The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Christiansburg runs its own curbside service and adds two windows a year for the things a cart cannot take. Garbage is collected weekly and recycling every other week for a monthly charge billed with water and sewer, residents receive one green garbage cart and one blue recycling cart, everything goes out by 8 a.m., and nothing outside the carts is collected. Old furniture, appliances and tires are handled in the Spring and Fall Cleanup windows, held in April and October, when the town picks up tree and brush trimmings, furniture, a maximum of two appliances and up to four tires per household at no charge. Outside those windows the same categories can be scheduled for a special pickup for a published charge per truckload plus a landfill tipping fee, or hauled directly to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority on Authority Drive, where tipping fees apply. Brush has its own monthly curbside collection with strict size and stacking rules, and household hazardous waste never goes in a cart: the town sends residents to the New River Resource Authority's collection events.

Televisions and monitors

Special rules apply

The town's cleanup FAQ refuses electronic components such as televisions and computers in the Spring and Fall Cleanup pile and sends a set to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority, so the route comes from that authority or from Public Works.

City cost & eligibility
The town's cleanup FAQ names electronic components such as televisions and computers among the items it will not pick up and answers its electronic waste question by pointing to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority on 540-381-2820, and no electronics charge is published anywhere, so confirm the route with that authority or with Public Works on 540-382-1151 before the set leaves the house.
When & how
Keep the set out of the cleanup pile, because the town refuses electronic components there, and call the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority on 540-381-2820 or Public Works on 540-382-1151 for the current route.
Get it ready
Keep the set whole and dry, erase anything stored on it, keep electronics out of the garbage and recycling carts, and do not put a television in a cleanup pile unless the town confirms it there.

Computers and small electronics

Special rules apply

The town's cleanup FAQ refuses electronic components and sends them to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority, so a computer or small device is confirmed with that authority before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no electronics price and refuses electronic components in the cleanup pile, pointing residents to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority on 540-381-2820, so confirm the device with that authority or with Public Works on 540-382-1151 before it goes out.
When & how
Call Public Works first and follow the route it gives you, whether that is a cleanup window, a scheduled special pickup or a trip to a regional facility.
Get it ready

Construction and building material

Not on the regular city route

Construction and building material is refused in brush collection and is not on the cleanup or special pickup list.

City cost & eligibility
The brush page states plainly that construction and building materials are not accepted, including lumber, fence posts, railroad ties and brick, and neither the cleanup list nor the special pickup list includes them, so confirm the load with Public Works on 540-382-1151 before hauling it.
When & how
Call Public Works before the work starts and ask how a project load should be handled, since the town's own lists exclude it and the regional authority charges tipping fees at its gate.
Get it ready
Keep construction and building material out of the brush pile, the garbage cart and the recycling cart, and separate any brush or furniture that does qualify for a cleanup pickup from the project debris.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the town's pickup lists, so the machine has to be confirmed before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The cleanup list and the special pickup list name tree and brush trimmings, old furniture, appliances and tires but no exercise machine, so confirm the item with Public Works on 540-382-1151.
When & how
Call 540-382-1151, and if the machine is accepted put it out during a cleanup window or book the special pickup the town offers.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

Hazardous household products never go in a cart and are collected at the New River Resource Authority's household hazardous waste events.

City cost & eligibility
The town names the New River Resource Authority events without publishing dates, an accepted list or a price, so confirm the next collection and the accepted material with the authority before the trip.
When & how
Watch for the New River Resource Authority's household hazardous waste collection events and check the authority's website for dates, and keep the material out of every curbside cart until then.
Get it ready
Keep products in their labelled containers, never mix them, keep them out of the garbage and recycling carts and out of any cleanup pile, and check the label words the town lists, such as poison, danger, warning or caution, to tell hazardous products apart.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Carts only, and out by 8 a.m.

Garbage is collected weekly and recycling every other week from the town supplied carts: one green garbage cart in 96 or 48 gallon sizes and one blue recycling cart in 96 or 65 gallon sizes. Everything goes out by 8 a.m. on the collection day, material may not exceed the contents of the carts, and anything placed outside a cart, including extra garbage or recycling, is not picked up. Carts should come back in by the end of the collection day, and hazardous household waste never goes in a cart.

Cleanup piles have their own placement rules

During the Spring and Fall Cleanup windows residents put items outside at any time and crews come by over the following weeks. Items must sit within ten feet of the street pavement in piles separate from normal trash, brush has to be separated from the other material, and loose material goes in containers no larger than 32 gallons. During cleanup the town picks up tree and brush trimmings, old furniture, a maximum of two appliances and up to four tires per household, and the town asks residents to move personal property they do not intend to have hauled away back from the street.

Brush has its own monthly collection and size limits

Brush collection runs once a month starting on the first Monday, with the north quadrant collected in the first week and the south quadrant in the second, and piles must be out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week and no earlier than the Saturday before. Brush must be tree limbs or logs cut to six feet or less, stacked neatly perpendicular to the street with the larger ends facing the street, free of nails, screws and wire, within five feet of a town maintained street, and no more than one pile per month of ten feet long by five feet tall. Leaves, weeds, vines, yard waste, stumps root balls, dirt, rocks, logs over ten inches and all construction or building material are refused, and the service pauses in April and October for cleanup.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Christiansburg residents can self haul two ways. The town's cleanup windows in April and October take tree and brush trimmings, old furniture, a maximum of two appliances and up to four tires per household at no charge, and outside those windows the same categories can be scheduled for a special pickup on 540-382-1151 for a published charge per truckload plus a landfill tipping fee. The town charges a monthly fee for curbside garbage and recycling, billed with the resident's water and sewer service, and registered households receive one green garbage cart and one blue recycling cart. Curbside brush collection is complimentary to all town residential properties, including households that do not subscribe to garbage collection, and the furniture, appliance and tire pickups are free inside the April and October cleanup windows but charged outside them.Official guidance

When is Spring and Fall Cleanup?

The cleanups run during April and October, and the 2026 fall cleanup is scheduled from September 28 to October 9. Residents place items outside at any time during the window and crews come by over the following weeks, with no charge for what they collect. Items sit within ten feet of the street pavement in piles separate from normal trash, brush is separated from the rest, loose material goes in containers no larger than 32 gallons, and anything set out after the window is charged.Official guidance

What if I cannot wait for the cleanup?

Call Public Works on 540-382-1151 to schedule a special pickup of tree and brush trimmings, old furniture, appliances or tires. The service runs year round and is charged per truckload plus an additional landfill tipping fee, billed separately from the water utility bill. The other options are hauling the material directly to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority at 555 Authority Drive, where tipping fees apply, or holding it until the next cleanup window.Official guidance

How does brush collection work?

Brush is collected once a month beginning on the first Monday, with the north quadrant in the first week and the south quadrant in the second, and piles go out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week and no earlier than the Saturday before. Brush is limited to tree limbs and logs cut to six feet or less, stacked neatly perpendicular to the street with the larger ends facing the street, free of nails and wire, within five feet of a town maintained street, and no more than one pile of ten feet long by five feet tall per month. Leaves, weeds, vines, yard waste, stumps, dirt, rocks, logs over ten inches and all construction material are refused, and the service pauses in April and October.Official guidance
