waste from work that needed a city building permit is not collectible, and anything a contractor or a paid worker produced is that person's responsibility. The bulk page also routes building debris to the Building Inspector's Office to determine whether a permit is required.

City cost & eligibility
No city rate exists because the material is not part of the curbside service. The homeowner has to dispose of it and can deliver it to the Salem Transfer Station on Indiana Street or the Tinker Creek Transfer Station at 1020 Hollins Road NE in Roanoke under the resource authority's rules, which the authority explains on 540-857-5050; the city's twelve free drop-offs a calendar year apply to those trips.
When & how
Arrange the disposal before the work starts, because the material cannot go out with the routine bulk collection.
Get it ready
Keep renovation, remodeling and demolition debris separate from routine household bulk, keep it away from the curb, and note that building debris is inspected by the Building Inspector's Office to see whether a building permit is required, which puts permitted work in the contractor's or owner's hands.

Tires

Special rules apply

Tires are not named in the bulk definition, in the collectible examples or in the prohibited list, and the city's recycling drop-offs do not take them, so the piece has to be confirmed with the division or the authority.

City cost & eligibility
No tire rule and no tire fee is published on the city pages, so call the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 for the curbside answer and the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority on 540-857-5050 for what the transfer stations accept, since the authority sets the material and vehicle restrictions.
When & how
Ask before a tire goes to the curb, and keep it out of the recycling drop-offs in the meantime.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the recycling bins and out of a routine bulk pile until the route is confirmed, and ask the authority about any limit on the number of tires or on the vehicle used to deliver them.
Bulk collection policy with the bulk definition, the qualification rules, the appliance conditions, the placement and timing rules, the prohibited material list and the collectible and not responsible examplesRecycling page with the three drop-off centers, the accepted material, the glass exclusion and the plastic bag ruleHousehold hazardous waste page with the resource authority membership, the two transfer stations, the twelve free drop-offs a year, the Tinker Creek chemical drop and the third Saturday registration events

Recycling drop-off centers

Accepted with preparation

The city runs three full-service recycling drop-off centers, one in east Salem, one in the west end and one behind City Hall, and they take cardboard, plastics numbered one and two, bi-metal and aluminum cans, mixed paper and newspaper, with large amounts of corrugated cardboard also accepted at 1271 Indiana Street. The city states that it does not currently accept glass recyclables.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The three drop-off centers are open to residents with no charge published, and the city asks users to keep plastic bags out of the bins entirely. Glass is not accepted at all.
When & how
Use the centers at any time they are open, and take empty plastic bags to a nearby Walmart, Kroger or Food Lion rather than leaving them at the site.
Get it ready
Keep plastic bags out of every bin, because the city states that they tear, slow the conveyor and catch in the separation machinery. Place cardboard, plastics numbered one and two, bi-metal and aluminum cans, mixed paper such as phone books, paperback books, magazines, junk mail and envelopes, and newspaper in the appropriate area.

Household hazardous waste and transfer station drop-offs

Accepted with preparation

Salem joined the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority in 2016, and residents can use the Salem Transfer Station at 1271 Indiana Street and the Tinker Creek Transfer Station at 1020 Hollins Road NE in Roanoke for brush or items that will not fit the tote, with twelve free drop-offs in a calendar year counted across both sites. Latex paint, aerosol cans, lead acid car batteries, used antifreeze and used motor oil are taken at Tinker Creek during normal hours, and a wider range of items is taken there on the third Saturday of each month by registration.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Twelve transfer station drop-offs a calendar year are free to a Salem resident, counted across both the Salem and Tinker Creek sites, and registration for the third Saturday collection events at Tinker Creek is free. The authority applies restrictions on the material types and on the size of the vehicle carrying the load, which it explains on 540-857-5050.
When & how
Take the listed chemicals to Tinker Creek during normal operating hours, and register at least twenty four hours ahead for the third Saturday collection events.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous material out of the routine bulk pile and away from the curb, because hazardous materials, gas cylinders, fuel tanks and fuel cans are all prohibited from bulk collection. Keep the material out of the routine pile and ask the authority which items belong in the normal hours drop and which belong in a registered third Saturday event.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the bulk definition, the collectible examples or the prohibited list, so a treadmill or weight machine is confirmed with the Sanitation Division before it goes to the curb.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise equipment rule or fee is published and routine bulk carries no separate charge, so call the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 and describe the machine, since the division states that a household may be required to arrange disposal depending on the quantity or type of debris.
When & how
Confirm the machine, then put it out on the scheduled collection day only if the division accepts it as routine bulk.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, keep it clear of overhead obstructions at the collection point, and keep it away from prohibited items such as gas cylinders, fuel cans, vehicle parts and hazardous material.

