Appliance pickup in TopekaCity collection No local page publishes acceptance for a refrigerant unit. The county keeps the large item answer to mattresses, a couch or sofa, household furniture, yard waste bags and bundled limbs or carpet, and it routes metal items to a scheduled appointment. A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is both metal and a sealed refrigerant appliance, so it is a question for the department rather than an assumed acceptance. No refrigerant appliance rate is published. Call the Shawnee County Solid Waste Department at 785.233.4774 to confirm whether the unit is accepted and what the metal item pick-up costs. The ReStore on NE Gordon St lists appliances among its donations and states that it recycles scrap metal and broken appliances, so it is worth a second call on 785.783.7670, but neither page answers the refrigerant question.

The local disposal guide
Topeka does not run its own garbage trucks. Curbside refuse and recycling come from the Shawnee County Solid Waste Department, which bills a monthly service that covers weekly refuse collection, recycling every other week and one large item a week. The county names box springs and mattresses, a couch or sofa, and household furniture as the large items it takes with the regular refuse, and it adds an allowance of up to 15 bags of leaves, grass and bundled trimmings. Metal items sit outside that list: they are scheduled by phone with the department and carry a minimum charge. Electronics go to the department's Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 131 NE 46th St, which takes electronic waste without charge except for CRT televisions and monitors. Construction and demolition material, dirt, rock and concrete stay out of the refuse cart.

Appliances are not on the county large item list, which names mattresses, a couch or sofa, household furniture, yard waste bags and bundled limbs or carpet. The restrictions line puts metal items on a phone call and a scheduled appointment with a minimum charge, and a washer, dryer, stove or water heater is a metal item, so it is an arrangement rather than an automatic curbside pickup.

Electronic waste goes to the county Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 131 NE 46th St, which accepts all electronic waste for recycling. The facility charges nothing for e-waste except a CRT television or monitor, which carries a published fee whatever its size.
Construction and demolition material is written out of the household refuse cart, alongside dirt, rock and concrete. The county says the cart is for household waste and offers pick-up of non household refuse only on a limited basis, with a fee for material that is not considered household refuse.
Exercise equipment is not named in the county large item answer, and the ReStore states plainly that it does not accept exercise equipment. A treadmill or a weight machine is therefore a confirmation rather than a routine pickup, even though the machine is usually metal.
Yard waste travels with the same weekly service. The county allows up to 15 bags of leaves or grass on non holiday weeks, and it also takes bundled tree limbs or carpet no longer than four feet and 18 inches in diameter.

The handoff matters
The county asks for refuse and recycling at the collection point before 7:00 AM on the service day, and the one allowed large item goes out beside the cart on the same morning. Refuse is collected every week and recycling every other week, on the red or blue week the address lookup resolves. Trucks photograph addresses without carts and do not return before the next scheduled day.

Yes. A couch or sofa is named in the county large item answer, and that pickup runs with the regular refuse day. One large item is accepted a week on non holiday weeks, and a sofa sleeper counts only after the metal springs are removed, with the springs then scheduled separately by phone. Metal items as a group are handled by appointment rather than going out automatically.Official guidance
Yes. Box springs and mattresses are named first on the county large item answer, and the pickup rides with the monthly refuse service that already covers weekly collection. Put the item out with the refuse before 7 am on the regular refuse day, one large item a week, and skip holiday weeks, when bulky items are suspended. The ReStore does not accept mattresses or box springs.Official guidance
Call the Shawnee County Solid Waste Department at 785.233.4774. Appliances are metal items, and the county schedules metal items by phone with a minimum charge rather than taking them as the free weekly large item. A working appliance can also be donated to the ReStore on NE Gordon St, which takes drop-offs Tuesday through Saturday and offers free pickup by appointment.Official guidance
No local page publishes a route for them, so call the Shawnee County Solid Waste Department at 785.233.4774 first. The published large item answer names mattresses, a couch or sofa, household furniture and bundled limbs rather than appliances, and metal items go on a scheduled appointment with a minimum charge. The ReStore on NE Gordon St accepts appliances and recycles scrap metal and broken ones, so it is the other number to try.Official guidance
To the Shawnee County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 131 NE 46th St, which accepts all electronic waste for recycling. E-waste is free there except a CRT television or monitor, which carries a published fee whatever its size. The facility opens Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 5 pm, Friday from 7 am to 3 pm and the first Saturday of the month from 9 am to noon except January and July.Official guidance
One. The county allows one bulky item a week with the regular refuse, with no separate charge for households on the county refuse service, and the item goes out before 7 am on the regular refuse day. Bulky items and extra bags are suspended during holiday weeks, and metal items are scheduled by phone instead of going out automatically.Official guidance
The Shawnee County Solid Waste Department. The department serves the county whose seat is Topeka, supplies the carts, bills the monthly refuse service and runs the weekly large item pickup. The office is at 1515 NW Saline St, Suite 225 in Topeka and the number is 785.233.4774. The City of Topeka programs page routes trash and recycling questions to the same county department.Official guidance
No. The county states that bulky items and yard waste are not picked up during holiday weeks, and the new customer packet adds that extra bags are suspended as well. Those weeks also move the collection day for the households on the affected route, so the holiday schedule the department publishes is what settles the day for that week.Official guidance
Metal items. The county says metal items are picked up by calling the office at 785.233.4774 to schedule and that the service carries a minimum charge, which sits apart from the free weekly large item covering mattresses, a couch or sofa, household furniture, yard waste bags and bundled limbs or carpet. A washer, dryer, stove, water heater or treadmill is a metal item for this purpose, and so is a refrigerator or air conditioner.Official guidance
