The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Muncie collects through its Sanitary District, and the district runs five curbside streams every week: trash, recycling, bulk items, tree limbs and white goods such as appliances. The daily mechanics matter more than an appointment here. Everything has to be inside a district toter with the lid closed, toters go to the curb by 7 a.m. and come back by 7 p.m. the same day, and a bag or box left on the ground is not collected at all. Bulk items do not need a phone call either, because a secondary truck follows the regular trash route on the same day, and tree limbs, brush and leaves ride in a third collection that keeps the organic material out of the landfill. The district also grants every residence an annual allowance at East Central Recycling for household trash, tires, hazardous waste and electronics, and that same site takes construction material with a charge.

Weekly curbside trash in district toters

Accepted with preparation

Every district customer receives weekly curbside trash collection, and all household waste has to be bagged inside a district toter with the lid closed.

City cost & eligibility
The district publishes its service list and billing process but no residential rate on the pages retrieved, so confirm the current charge on the sanitation line at 765-747-4865 or through utility billing rather than assuming a figure.
When & how
Once a week on the household's trash day, with pickup running every day of the year except Christmas. Toters go to the curb by 7 a.m. and return to the property by 7 p.m. the same day.
Get it ready
Bag all household waste and fasten it securely inside the toter with the lid closed, because bags and boxes on the ground are not collected at all. Keep each toter two feet clear of poles, mailboxes, cars and fencing, and space multiple toters two feet apart with the lid arrows facing the street. Dangerous and banned material stays out entirely, including motor oil, paint and other hazardous waste, needles, construction material, large quantities of animal waste, human waste and dead animals.

Weekly bulk item collection

Accepted with preparation

Bulk items go to the curb with the regular collection and are picked up by a secondary truck on the same trash day, with no appointment required.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Muncie Sanitary District customers, who receive bulk item collection as one of the weekly curbside services along with trash, recycling, tree limb and white good collection, on the regular trash day with no separate fee published for the pickup.
When & how
Every week on the regular trash day, collected by a secondary truck behind the usual route. Nothing has to be scheduled, so the item only has to be at the curb and accessible.
Get it ready
Place furniture, tree limbs and appliances at the curb and separate the tree limbs, brush and leaves from the other large items, because a separate truck collects the organic material for composting and mulching. Keep the pile clear of mailboxes, poles, fences and overhead power lines, and remember that bags and boxes on the ground are not collected on their own.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Bedding is not named in the district bulk, white good or toter lists, so the piece is confirmed before it goes to the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The district publishes no rate for bedding and does not name mattresses among the bulk items it lists, so call the sanitation department on 765-747-4865 and confirm whether the piece rides the weekly bulk collection or needs another route.
When & how
If the district confirms the piece, it goes out with the bulk items on the regular trash day and is picked up by the secondary truck.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and wrapped so the crew can lift it, and set it out with the bulk pile rather than on its own. Ask when you call whether a box spring or a bed frame counts as part of the same item, and keep the pile clear of poles, mailboxes and fences.
Internet Archive capture of the trash pickup guidelines with the toter rules, the bulk item and tree limb collection, the contractor exclusion, the annual 2,000 pound allowance and the toter material lists

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

White goods such as appliances are a named weekly curbside service and appliances are also named in the bulk collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Muncie Sanitary District customers, who receive white good appliance collection as one of the weekly curbside services along with trash, recycling, bulk item and tree limb collection, with no separate fee published for the pickup.
When & how
Every week with the curbside services on the regular trash day, and appliances are also listed among the bulk items that the secondary truck collects.
Get it ready
Empty the unit before it goes out and place it with the bulk items at the curb rather than inside a toter, since appliances will not fit and the toters are limited to bagged household waste and small quantities of bagged yard waste. Keep the appliance clear of poles, mailboxes and fences so the collection crew can reach it.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronic goods are part of the yearly allowance every district customer has at East Central Recycling, and the district also runs a free household hazardous waste program.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Muncie Sanitary District customers, who each year may haul and dump up to 2,000 pounds of household trash, six car tires, hazardous household waste and electronic goods at East Central Recycling at no extra charge, and Delaware County residents whose household hazardous waste was generated at the residence may use the district program free of charge.
When & how
Take the material to East Central Recycling at 701 East Centennial Avenue during its regular business hours, using the yearly allowance rather than the curbside route, and call 765-282-1900 with a question about charges or programs.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the toters, because the district limits toters to bagged household waste, small quantities of bagged yard waste and broken down cardboard. Broken down cardboard boxes can be dropped in the recycling site roll off dumpster, and needles, hazardous material, construction material, animal waste and dead animals are all excluded from the curbside service.

