Appliances are on the oversized item list, so washers, dryers, stoves and the rest go out beside the containers with the weekly collection, and the Recycling Center takes appliances as well. Two conditions decide whether a unit is actually collected: a refrigerator or freezer has to be empty with the doors removed, and an air conditioner or dehumidifier has to have its freon removed by a licensed recovery or heating and cooling company with a sticker attached to prove it.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the weekly curbside service with no separate appliance fee, provided a refrigerator or freezer is empty with the doors off and an air conditioner or dehumidifier carries the licensed freon removal sticker; the Recycling Center also accepts appliances free to residents.
When & how
Set the appliance beside the rubbish containers on your regular collection day and arrange the freon work before then if the unit is an air conditioner or dehumidifier.
Get it ready
Empty the unit completely, remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer, keep the unit upright, and attach the licensed refrigerant recovery sticker to an air conditioner or dehumidifier so the crew can see the freon work has been done.
Refuse and compost go to the grass at the curb by 6 a.m. or no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before the scheduled collection, and until then the carts and bags stay at the side of the house or in the rear yard. The carts have to be three feet apart with the lids closed and nothing protruding from the top, and a compost pile is placed five feet from the rest of the garbage. When a holiday falls in the week, collection runs a day late for the rest of that week.
Furniture and mattresses are set neatly beside the rubbish containers rather than inside them, and a mattress with bed bugs has to be wrapped and contained in plastic first. Carpets and padding are cut, rolled and tied securely in four foot lengths. A refrigerator or freezer is emptied and its doors removed, with the freon left in place. An air conditioner or dehumidifier is different: the freon has to be removed by a licensed refrigerant recovery or heating and cooling company and a sticker proving the work has to be attached to the appliance before the crew can collect it.
The yard is for bona fide Warren residents only, with proof of residency such as a driver's licence, and it expects a personal vehicle: commercial type vehicles and panel vans are turned away and contractors are not eligible to use the facility for any material.
