The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Dayton picks up waste from city containers once a week and recycling every other week, and the Division of Waste Collection adds a bulk pickup one Friday a month for anything too big for the container. Bulk has to be scheduled ahead of time through the call centre at 937-333-4800 or Dayton Delivers, and the load is limited to five large items or up to twenty five small bags or boxes. Furniture, metal appliances, refrigerators, stoves, carpet and mattresses are named on the bulk list, and a mattress has to be wrapped before it goes out. Everything is at the curb or the alley line by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled day, bulk and metal stay in separate piles because a different truck takes the metal, and furniture is left assembled. The city refuses construction and excavating material, hazardous or flammable products, automotive parts, air conditioners, hot tubs, spas and pool tables, and for those it points residents to a private hauler or to the Montgomery County Solid Waste District, whose transfer station in Moraine takes electronics for free, household hazardous waste on Tuesdays, ten scrap tires a year and large appliances during its amnesty weekends.

Mattress and box spring

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses and box springs are named on the city bulk list, and a mattress has to be wrapped before it goes to the curb on the scheduled bulk day.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no charge for a scheduled bulk pickup, so call the waste collection call centre at 937-333-4800 or open a request in Dayton Delivers to book the pickup and confirm the current terms.
When & how
Bulk pickup runs one Friday a month and must be scheduled in advance, and the collection day for an address shifted by one day in any week that contains a holiday.
Get it ready
Wrap the mattress or box spring, keep it inside the five large item limit, and put it out by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled day in front of the home when the regular collection is at the curb or at the alley line when the collection runs in the alley. Leave furniture assembled and keep the bedding clear of cars, mailboxes and trees.

Couch, sofa and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named on the city bulk list and goes out on the scheduled monthly bulk day, left assembled, inside the five large item limit.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no bulk pickup charge, so call 937-333-4800 or use Dayton Delivers to schedule the pickup and confirm the terms that apply.
When & how
One Friday a month by appointment, with the address collection day moving back one day in a holiday week.
Get it ready
Leave the piece assembled, put it out by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled day in front of the home or at the alley line depending on where the regular collection runs, and keep it five feet from cars, mailboxes and trees with three feet between containers and the pile.

Refrigerator, stove and metal appliances

Accepted with preparation

Metal appliances, refrigerators and stoves are named on the city bulk list, air conditioners and HVAC parts are refused, and the county takes large appliances free twice a year.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no charge for a scheduled bulk pickup, and the county appliance route mixes free and paid days, because appliances are free only during the twice yearly amnesty weekend and pay the normal disposal fee on other days, so confirm the terms at 937-333-4800 for the city and 937-225-4999 for the county before the unit moves.
When & how
The city takes the appliance on the scheduled monthly bulk Friday, and the county appliance amnesty weekend is published for Thursday Oct. 1 and Friday Oct. 2 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with confirmation available at the same number.
Get it ready
Keep metal appliances in a separate pile from the rest of the bulk load, because a different truck collects the metal, and put the appliance out by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled day. Do not mix an air conditioner, HVAC part, hot tub, spa, piano or pool table into the pile, because the city refuses all of those and expects a private hauler instead.

Television, monitor and computer

Accepted with preparation

The city routes electronics to the Montgomery County Solid Waste District, where recycling is free to county residents at the transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free electronics recycling at the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Station for Montgomery County residents, with the accepted list covering computers, monitors, televisions, VCRs, DVD and CD players, speakers, fax machines, telephones and cell phones, microwaves, copiers, small countertop appliances, and cords, cables and holiday string lights.
When & how
The county publishes the transfer station location and hours with the solid waste department, and the city's own guidelines page sends residents there rather than collecting electronics on the curbside routes.
Get it ready
Wipe or remove the drive before recycling a computer or television, take the cords and cables with the device, and keep large appliances such as refrigerators and freezers out of the electronics load because the county refuses them there. Hazardous materials, chemicals, CDs, VHS tapes and styrofoam packing are refused as well.

Treadmill, exercise bike and weight bench

Special rules apply

An exercise machine is not named on the city bulk list or on the refused list, so it needs a confirmation call before the monthly bulk day.

City cost & eligibility
Exercise equipment is not named on the published bulk or refused lists, so call 937-333-4800 or open a Dayton Delivers request with the machine and its size before the bulk pickup is scheduled.
When & how
If the city accepts the piece it rides the scheduled monthly bulk Friday, counted inside the five large item limit.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it will come apart, tie the cord and loose parts to the frame so nothing trails into the street, and set it out by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled day clear of cars, mailboxes, trees and containers. Remove a battery pack before the frame goes out.

