At a county full-service center one large bulky item such as a sofa, a chair or a table is no charge for a county resident with a blue sticker in a non-commercial vehicle. A load with more than one bulky item, or one past two 96-gallon cans and under three cubic yards, is charged at the published bulky waste rate per unit, and a weighed load is charged per ton with a load minimum. A private hauler sets its own price. Confirm which category your load falls into at the fee booth.
When & how
North Mecklenburg Disposal and Recycling Center, 12300 N. Statesville Road, Huntersville, Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Business and non-residential loads and dump trailers are not allowed at that site on Saturdays, so a Saturday trip in a commercial vehicle needs one of the other centers.
Get it ready
Break the piece down where it comes apart and keep cushions, drawers and hardware with it so the load reads as one item. Metal bed frames, shelving and grills are accepted as scrap metal at the same centers, so separate the metal if you want it counted that way. Bring furniture already separated from renovation debris, because a mixed load is charged at the construction rate.
Mecklenburg County residents display a free blue entry sticker at the full-service centers and show proof of residence such as a driver's license. Without a sticker the load is charged at the out of county category, and a non-county resident can buy an annual sticker. Payment is by debit card or a major credit card except American Express, and the centers take no cash and no checks.

Loads must arrive separated by material, and a mixed load is not accepted or is charged at the construction rate. Delivery is capped at fourteen cubic yards, mattresses and box springs are limited to one each, computer equipment is limited to two items, tires are limited to five, and residential households are limited to two televisions per visit per month. What can go out with yard waste?+
Yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as garbage, in bags of 50 pounds or less, with up to 20 bags of leaves a week. Limbs must be no larger than five inches in diameter and no longer than four feet and stacked in piles no bigger than four by four by four feet with two feet between piles.
