The local disposal guide
Columbia collects household trash weekly in a city-provided roll cart and recycling weekly on the same collection day, with carts out no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before and no later than 6:30 a.m. on the collection day and back in by 10 p.m. Only regular household trash and yard waste go in the roll cart, mixed containers go in a blue recycling bag, fibers are bundled separately, and glass is a contaminant that the city says belongs in the trash rather than the recycling stream. Bulky items and major appliances are arranged through the CoMo Recycle and Trash app or at 573.874.2489, with one bulky item collected free each year and published charges after that, and appliances picked up on the regular trash day. Household hazardous waste is free at the city facility on the first and third Saturdays from April through November, where tires and large electronics are refused, and residential yard waste can go in the roll cart or to the Parkside Drive and Capen Park drop-off centers.

The handoff matters
All refuse goes in the city-provided roll cart with the lid closed, an overflowing cart is not emptied, bags left on the curb are not picked up, and only regular household trash and yard waste belong in the cart. Carts go to the curb no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before the collection day and no later than 6:30 a.m. on the collection day, and they come back in no later than 10 p.m. that day. The carts are city property assigned to the address and carry barcodes.
