The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

San Ramon handles large household items on scheduled neighborhood clean-up days rather than on request. ACI of San Ramon has been the city's franchised hauler for garbage, recyclables and organics since October 2019, and every single-family address gets three clean-up days a year, listed by address on the hauler's schedule. Each set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material, up to four car or light truck tires without rims, and two large bulky items such as appliances, mattresses and furniture, with no single item over 200 pounds; clean undamaged items set apart and labelled for reuse are diverted to a donation facility instead of the landfill. Material beyond the volume limit is charged by the cubic yard, and an extra clean-up outside the scheduled days is a separate paid service. Household hazardous waste never goes in a cart or a clean-up pile: San Ramon residents can book a free door-to-door collection through the city's partnership with Clean Harbors, or drive to the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District facility in Martinez, which is free to San Ramon households with no appointment. Construction and demolition debris is refused in the clean-up program, so a renovation uses the hauler's debris box service.

A couch goes out on a neighborhood clean-up day, which every single-family address gets three times a year. A set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material plus two large bulky items such as appliances, mattresses and furniture.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Three neighborhood clean-up days a year are included for every single-family residential customer at no additional charge, and clean reusable items set apart are diverted to a sorting or donation facility. Get it ready
Remove or seal the doors on a refrigerator, freezer or other appliance before it goes out, and empty the unit. Keep hazardous waste out of the pile, and take paint, chemicals and batteries through the household hazardous waste programs instead.

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions and other electronics count as bulky items on a clean-up day, and San Ramon also runs household hazardous waste routes for e-waste, including a free door-to-door collection service.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Up to two large bulky or electronic items of 60 to 200 pounds each are collected per set out at no additional charge on a scheduled clean-up day; the city's door-to-door household hazardous waste collection and the sanitary district facility in Martinez are free to San Ramon residents.
When & how
Put the screen out on the address's clean-up day by 5:30 a.m., book a door-to-door hazardous waste appointment at 1-800-433-5060, or take it to the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District facility at 4797 Imhoff Place in Martinez, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from a computer before it leaves the house, keep electronics out of every cart, and note that household batteries go in a zipper-lock bag on top of the recycling cart with the 9-volt terminals taped, while automotive and liquid lithium ion batteries are not collected that way.

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

Dirt, rock and construction or demolition debris, including pallets, are refused in the clean-up and bulky programs, so a project uses the hauler's debris box service instead.

City cost & eligibility
The debris box schedule the hauler publishes is labelled for commercial service, with per pull rates starting at $1,024.50 for a seven cubic yard solid waste box, a one ton minimum on every box and a $153.75 trip charge, so confirm the residential rate, the box size and the accepted material with the hauler before ordering.
When & how
Order the debris box through ACI of San Ramon at 925-380-9480 before the project generates the debris, because nothing from a project goes into a clean-up pile.
Get it ready
Keep construction and demolition debris and pallets out of the clean-up pile and confirm what the box may hold before it is filled, because hazardous waste, liquids, treated wood and other restricted material still need their own route.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the clean-up program's item lists, and a treadmill or weight machine can exceed the 200 pound per item limit, so the machine has to be confirmed with the hauler before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
A bulky item is collected at no additional charge on a scheduled clean-up day if it fits the two item and 60 to 200 pound limits, so confirm whether the machine qualifies and what an extra clean-up outside the scheduled days would cost.
When & how
Call ACI of San Ramon at 925-380-9480 and describe the machine before the clean-up day.
Get it ready
Give the weight and size when you call, and take the console or any battery pack off so the electronics can be routed to the household hazardous waste programs instead of the pile.

Bulky items and household clutter

Accepted with preparation

San Ramon collects large items on neighborhood clean-up days rather than by appointment. Every single-family address gets three scheduled days a year, and each set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material plus two large bulky items.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Three clean-up days a year are included for single-family residential customers at no additional charge. Volume beyond 3 cubic yards is charged at $81.98 per cubic yard, and an extra clean-up outside the scheduled days is $307.57.

Get it ready
Contain loose and small items in bags, boxes or bundles, keep the pile within 3 feet of the curb without blocking the street or the sidewalk, and separate clean reusable items and label them REUSE. Dirt, rock, construction debris and pallets, items over 200 pounds, abandoned vehicles and hazardous waste are refused.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

The bulky program runs on scheduled clean-up days, not on request

San Ramon does not book bulky pickups on demand. Every single-family address gets three neighborhood clean-up days a year, listed by address on the hauler's schedule, and each set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material plus two large bulky items such as appliances, mattresses and furniture, with four car or light truck tires allowed if the rims are separated. Items go within 3 feet of the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours in advance, and two different vehicles collect what is put out. Volume beyond the limit and an extra clean-up outside the scheduled days are both charged separately.