Construction and remodeling material

Not on the regular city route

Construction material is refused in the toters but accepted at East Central Recycling with a charge, so a project load goes there or to a hauler.

City cost & eligibility
The district states that East Central Recycling accepts construction materials with a charge but does not publish the amount, so confirm the price and the material on 765-282-1900 before the load is hauled. Construction material is refused in the toters either way.
When & how
By delivery to East Central Recycling during business hours or through a private hauler, rather than on the curbside collection day.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the toters and off the curbside bulk pile, because the district lists construction material among the items that may not go in a toter. Broken down cardboard from a project can still go to the recycling site roll off dumpster, and anything a contractor generates is the contractor's responsibility to remove.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named nowhere in the district material, so the machine is confirmed with the sanitation department first.

City cost & eligibility
The district publishes no rate for an item it does not name, so call the sanitation department on 765-747-4865 and confirm whether the machine rides the weekly bulk collection with furniture and appliances or needs another arrangement.
When & how
If it is accepted the machine goes out with the bulk items on the regular trash day and is collected by the secondary truck.
Get it ready
Describe the machine when you call, break down what folds or comes apart, and keep the pieces in one pile rather than setting them out across several weeks. Keep the pile clear of overhead power lines, poles, mailboxes and fencing, since the district requires bulk items to be unobstructed.
Internet Archive capture of the trash pickup guidelines with the toter rules, the bulk item and tree limb collection, the contractor exclusion, the annual 2,000 pound allowance and the toter material lists

Tree limbs, brush and leaves

Accepted with preparation

Tree limb collection is a weekly curbside service, with the organic material separated from other bulk items and a bagged leaf season each fall.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Muncie Sanitary District customers, who receive tree limb collection as one of the weekly curbside services along with trash, recycling, bulk item and white good collection, and whose bagged leaves are collected during the annual leaf season announced by the district. Small quantities of bagged yard waste may also go in a toter.
When & how
Every week on the regular trash day for limbs and brush, with sections of trees no longer than eight feet and no more than six inches in diameter stacked neatly at the curb. Leaves are collected on the curb during the leaf season each year, which the district announces by website, social media and press release, and the Christmas season collection runs from about December 20 to January 5.
Get it ready
Separate tree limbs, brush and leaves from the other large items so the separate organic truck can compost and mulch them, and keep the pile clear of mailboxes, poles, fences and overhead power lines. Bag and secure leaves for the leaf season, and never put them in blue recycling bags, because they will not be collected that way. Trees that a contractor topped, pruned or felled are the customer's responsibility rather than the district's.

Paint, chemicals and hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous material never goes in a toter and instead uses the free Delaware County resident program at East Central Recycling.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Delaware County residents, as long as the household hazardous waste was generated at the residence, with the service free and unavailable to commercial, industrial or agricultural businesses. The district runs the program with the cooperation of East Central Recycling, and the yearly drop off allowance also covers hazardous household waste.
When & how
Drop off at East Central Recycling at 701 East Centennial Avenue during business hours, using either the free resident program or the yearly allowance, and call 765-282-1900 with a question about charges or accepted material.
Get it ready
Keep paint, motor oil and other hazardous waste, needles and landfill banned material out of the toters entirely, because the district excludes them and warns that improper disposal can injure collection workers and contaminate systems. Automotive batteries, oil and antifreeze can often go back to a parts store or service station, and used sharps need the district's published guidance rather than the trash.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Everything goes in a toter, nothing on the ground

The district collects only what is inside a district toter with the lid closed, so bagged household waste, small quantities of bagged yard waste and broken down cardboard belong there and a bag or box left beside the toter waits another week. Toters sit two feet clear of obstructions and two feet apart with the arrows on the lids facing the street.

Internet Archive capture of the trash pickup guidelines with the toter rules, the bulk item and tree limb collection, the contractor exclusion, the annual 2,000 pound allowance and the toter material lists

Three trucks can come on one trash day

Trash rides the regular truck, bulk items such as furniture and appliances ride a secondary truck on the same day, and tree limbs, brush and leaves ride a separate organic truck so the material can be composted and mulched instead of landfilled. Separating the piles is what lets each collection finish in one pass.

