A box spring and a mattress are the first items named on the county large item answer, so a bed set goes out with the regular refuse rather than into the recycling cart. One large item is accepted a week on non holiday weeks.

When & how
Set the mattress out with the refuse before 7 am on the regular refuse day. The day stays the same every week apart from the holiday weeks, when bulky items and extra bags are suspended.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the blue lid recycling cart, which takes plastics 1, 2 and 5, metal and paper and is not emptied when it holds anything else. One large item a week is the limit, so a mattress and a box spring in the same week is a question for the office at 785.233.4774.
Refuse, recycling and the large item are all out by 7 am
The county asks for refuse and recycling at the collection point before 7:00 AM on the service day, and the one allowed large item goes out beside the cart on the same morning. Refuse is collected every week and recycling every other week, on the red or blue week the address lookup resolves. Trucks photograph addresses without carts and do not return before the next scheduled day.
The recycling cart goes to the curb or alley facing the street with at least three feet of clearance on all sides so the collection arm can reach it. Anything left outside the cart is handled as trash, bagged items are not accepted in the recycling cart, and a cart holding anything other than the accepted plastics 1, 2 and 5, metal and paper is not emptied.
No liquids go in the refuse cart. Used needles and sharps go into an empty hard plastic container with a tight fitting lid, such as a laundry detergent or bleach bottle rather than a milk jug or a red biohazard container, with the lid taped and the contents written on the outside. Containers filled with sharps, and any hazardous material, belong at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on NE 46th St.
Branches, shrubs, boards and carpet go out cut and tied in bundles no longer than four feet and 18 inches in diameter, and bagged waste stays under 45 pounds a bag. A personal container has to hold no more than 32 gallons, have handles, and weigh no more than 65 pounds, and the county supplies carts for households that do not want to use their own.

The county says metal items are picked up by calling the office at 785.233.4774 to schedule and that the service carries a minimum charge, which sits apart from the free weekly large item covering mattresses, a couch or sofa, household furniture, yard waste bags and bundled limbs or carpet.
