Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Forest Grove residents with a current Waste Management account pay nothing for the same piece at the city cleanup drop off, which takes three single items.
When & how
The city cleanup runs twice a year, with the next extra curbside collection Monday, November 2 through Friday, November 6 and the bulky drop off on Saturday, November 7 from 9 am to 2 pm. Metro Central is open to the public every day from 8 am to 5 pm apart from the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
Get it ready
At the city drop off, bring the utility bill as proof of residency and keep construction, remodeling or demolition material out of the load, because those are refused and a mixed load is charged on a fee schedule instead. At a Metro station, sort anything recyclable out first, cover the load to avoid the uncovered load charge, and expect the piece to be weighed with the rest of the garbage.

Bye Bye Mattress collection sites take mattresses and box springs in any condition at no charge, Metro takes up to four per customer per day at no charge at its transfer stations, and the city cleanup counts a mattress as one of the three single items that come off free at the drop off.

Bye Bye Mattress sites accept mattresses and box springs in any condition free of charge, and residential customers get up to four mattresses or box springs per day free at Metro Central and Metro South. A Bye Bye Mattress site takes a mattress whenever it is open, the Metro stations take them every day they are open, and the city drop off takes them on its cleanup Saturday, which falls on November 7 this cycle from 9 am to 2 pm.

A cooling unit is a chargeable appliance at Metro rather than a free one. Metro Central and Metro South take air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators and dehumidifiers for a per unit charge with a limit of five per person per day, and the city cleanup drop off takes the same kind of unit only after the refrigerant has been removed.

$30 per appliance built to contain coolant, including air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators and dehumidifiers, at a Metro transfer station. Residential customers at Metro Central or Metro South, limited to five coolant appliances per person per day. Oregon E-Cycles lets anyone bring seven or fewer computers, monitors, televisions and printers at a time to a participating collection site for free recycling, with peripherals such as keyboards and mice also free, and the city says e-waste is accepted for recycling at all times.

Oregon E-Cycles is a statewide program that takes seven or fewer computers including desktops, laptops and tablets, monitors, televisions and printers at a time for free at participating collection sites, and computer peripherals such as keyboards and mice are free as well. Other types of electronics are not part of the program.
When & how
Collection sites keep their own hours and the current list is available from the program's site finder or on 888-769-0149. The city also states that televisions, computers and monitors are accepted at all times for recycling, so a device does not have to wait for the twice yearly cleanup.
Get it ready
Count the devices before the trip, because the free allowance is seven or fewer of the covered types at one time. Wipe personal data off a computer or drive before handover, keep the device out of the garbage and recycling carts, and remember that the program excludes electronics outside the covered list, such as small appliances and peripherals that are not keyboards or mice.

The city cleanup drop off refuses all construction, remodeling and demolition material and charges a mixed load on a fee schedule, and a Metro transfer station takes it as non-hazardous solid waste by weight, with separated clean wood getting a lower rate than mixed debris.

From $51 for minimum charge for a load of non-hazardous solid waste such as construction debris at a Metro transfer station, which covers loads up to 240 pounds, with separated clean wood charged at its own lower rate. There is no collection day for a machine. A hauler pickup runs on that hauler's schedule and a Metro load goes during transfer station hours.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it comes apart, keep the loose weights with it, and drain anything powered by fluid. Keep it out of the weekly cart and out of the recycling, and remember that metal parts are often recyclable while the rest of the machine is garbage weight.

Seven or fewer devices is the free electronics limit

No charge. Mattresses and box springs in any condition and no matter when they were purchased are accepted free at participating Oregon collection sites and events under the Mattress Recycling Council program.

The program asks households to confirm both the item list and the site's hours, because locations and events change, and a mattress that Metro would treat as garbage rather than a mattress, such as a futon, crib mattress, waterbed or air mattress, is outside what the program takes.

Non-hazardous solid waste including home garbage, broken furniture and clean and engineered wood, separated clean wood, sorted yard debris, compost, boats and campers under the published conditions, Christmas trees, coolant appliances such as air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators and dehumidifiers, tires from passenger vehicles and motorcycles, and railroad ties shorter than four feet, plus recyclables, metal dishwashers, microwaves, water heaters, stoves, ovens, clothes washers and dryers, and up to four mattresses or box springs per customer per day at no charge.

The station cannot accept vehicles or auto bodies, asbestos-containing material, burned materials or wildfire ash, flat or built-up roofing, loads of liquids, petroleum contaminated soil, radioactive metals or electric vehicle batteries, and customers are responsible for anything they leave behind. Coolant appliances are limited to five per person per day, tires to fifteen per customer per day, and public customers using the staffed scales pay a 30 dollar transaction fee per load.