Use the yearly recycling site allowance

Every district customer may haul and dump up to 2,000 pounds of household trash at East Central Recycling each year at no extra charge, along with six car tires, hazardous household waste and electronic goods. The same site accepts construction materials with a charge, and the district publishes the recycling number for questions about charges or programs.

Watch the leaf and Christmas windows

Leaves are collected at the curb during an annual leaf season that the district announces by website, social media and press release, and they must be bagged and secured and never put in blue recycling bags. The Christmas season collection runs from about December 20 to January 5, when extra securely fastened bags on the ground beside the toters are picked up on the regular trash day.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Muncie collects everything through the Sanitary District, and the district makes the curb do most of the work. Trash, recycling, bulk items, tree limbs and white goods are all weekly services, so a sofa, a refrigerator or a stack of limbs needs no appointment, only the right pile in the right place. Household waste goes bagged inside a district toter with the lid closed, bulk items and appliances sit at the curb for a secondary truck, and tree limbs, brush and leaves go in their own pile for a separate organic truck that keeps the material out of the landfill. Leaves add a bagged collection each fall, and the Christmas season brings a window in which extra bags on the ground are picked up with the regular route. What the curb will not take goes to East Central Recycling on East Centennial Avenue, where every district customer has an annual allowance covering 2,000 pounds of household trash along with six car tires, hazardous household waste and electronic goods, and where construction material is accepted with a charge. Household trash through the yearly allowance, six car tires per year, hazardous household waste, electronic goods, broken down cardboard in the roll off recycling dumpster, and construction materials with a charge.

The household hazardous waste program is free to Delaware County residents only when the waste was generated at the residence and is closed to commercial, industrial and agricultural businesses. Construction material is a paid category, and the district does not publish that charge, so a paid load has to be priced by phone first.

East Central Recycling is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the site closes to the public a half hour before those closing times, so call 765-282-1900 before a late trip.

The yearly allowance of 2,000 pounds of household trash, six car tires, hazardous household waste and electronic goods carries no extra charge, while construction material is accepted at a charge the district does not publish, so confirm the amount and the accepted material on 765-282-1900.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

Do bulky items need to be scheduled?

No. Bulk items such as furniture, tree limbs and appliances simply go to the curb, and a secondary truck collects them on the regular trash day. The district asks only that tree limbs, brush and leaves be separated from the other large items so the organic material can be handled on its own.Official guidance

Will the district take a mattress?

Confirm it first on 765-747-4865, because the district names furniture, tree limbs and appliances in its bulk collection and does not name bedding anywhere in the guidelines. If it is accepted the mattress goes out with the bulk items on the regular trash day.Official guidance

How are appliances collected?

As a weekly curbside service. The district lists white good appliance collection among the services every customer receives each week, and appliances also appear in the bulk item list that a secondary truck collects on the regular trash day, so the unit simply goes to the curb.Official guidance

Where do electronics go?

To East Central Recycling at 701 East Centennial Avenue, using the yearly allowance every district customer has for up to 2,000 pounds of household trash along with six car tires, hazardous household waste and electronic goods at no extra charge. Questions about the program go to 765-282-1900.Official guidance

Who collects the waste in Muncie?

The Muncie Sanitary District, which runs trash, recycling, bulk item, tree limb and white good collection as weekly curbside services for its customers, with the district office at 300 N. High Street and the sanitation department on 765-747-4865 for toters and service questions.Official guidance

How often is trash picked up?

Every day of the year except Christmas, according to the district's pickup schedule page, with each household on its own trash day. Bulk items, tree limbs and white goods ride the same trash day on separate trucks, and toters return to the property by 7 p.m. the same day.Official guidance

What happens if an item is not collected?

The district leaves a green missed trash sticker on the item explaining why it was not collected, which usually means it was not accessible, was not inside a toter or did not meet the guidelines. The district asks that the problem be fixed promptly so the item is collected the following week.Official guidance

What if the toter is damaged or missing?

Toters are district property that the customer is responsible for, and a toter damaged through no fault of the resident is repaired or replaced at no charge. Request a new toter, a replacement or a new lid through the sanitation department on 765-747-4865, and lease additional toters through the sewage utility office.Official guidance

Where does cardboard go?

Broken down cardboard boxes belong in the blue recycling toter, and they can also be dropped off directly at the East Central Recycling roll off recycling dumpster during regular business hours. Cardboard that is not broken down is not collected as part of the curbside service.Official guidance