For a routine bulk pile

Set the pile at the curb of the property that generated it, or at the normal collection site, clear of overhead obstructions, on the scheduled collection day. Appliances need the door removed or secured, the unit emptied and any gas evacuated; the collectible examples on the city page are a broken toilet or storm door, a section of fencing, a room of carpet, branches no longer than six feet and clean-out items that would fit in a pickup truck bed.

What counts as Salem bulk waste?

Material too large for the normal totes or dumpsters, such as appliances, furniture, residential yard waste and other debris, which the city treats as regular or routine residential solid waste. The page's own examples are a broken toilet or storm door, a section of busted fencing, a room of dirty carpet, pruned tree branches no longer than six feet, and basement or attic clean-out items that would fit in a pickup truck bed. Demolition, renovation and remodeling debris is outside the service.Official guidance

Will Salem take a couch at the curb?

Yes, as routine bulk waste. Furniture is named in the city's own bulk definition and carpet is one of the page's collectible examples, so the piece goes to the curb of the property that generated it on the scheduled collection day, clear of overhead obstructions. Keep the load within the routine size the page describes, because a houseful of carpet or an eviction set larger than a pickup truck is not the city's responsibility.Official guidance

How do I put a refrigerator or stove out in Salem?

Appliances are routine bulk waste, so the unit goes to the curb on the scheduled collection day once it meets the city's three conditions: the door is removed or secured so it cannot close if the unit is large enough to trap a child, the unit is empty, and any gas it can hold has been evacuated. Keep it clear of overhead obstructions and out of a pile with prohibited material such as gas cylinders, fuel cans or vehicle parts.Official guidance

How do I get rid of a mattress in Salem?

Confirm it with the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 first, because a mattress is not named in the city's bulk definition, its collectible examples or its prohibited list. Furniture and other large debris are routine bulk waste, so the mattress may qualify as routine bulk at the curb, but the division states that a household may be required to arrange disposal depending on the quantity or type of debris, and the transfer stations take items that will not fit the tote.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Salem?

Confirm the route first, because the city publishes no electronics rule and the three recycling drop-offs take only cardboard, plastics numbered one and two, cans, mixed paper and newspaper. Call the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 about routine bulk collection, or call the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority on 540-857-5050 about what the Salem and Tinker Creek transfer stations accept and what the third Saturday collection events at Tinker Creek take.Official guidance

What does Salem charge for trash and bulk pickup?

Routine residential collection, brush and bulk waste are part of the city sanitation service and no separate curbside charge is published, so a qualifying pile costs nothing beyond the service the household already has. The transfer stations are free for a Salem household for a total of twelve drop-offs a calendar year across the Salem and Tinker Creek sites, the listed household chemicals are taken without a published charge during normal hours, and registering for a third Saturday collection event at Tinker Creek is free. Any amount beyond that structure is confirmed with the Sanitation Division on 540-375-3071 or the authority on 540-857-5050.Official guidance

What will Salem not take at the curb?

Demolition, renovation and remodeling debris, waste from work that needed a building permit, waste generated by a contractor or anyone paid to do a job, land clearing debris on unimproved residential property, dirt, rock and masonry debris, stumps, hazardous materials, gas cylinders, fuel tanks, fuel cans, barrels, items too large to be handled safely, items used in an industrial or commercial process and vehicle parts. The city also states that prohibited material must not be set out in a way that signals a need for collection.Official guidance

Who runs sanitation in Salem?

The Sanitation Division inside Street and General Maintenance, which operates the city's own trucks and chipper and picks up routine brush and bulky items at the street. The division is at 1228 Indiana Street and answers on 540-375-3071, with working hours from 6 in the morning to 2:30 in the afternoon and phone hours from 7 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon, while Street and General Maintenance answers recycling questions on 540-375-3039. Everything outside the curbside program runs through the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority on 540-857-5050.Official guidance

Where can I recycle in Salem?

At one of the city's three full-service drop-off centers: 1271 Indiana Street in east Salem across from Street and General Maintenance near the dog park, the west end of the Walmart parking lot on West Main Street, and 114 N Broad Street in the parking lot behind City Hall near Roanoke College. They take cardboard, plastics numbered one and two, bi-metal and aluminum cans, mixed paper and newspaper, with large amounts of corrugated cardboard also accepted on Indiana Street, and the city states that glass is not currently accepted. Plastic bags have to stay out of the bins.Official guidance