Carts out by 5:30 a.m. with room to be emptied

Carts go to the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the weekly collection day, facing the street with the wheels against the curb and two to three feet of space between them, clear of parked cars, fire hydrants and low branches, and they come back out of public view after they are emptied. Overloading a cart is what causes litter and critter problems, so material is not wedged or compacted into it. Household batteries go in a zipper-lock bag on top of the recycling cart with the 9-volt terminals taped, and automotive or liquid lithium ion batteries are not collected that way.

Hazardous waste has its own two routes

Hazardous items never go in an ACI container or a clean-up pile. San Ramon residents can book a free door-to-door collection with Clean Harbors at 1-800-433-5060, which sends a containment kit and takes one type of material per bag, sealed and ready by 6 a.m. on the appointment day, with no container larger than five gallons. The other route is the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District facility at 4797 Imhoff Place in Martinez, free to San Ramon residents with no appointment and open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., where a visit is limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds in containers no larger than five gallons. Leftover paint can also go back to many retailers through PaintCare.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in San Ramon splits into three cases. A household with furniture, appliances, a mattress, a television or tires goes through the neighborhood clean-up program instead of a transfer station: every single-family address gets three clean-up days a year, each set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material, up to four car or light truck tires with the rims separated and two large bulky items between 60 and 200 pounds, and the items go within 3 feet of the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled day. A household with paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries, bulbs, televisions, computers, medications or sharps uses the household hazardous waste routes: a free door-to-door collection booked with Clean Harbors at 1-800-433-5060, or the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District facility at 4797 Imhoff Place in Martinez, which is free to San Ramon residents with no appointment, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and limits a visit to 15 gallons or 125 pounds in containers no larger than five gallons. Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How is a couch collected in San Ramon?

On a neighborhood clean-up day. Every single-family address gets three clean-up days a year, and each set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material plus two large bulky items such as appliances, mattresses and furniture, with no single item over 200 pounds. Put the couch within 3 feet of the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours early, and label anything reusable so it is diverted to a donation facility.Official guidance

Where does a mattress go in San Ramon?

Two routes. A mattress is named in the large bulky item program, so it can go out on a neighborhood clean-up day as one of the two bulky items allowed in a set out, and it can also be dropped free at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 2080 Diamond Boulevard in Concord, which is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and takes up to five units without an appointment for county residents.Official guidance

Can a refrigerator go out on a San Ramon clean-up day?

Yes, as one of the two large bulky items a clean-up set out allows, provided the unit is between 60 and 200 pounds. The hauler asks that the doors be removed or sealed before the appliance is set out, and the items go within 3 feet of the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled clean-up day. Hazardous waste cannot ride along with it and has its own collection programs.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in San Ramon?

Three published routes. A television or computer counts as one of the two large bulky items allowed on a neighborhood clean-up day, the city's door-to-door household hazardous waste service collects electronic waste by appointment at 1-800-433-5060, and the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District facility at 4797 Imhoff Place in Martinez takes e-waste free from San Ramon residents with no appointment, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.Official guidance

How does the San Ramon bulky program work?

By schedule rather than by appointment. Every single-family address gets three neighborhood clean-up days a year, and each set out takes up to 3 cubic yards of material, up to four car or light truck tires without rims, and two large bulky items such as appliances, mattresses and furniture, with no single item over 200 pounds. Put items within 3 feet of the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours early, and label reusable items REUSE so they are donated rather than landfilled.Official guidance

Who collects trash and bulky items in San Ramon?

ACI of San Ramon is the franchised hauler for garbage, recyclables and organics and has run the city service since October 1, 2019. Cart service is billed quarterly by cart size, and bulky items are collected on the three neighborhood clean-up days each single-family address is scheduled for rather than by appointment. The hauler answers at 925-380-9480.Official guidance

How do I find my San Ramon clean-up day?

San Ramon schedules three neighborhood clean-up days a year by address rather than taking bulky appointments. The dates are listed by address on the hauler's clean-up schedule, or a resident can call 925-380-9480. Items go within 3 feet of the curb by 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours in advance, with up to 3 cubic yards of material and two large bulky items.Official guidance

Where do paint, batteries and televisions go in San Ramon?

Hazardous items never go in a cart or a clean-up pile. Two free routes exist for residents: a door-to-door collection booked with Clean Harbors at 1-800-433-5060, which sends a containment kit and takes one sealed bag from the property with no container larger than five gallons, and the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District facility at 4797 Imhoff Place in Martinez, which needs no appointment and is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries, bulbs, e-waste and sharps are among the accepted materials, a visit is limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds, and leftover paint can also go back to retailers through PaintCare.Official guidance

What will the San Ramon clean-up program not take?

Dirt, rock and construction or demolition debris including pallets, abandoned automobiles, any single item over 200 pounds, and hazardous waste of any kind. Construction material uses the hauler's debris box service instead, and hazardous waste goes through the door-to-door collection or the district facility in Martinez. Loose and small items also have to be bagged, boxed or bundled before they go out.Official guidance
