The local disposal guide
Hawthorne runs its collection through a franchise agreement with Republic Services, and every home gets three carts that each take a defined stream: green for yard waste, blue for recyclables and brown for everything else. The big items move on a scheduled bulky program with a generous free allowance of four special pickups a year at 64 cubic feet each, or up to twenty items a year in groups of five, and the City is strict about when they may go out, because depositing bulky waste on a street or sidewalk is a misdemeanor under the ordinance amended in 2025. Electronics ride free on top of the recycling cart or on the bulky allowance, batteries go in a bag on the same cart, and household hazardous waste drops at the county site in Playa del Rey on weekends.

Appliances, including refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, water heaters and dishwashers, are named in the city code as bulky waste and go out on a scheduled special pickup.
Electronic waste is collected free by laying it on top of the recycling cart, or beside the cart when it is too large, and it also counts within the bulky allowance.
Only small pieces of wood fit in the brown cart and scrap wood within the bulky definition, so larger construction and demolition material needs its own arrangement.
Exercise equipment is not named in the cart rules or the bulky definition, and any item two workers cannot handle is refused, so the machine is confirmed with the hauler first.
The handoff matters
Trash bins may not be placed at the pickup location before twelve hours ahead of the scheduled pickup time and have to be removed within twelve hours after it. For almost all residents the collection day matches the street sweeping day.