Passenger tires

Accepted with preparation

Dayton lists tire collection as a pre-scheduled city service, and the county takes ten passenger tires a year free from each county resident.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Ten passenger or pick-up tires a year are free to each Montgomery County resident with proof of residency at the transfer and recycling facility, on or off the rim, while tires beyond the ten and any non-residential load are charged the current disposal rate.
When & how
The city collects tires as a pre-scheduled service, and a resident can add tires to an already scheduled bulk pickup by calling 937-333-4800 before 2 p.m. The county takes tires at the transfer and recycling facility, and its 2026 buy-back event was published for Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get it ready
Separate tires from the rest of the load, keep the count inside the limits, and leave truck, farm implement and other oversized tires out entirely, since the county refuses them and asks residents to call 937-225-4999 about them. Hauling more than ten scrap tires without an approved state registration is a felony in Ohio.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Dayton refuses excavating and building materials in the bulk program and tells residents to call a private hauler for them.

City cost & eligibility
There is no city collection for construction debris. The refused list names concrete, rocks, brick blocks, sand, gravel, drywall, wood and plaster, and the city directs the load to a private hauler instead of a curbside pickup.
When & how
No city collection date exists for this material, so arrange a private hauler or container before the work starts rather than adding debris to a bulk pile.
Get it ready
Keep concrete, rocks, brick, block, sand, gravel, drywall, wood and plaster out of the bulk pile and out of the waste containers, and keep the pile clear of vehicles, mailboxes, trees and containers while it waits for the hauler.

Bulky household junk

Accepted with preparation

Dayton runs a bulk pickup one Friday a month by appointment, limited to five large items or up to twenty five small bags or boxes.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no charge for a scheduled bulk pickup, so call 937-333-4800 or open a Dayton Delivers request to book the pick and confirm the terms for the load.
When & how
One Friday a month, scheduled in advance, with the address collection day moving back one day in any week containing a holiday.
Get it ready
Put the load out by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled day in front of the home or at the alley line depending on where the regular collection runs, keep bulk and metal in separate piles, roll carpet into a bundle four feet long and two feet in diameter tied with rope, leave furniture assembled, and bag, bundle or contain anything loose. Tie yard waste into bundles of four feet or less and eighteen inches or less in diameter weighing no more than twenty five pounds, or use the free green debris drop-off at 2670 Wagner Ford Road, and tape broken glass and clean up any glass residue.

Bagged household trash

Special rules apply

Household trash goes in the city rollout container with the lid closed, bagged rather than loose, and out by 6:30 a.m. on the collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A residence in the city limits served by the Division of Waste Collection, which provides the container and the weekly collection as part of the city waste service. Recycling is free to a Dayton waste collection customer, with a free 32 or 96 gallon bin ordered through Dayton Delivers or by calling 937-333-4800.
When & how
Waste is collected once a week from the city container and recycling every other week, and trash and recycling are not collected on a holiday, with the collection moving back one day after the holiday.
Get it ready
Bag or wrap all trash rather than putting it in loose, close the lid on the rollout, keep hot items such as fireplace ashes out, and set the container out by 6:30 a.m. with the handles facing the house, at least five feet from any object such as a car, mailbox or tree and three feet from other containers. Bring the container in from the curb line, alley or front yard by 8 a.m. the day after collection.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Special rules apply

Hazardous, flammable and explosive material never goes in a city container or bulk pile, and the county collects household hazardous waste free on Tuesdays in Moraine.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free household hazardous waste disposal for Montgomery County residents with proof of residency at the Montgomery County Transfer and Recycling Facility, 1001 Encrete Lane in Moraine, and material from commercial customers or businesses is refused.
When & how
Household hazardous waste runs 1 to 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month from November through February and every Tuesday from March through October, under the green recycling canopy, and the gates close promptly at the posted time.
Get it ready
Keep material in the original container, do not mix different materials together, seal and label each container, keep flammables away from corrosives, and carry the load in the trunk so odours and spills stay out of the passenger area. Batteries of all types, paints, cleaners, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, propane tanks, fluorescent lights and vehicle fluids are accepted, while asbestos, explosives, pharmaceuticals and medical waste, radioactive material, cylinders other than propane and anything over twenty five pounds or fifteen gallons are refused.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Dayton keeps most of the work at the curb: a household schedules the monthly bulk pickup through 937-333-4800 or Dayton Delivers, wraps the mattress, keeps metal in its own pile and puts everything out by 6:30 a.m. Tires and metal can be added to an already scheduled pickup with a call before 2 p.m. The county layer covers what the city refuses or routes elsewhere. The Montgomery County Transfer and Recycling Facility at 1001 Encrete Lane in Moraine is free to county residents with proof of residency for electronics, for household hazardous waste on Tuesdays from 1 to 7 p.m., and for ten scrap passenger or pick-up tires a year, and it takes large appliances free during its twice yearly amnesty weekend with free Freon removal for up to five appliances a year. A bin holding non-recyclable material is left behind and the load is treated as trash.Official guidance
