The local disposal guide
Joliet contracts its garbage, recycling and yard waste to Waste Management, and the good news is that bulky items ride the regular weekly pickup rather than needing a separate appointment. The hauler's own program flyer names couches, small tables, mattresses and chairs as bulk items, requires furniture and mattresses to be dry with a cover over them when rain or snow is coming, and takes large household appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers on the same weekly day, collected separately and recycled. Hazardous waste, electronics and hard to recycle items do not go at the curb at all: they move through the At Your Door special collection, which the flyer lists item by item. Construction material is the one stream with limits rather than a prohibition, because incidental home improvement debris is collected inside strict can and bundle limits while large quantities, pallets, dirt, stone, concrete and fencing are restricted and need a container or a special collection.

The handoff matters
Every cart, including yard waste, has to be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the collection day, with the handle facing away from the roadway and at least three feet between carts. Carts may go out the night before but must not be placed on the street, should be stored in a garage or a back or side yard location between collections, and have to come in no later than the evening of the collection day. Recyclables go loose rather than bagged, and shredded paper goes in a paper bag first.

Bulk items are collected with the regular weekly pickup rather than by appointment, and the flyer names couches, small tables, mattresses and chairs. Mattresses are named among the bulk items collected with the regular weekly pickup, in the same list as couches, chairs and small tables. The flyer requires furniture and mattresses to be dry and asks residents to cover them in case of rain or snow, so keep the mattress covered until collection and set it out with the weekly pickup by 7 a.m.Official guidance

Through the Waste Management At Your Door special collection rather than the curb, because the city states that these items will not be collected if they are left out with the regular garbage. The flyer lists televisions, desktop computers, laptops, tablets, monitors, printers, scanners, microwaves and related cords among the accepted electronics, and the city gives three ways to arrange a home collection: wmatyourdoor.com, the phone (800) 449-7587 available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST Monday to Friday, or the email ATYOURDOOR@WM.COM.Official guidance
Garbage, recycling, yard waste, bulk items and large household appliances are all part of the weekly residential service, and the flyer publishes no per item price for any of them, though it does publish a monthly rate for an extra 96 gallon waste cart. Renting a 10, 15, 20 or 30 cubic yard container is a quote from the hauler, and the Bagster route is published with an approximate pickup charge the city says is subject to change, with one free Bagster per household available at City Hall while supplies last. The At Your Door special collection for hazardous waste and electronics is a separate program with no residential price published in these sources. Dropcurb prices its own pickup separately and shows the total at checkout.Official guidance
Waste Management holds the residential contract and can be reached at 815-280-7854, Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays, or through the live chat on its Joliet page.
